‘Cowboy Bebop’: John Cho, Mustafa Shakir Among Four Cast in Netflix Live-Action Series

The “Cowboy Bebop” live-action series at Netflix has found the lion’s share of its main cast, Variety has learned.

John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, and Alex Hassell have all been cast in lead roles in the series, which is based on the anime series of the same name.

Cho will star as Spike Spiegel, described as an impossibly cool bounty hunter with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare. He travels the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, pursuing the future’s most dangerous bounties with a combination of charm, charisma — and deadly Jeet Kune Do.

Shakir will play Jet Black, one of the few honest cops in the solar system before an ultimate betrayal robbed him of all that he loved, forcing him into a vagabond life of hunting bounties to put food on the table. Jet is an inveterate jazz enthusiast and Captain of the Bebop.

Pineda will play Faye Valentine, described as a bold, brash and unpredictable bounty hunter. Suffering from amnesia after years of being cryogenically frozen, Faye does whatever it takes to survive. Whether she’s lying, stealing, or just being a thorn in Spike and Jet’s side.

Hassell will play Vicious. Described as a man who thoroughly enjoys a good kill, Vicious is the Syndicate’s most notorious hitman. He’s also Spike Spiegel’s ex-partner and arch-enemy.

Radical Ed will also appear in the series, but the casting process for that character is ongoing.

Netflix picked up “Cowboy Bebop” for 10 episodes back in November. The series is described as the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed, a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world for the right price.

Shinichiro Watanabe, director of the original anime, will serve as a consultant on the project.

Netflix's Live-Action 'Cowboy Bebop' Adds 'The Gifted' Actress

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop has cast another key role.

Revenge and The Gifted actress Elena Satine will play Julia, a mysterious woman from lead character Spike Spiegel's (John Cho) past. Satine joins a cast that also includes Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda and Alex Hassell.

Julia is described as a sultry beauty with a voice to die for. She's the dreamlike object of Spiegel's desire and struggles to survive in a violent world.

‘Cowboy Bebop’: Netflix Series Shuts Down Production For 7-9 Months Following Star John Cho On-Set Injury

Netflix’s upcoming live-action series Cowboy Bebop is going on a lengthy hiatus following a knee injury sustained by lead John Cho on the set of the show in New Zealand.

Sources describe the injury as a freak accident that happened on the last take of a routine and well-rehearsed scene. It requires surgery, for which Cho has been flown back to Los Angeles, and an extensive rehabilitation. The production shutdown is expected to last seven to nine months. The new filming schedule will be set once Cho’s prognosis is clear.

Netflix’s Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Series Wraps Production

Netflix’s live-action series adaptation of the iconic anime Cowboy Bebop has certainly seen its fair share of speed bumps in making its way from development through production but fans can look forward to seeing their favorite space cowboy soon as star Danielle Pineda has taken to Instagram to reveal that filming has officially concluded on the series.

The series first began production in New Zealand in October 2019 but halted shortly after due to star John Cho suffering an injury on set that required a 7-9 month delay as the streamer elected to allow him time to heal and rehabilitate instead of recasting. The downtime allotted the writer’s room to further develop the scripts for the series, including bringing original director Shinichirō Watanabe on as a creative consultant, and begin early work on a second season script. The production would later get the green light from New Zealand to resume shooting in September 2020 following the nation’s COVID-19 shutdown and has now officially concluded.

The series will star Cho (Searching) as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) as Jet Black, Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Faye Valentine, Alex Hassell (Suburbicon) as Vicious, and Elena Satine (Revenge) as Julia. The live-action 10-episode series will be directed by Michael Katleman and Alex Garcia Lopez with Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok) and Javier Grillo-Marxuach serving as writers.

Netflix announced that the Cowboy Bebop 10-episode first season will debut on November 19, 2021.

SYNOPSIS:

Cowboy Bebop is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys,” all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them.

Original Cowboy Bebop Cast Reprise Roles for Japanese Dub of Live-Action Series

Netflix announced on Wednesday that the Japanese dub of the live-action adaptation of Sunrise's Cowboy Bebop anime will feature the original anime's cast reprising their roles. Taiten Kusunoki will replace the late Unshō Ishizuka as the voice of Jet Black. Other new cast members include Masako Isobe as Mao, originally played by Kazuaki Itō, and Romi Park as Shin, whom Nobuyuki Hiyama voiced in the original anime.

Based on the trailer, they got the music and space ship designs right but Edward seems to have been omitted. The fight scenes seem slow as well.

Being a fan of the anime original, I'll watch this out of curiosity and set my expectations low.

The speculation is that Radical Edward will appear at the end of the series.

Currently rated 48% on Rotten Tomatoes with 63 critic reviews counted. Audience Score at 53%.

Critics Consensus:  Maybe next time, Space Cowboy -- this live-action Bebop has a fun enough crew to spend time with, but it disappointingly replaces the soulfulness of the source material with kitsch.

Okay. I'm not even going to bother watching this.

This is why I think live-action adaptations of good anime are unnecessary.

I'm a fan of the anime, and I did enjoy this. Not a lot of people got the anime, but I think the live action remake got it... well mostly. Unfortunately, the first episode of the anime was a bit long and difficult to get into, and they remade the live action to be almost the same. Succeeding episodes are lighter and you start to feel the Bebop vibe. Ending deviated from the anime and it felt a bit forced, but I just assumed they wanted to have another season. Ultimately, Cowboy Bebop isn't an action series and if you don't have that expectation, then you may be entertained.

add:
This is why I think live-action adaptations of good anime are unnecessary.
On the other hand, Samurai X remake was pretty good minus the unrealistic 1vmany fight scenes.

ˆ Well, frankly, anime live action remakes come across to me awkward cosplays, especially the Japanese live-action stuff.
