During the offseason many people wondered why All Star Jonas Valenciunas was traded for Steven Adams.  What the Grizzlies did was a perfect example of re-orienting the offense effectively towards Ja Morant and let him run the show.  Steven Adams rarely shoots. They have zero plays for him. All his points come from offensive rebound put backs and tip ins. He just sets mean and solid picks for Morant, Bane and the others.  In contrast, Valenciunas demanded the ball a lot.

Their record last year was 38 Wins and 34 losses.  This year they already amassed 34 Wins while losing only 17 times.  They haven't even reached the All Star Game (Halfway point),

Last season's field goal attempts per game for MEM:

Valenciunas: 12 FGA  (17.1 ppg)
Morant: 15.2 FGA  (19.1 ppg)
Brooks : 15.4  (17.2 ppg)
Jackson: 11.4  (14.4 ppg)
Bane: 7.3  (9.2 ppg)

This year:

Adams: 4.8  (6.5 ppg)
Morant: 19.7 (25.9 ppg)
Brooks: 16.2  (18.4 ppg)
Jackson: 13.6  (16.5 ppg)
Bane: 14.3  (17.7 ppg)

Sometimes all you need is to look at your roster and instead of adding talent...you subtract talent and give opportunities for the others to shine.

the other thing about the improvement for Memphis is the players improvement as they mature in the league ... all those 4 you mentioned outside of the centers are probably just 2-3 years in the NBA

True. They have to exercise effective salary cap management if they want to re-sign the core unit of their team long term.

^^ Agree. While Ja Morant is living up to his potential, the Grizzlies are also benefiting from a fully healthy Jaren Jackson, Jr., who was out most of last season. JJJ has a good shot of being named an All-Star next week. Desmond Bane has also surprised a lot of experts. He’s now one of the favorites to win Most Improved Player and deservedly so.
We deserve better.

And even with Ja Morant out for a while earlier season they continued to win games. Hard working bench players are plug and play. It goes to show that they are all buying into the system. Great coaching staff!

And Ja Morant... Is just Wow... Memphis is lucky to have Ja, JJJ and this whole team.

Two good games right now. TOR-MIA now in double OT, while the BKN-GSW game is also going down the wire.

Btw, Westbrook played very well yesterday vs the Hornets. Unfortunately, he didn't sink the Game winning basket.

Triple OT na ‘yung TOR-MIA. Gabe Vincent hit a triple for the win sana, but MIA called timeout before he shot it  :P

Galing talaga ni Kyrie. Sana ma vaccine na siya. Nets just coasting sa season, basta ma healthy lang yun big 3 plus harris sa playoffs. They will smoke everybody. They don't even need the home court, mas advantage pa nga because kyrie only plays road games.

It is unfortunate palagi meron injuries sila or yun problem kay kyrie.

This game showed how good the Nets can be if they have their 3 stars playing.  The Warriors evaded the bullet thanks to the splash brothers finally hitting their stride in the 4th.

I was one of those who didn't get why they traded away Valanciunas.  But it's clear now how that move was key to the improvement of the Grizzlies.  Great vision by the coaching staff and front office.

The Grizzlies, like the Warriors, are a deep team.

They have solid players like Clarke, Jones, Anderson, Melton, even Konchar (!) to back up the main men (Ja, Brooks, Bane, and Jackson).

The Warriors are even deeper with Poole, Porter, Bjelica, Toscano Anderson, Kuminga, and even Gary Peyton Jr. to backup the core of Steph, Klay, Green, and Wiggins.

The big 3 will just wear everybody down. One can sit and the other 2 playing. Mill is a huge pickup. They are just giving their bigs playing experience for the playoffs. They might have some problems with bigger teams with good guards like bucks, sixers and phoenix. The others tingin ko kayang kaya.

Same here. I was wondering why they gave up an All Star caliber player in exchange for Adams who isn't an offensive force but rebounds and sets bone jarring picks and screens very well.  Turns out that those skillsets are all what they needed from the Center position.

lets keep this in mind...Draymond Green hasn't played yet this season with Klay and Steph.  He went down with an injury on the same night when Klay returned.  We haven't seen yet the championship core of the team playing together this year.

Oh...Draymond signed a contract with TNT Sports during his downtime. He will join Ernie, Shaq, Kenny and Chuck when his schedule allows him.  Possibly transitioning to his second career when his playing days are done.

I just learned about this story on Aaron Banes recently, even my friends in Australia did not know it until I shared the article to them -

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33153946/the-mysterious-fall-harrowing-story-nba-center

He had a terrible injury during the Olympics.  It was only reported during the game that he slipped at the locker room and got injured. I thought that it was nothing serious

35 years old, ACL injury and on the final year of his contract.  Mapapaisip na yan to rehab at his age. Well he already earned close to 65M in his NBA career.  Hopefully he invested most of it so that he can have the option to retire comfortably.

Participants for the 2022 Rising Stars tournament for All-Star weekend have also been revealed:

New format this season for the Rising Stars event. The 28 participants will be part of a draft pool from which four teams consisting of seven players each will be formed to play in a mini-tournament similar to the NCAA Final Four. It will be a “Race to 75” points - to commemorate the NBA’s 75th anniversary - to determine the winner of the tournament: the knockout games will be a race to a target score of 50 points each, while the final game will be a race to 25 points.

I'd love to see Ja Morant, Anthony Edwards, and ya Gary Peyton 2 in the dunk contest.  Also bring back Derrick Jones.

So far which rookie is impressing you most?

I like Chris Duarte of the Pacers - he plays like a veteran.  But Evan Mobley will most probably take ROTY.
