Shogun Creators Tease ‘Darker’ Season 2, Season 3 Will Be ‘An Ending’

Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo say that Shōgun Season 2 will be a “darker chapter” compared to the first season.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, creators Marks and Kondo provided an update about the upcoming second and third seasons of Shōgun. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, Shōgun was originally going to be a miniseries that ended after one season; however, FX and Hulu announced they were developing two new seasons of the acclaimed drama in May 2024.

‘Shogun’ wins record-breaking 14 Emmys at Creative Arts ceremony

“Shogun” won the most Emmys ever for a single season of a television series with 14 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night.

Presenters were saying “Shogun” all night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on the second night of the two-night Creative Arts Emmys, where awards are handed out that don’t quite make the main Primetime Emmys ceremony.

“Shogun,” the FX series about political machinations in feudal Japan, won all but two of the possible 16 trophies it could have claimed on Sunday night, including Emmys for costumes, makeup, editing, stunts and cinematography, along with a best guest actor in a drama Emmy for Néstor Carbonell.

FX’s Shōgun extended a record Emmy year, winning Outstanding Drama Series and three other trophies Sunday night to lead all programs. It amassed 18 Emmys, including its Creative Arts haul, to set a single-year record for programs. The series’ Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won their first career Emmys as respective Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, becoming the second actor and first actress of Asian descent to win their categories, respectively. Earlier Sunday, Frederick E.O. Toye won Directing.

Tough act to follow for season 2.  The next season will likely have a bigger budget so I do hope to see a grandiose beginning to Japan's Edo shogunate.
