Also announced during the Disney Investor's Day presentation is a new TV series entitled The Acolyte from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.

“The Acolyte” is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.

Details are limited at this point, with fans only knowing that the series will be a "martial-arts thriller" centered around a female protagonist.

‘Star Wars’ Disney Plus Series ‘The Acolyte’ Eyes Amandla Stenberg for Lead Role

Amandla Stenberg is in talks to join the upcoming Disney Plus series “The Acolyte,” the live-action “Star Wars” series that hails from Leslye Headland.

Details on the character Stenberg would play are being kept under tight wraps, but an acolyte in the “Star Wars” universe has typically referred to a Sith who has just begun their training under an experienced Sith Lord. This, of course, was prior to Sith Lord Darth Bane instituting the Rule of Two, under which there are only ever two Sith in existence at a time — one master and one apprentice.

Reps for Stenberg and Lucasfilm did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Jodie Turner-Smith Poised To Join Disney+’s ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte'

Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim, Anne Boleyn) is finalizing a deal to join Amandla Stenberg in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte. Reps for Lucasfilm and Turner-Smith declined comment.

So far Stenberg, who is playing the lead, is the only confirmed cast member for the Star Wars universe project from Leslye Headland. Details about characters, including the one played by Turner-Smith, are being kept under wraps.

The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era, Disney+ said in its December 2020 announcement. In the Star Wars universe, an acolyte can refer to individuals with force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord.

The series is expected to begin production in London in late fall.

‘Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae Lands Male Lead In ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ From Leslye Headland And Lucasfilm

The eve of his potential historic night at the Emmys, Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae looks to have found his first major studio role following that breakout in a property more popular then the Netflix global phenomenon.

Sources tell Deadline that Lee has landed the male lead in the new Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte from Lucasfilm. Amandla Steinberg is set for the other lead role, with Deadline also recently breaking the news that Jodie Turner-Smith also is joining cast. Leslye Headland tapped as the series director, writer, exec producer and showrunner.

Details about Lee’s character are being kept under wraps. Lucasfilm could not be reached for comment on the casting.

The “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” at Disney+ has added Manny Jacinto to its cast.

Jacinto joins previously announced series lead Amandla Stenberg in the series as well as cast members Jodie Turner-Smith and Lee Jung-jae. According to sources, Stenberg, Jacinto, and Lee will be the three main characters in the series.

Charlie Barnett is going from time loops to lightsabers.

The actor, best known for starring opposite Natasha Lyonne in buzzy Netflix series Russian Doll, is in final negotiations to join the cast of the latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte.

If the deal makes, Barnett will be reunited with the co-creator of Russian Doll, Leslye Headland, who is showrunning, writing and directing the Star Wars series.

Character details for Barnett were not revealed, but sources say the role is supporting in nature.

Disney+ announced the cast for The Acolyte, an upcoming Star Wars Original series from Lucasfilm. Joining the previously announced Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) are Emmy Award-winner Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Manny Jacinto (Nine Perfect Strangers), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix).

The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

The High Republic saw the Jedi Order at its prime, centuries prior to the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

The Acolyte Series Adds Star Wars Alum to Play a Wookiee Jedi

During Star Wars Celebration in London, Lucasfilm confirmed that Joonas Suotamo will be returning to the Star Wars universe to portray a new character in Disney+’s upcoming series The Acolyte. Suotamo, who first starred as Chewbacca in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and in Solo: A Star Wars Story, has been tapped to play a Wookiee Jedi named Kel Naka.

Star Wars: The Acolyte Finds Its Live-Action Vernestra Rwoh

During this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, more about the mysterious Disney+ series The Acolyte came to light, including the fact that Rebecca Henderson will star in the series as a fan-favorite character.

During Saturday’s festivities, it was announced that Henderson would be playing the character of Vernestra Rwoh in the upcoming series. For those unaware, Rwoh first appeared in Charles Soule’s novel Light of the Jedi. She’s a female Mirialan Jedi who passed her trials at the age of 15. As one of the toughest Jedis in recent times, she plays a big role in many of Star Wars‘ The High Republic era of storytelling.

According to Collider, Lucasfilm is currently eyeing a summer 2024 release date for its upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte, which takes place more than 100 years before the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Production on the Amandla Stenberg-led epic sci-fi drama officially wrapped last June prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Started the series. Can't judge it yet based on one episode. I don't think I particularly like the first 5 minutes twist, but I do understand why they decided to do it. The influence of wuxia in the opening fight scene is interesting though.
