How Do I Connect Active Speakers To Onkyo Receiver?
« on: Mar 05, 2021 at 04:09 PM »
I have these left and right powered speakers and the subwoofer that goes with them. How do I connect these to an old Onkyo Receiver (TX-SR313)? Is it even possible?

The speakers and subwoofer only have XLR and 1/4" jack ports.

You cant. That Onkyo model does not have any pre-outs aside from the sub out.  You need to get a model that has a full set of 5.1 or 7.1 pre-outs then purchase an RCA to XLR adaptor just like this:

Pioneer Elite/Dynaudio/REL 7.1 THX
Pioneer DDJ SR2/Pioneer DM60/Mac Air M1
Sonos/NHT 2,1 sub sat

I seem to remember a high level to line level converter being made by Markcrenz.
You can look for and use something like that.

If I connect both left and right speakers into the subwoofer, and then from the subwoofer into my receiver's PRE OUT using that RCA to XLR cable you mentioned, won't that work?

Connect the subwoofer to the Subout of the AVR.  You would need RCA to XLR cable.
If the satellites is passive and gets its power from the sub
Connect the Left and right speakers directly to the AVR speaker output.  You would need 1/4 jacks  connected to regular speaker wire for this.
Check the specs of the speakers to properly determine crossover frequency to use

If the satellites are active, meaning , it has it own amp, you would need speaker level to Line level   converter

your equipment manual should give you all information you need, does your 2.1 need line level input? we can assume it is full range input signal, so then it is just a matter of finding the correct interconnects....

there is one audio output port that you can try....the VCR/DVR out.....

best to ask GENELEC about your problem, they should be able to give you product support, when you contact them, give them the exact model number and serial number of your equipment...

Genelec 1091A and 1029A install manual:

https://assets.ctfassets.net/4zjnzn055a4v/61meaH6IX6Wysu8SGiuUSe/75204b3e960668da97186c17a2ef0228/1091A_opman.pdf

Connection path would be:  Source ----> Genelec satellites -----> Genelec Sub (phono or XLR).  That being said you only need a volume controlled, stereo, low level output from any source.
Pioneer Elite/Dynaudio/REL 7.1 THX
Pioneer DDJ SR2/Pioneer DM60/Mac Air M1
Sonos/NHT 2,1 sub sat

Looks like the simplest way is via the headphone jack...

I would like to push my luck even further and ask if it is possible to use my surround (passive) and center (passive) speakers together with this 2.1 genelec setup to make a 5.1 system?

Once you use the headphone jack of the Onkyo, the internal power amps will be muted so no...5.1 aint possible.
