Marvel's Wonder Man (Disney+)

Spinning this out from the Disney+ thread....

Marvel Developing 'Wonder Man' Series for Disney+

Wonder Man is the latest Marvel superhero to get the screen treatment.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has teamed up with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, to tackle a live-action series featuring the longtime Marvel character.

Development for what is being titled Wonder Man is in the early stages, but if things crackle, cameras could be rolling in 2023.

Wonder Man, real name Simon Williams, first appeared in Avengers #9 of August, 1964. Originally the character was an industrialist rival to Tony Stark, and was recruited by Baron Zemo to the early supervillain group Masters of Evil. Zemo gave Williams “ionic energy” powers that include superhuman strength, stamina, and invulnerability, and flight through the use of a jetpack. He turned hero soon after his brief affiliation with Zemo’s group.

Wonder Man’s identity is publicly known; Williams is fabulously wealthy, and he supplements his lifestyle by working as a Hollywood stuntman. Both character traits seem like areas a TV show would explore.

Marvel’s Wonder Man Series Has Found Its Grim Reaper

According to TVLine, Straight Outta Compton actor Demetrius Grosse has been tapped for a key role opposite Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man. Grosse is set to play the titular character’s brother Eric Williams, who is also known as Marvel villain Grim Reaper. Production on the superhero drama is expected to start this coming spring.

In the comics, Eric Williams was introduced as the black sheep of his family, which led him to bitterly live in the shadow of his younger brother Simon. He ends up creating an advanced scythe weapon that has the capability to drain the life force energy of people.

The Wonder Man series is being developed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and writer-producer Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community), with Guest serving as the head writer and Cretton executive producing and directing some episodes.

The series will be led by Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams/Wonder Man. He will be joined by Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, who will be reprising his fan-favorite role as Trevor Slattery.

MCU Wonder Man Disney+ Series to Be Under Marvel Spotlight Banner

Marvel’s upcoming Wonder Man series on Disney+ will reportedly released under the recently announced Marvel Spotlight banner.

In a report from Deadline detailing the exit of Destin Daniel Cretton from Marvel’s Avengers: Kang Dynasty, it was noted that Wonder Man is set to begin resuming filming after Thanksgiving. The report also notes that Wonder Man “will be under the new Marvel Spotlight series banner.”

According to Marvel Studios, Marvel Spotlight is a new banner or sub-category for upcoming MCU projects released by Marvel Studios that will not necessarily tie into and reference larger plot threads of the MCU.

The project will be a part of Cretton’s overall deal with the studio. In addition to Cretton, The Photograph filmmaker Stella Meghie will also be directing multiple episodes.

Crew Member Dies Following Accident On Marvel Studios’ ‘Wonder Man’ Production In Studio City

A rigger working at Radford Studios in Studio City died today after falling from a catwalk, Deadline has learned. The male crew member, who died at the scene, was working on the set of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man, but the series was not filming at the time.

The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed and identified him as Juan Carlos Osorio, 41, of Temple City.

A Marvel spokesperson confirmed the news and added, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident.”

Wonder Man is set to start its production next month after the studio had to delay the shoot due to the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes.
