Armor Wars

For the darker side of what happens when Iron Man tech falls into the wrong hands, Don Cheadle will return as War Machine in a series based on Marvel Comics’ Armor Wars.

Marvel Series ‘Armor Wars’ Finds Its Head Writer With Yassir Lester

Stand-up comedian-turned-actor and screenwriter Yassir Lester is suiting up, Marvel style.

Lester, who starred in the short-loved comedy Making History and worked as a scribe on shows such as The Carmichael Show and Girls, has been tapped as head writer for Armor Wars, the Marvel Studios series that will star Don Cheadle.

The move reunites Lester with Cheadle after the two worked together on Black Monday, a Showtime comedy headlined by Cheadle on which Lester was one of the main writers, co-exec producer and co-star.

Armor Wars is one of Marvel’s shows that keeps alive the legacy of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, who died heroically in Avengers: Endgame. Wars will see Cheadle reprise his role as James Rhodes, aka the heavily armored hero known as War Machine, who must face Stark’s worst fears, that of his high-tech armor falling into the wrong hands.

No director is on board at this stage.

I hope Favreau comes in to direct an episode, maybe even the pilot.

Don Cheadle confirmed that the series is set to start filming in 2023. The Disney+ series will be six episodes in length and will take place following the Secret Invasion series.

Marvel Shakes Up ‘Armor Wars’: Don Cheadle Series Now Being Developed As a Movie

Marvel Studios has shaken up its Armor Wars project, and now what was to have been a series for Disney+ will be redeveloped as a feature film.

The move essentially pushes back the title further down the development slate.

Sources say the studio was committed in getting the story told the right way and in that process realized that a feature was better suited for the project.

Don Cheadle, who is reprising his longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, AKA War Machine, remains on board to star. Yassir Lester, who was acting as head writer on the series, will remain as its feature scribe.

Marvel had been eyeing a 2023 start of production on the series, but the few people who were gearing up for that were notified Thursday of the change of direction. No directors had been officially attached and it is unclear when an Armor Wars feature would pop on Marvel’s timeline of its phases of movies and Disney+ series.

At D23, Don Cheadle gave a small preview of what to expect from Armor Wars. “Coming out of Secret Invasion... they'll understand the challenges that Rhodey is about to face”, says Cheadle.
