It's hard to be an audiophile if you're broke, to be honest. And the time most people get enough money to buy really good audio gear is in their 30's, more so in the Philippines, where pay is a lot lower compared to the likes of Japan, Western EU, and the US.
What I do like about today is that the price of entry for music is a lot lower compared to the time when you had to save up to buy a cassette/CD. Music is also a lot more accessible today than when I was a kid as the records available for sale in the Philippines were limited to what the record companies brought here. If you listened to indie bands, electronica, acid jazz, or some weird musical genre (e.g. Jungle, Garage, "World Music"), you'd have to either buy abroad or pray for it to arrive at Tower Records, or, in the older days, Groove Nation / CD Warehouse.
After Y2K, you could get lucky with pirated CD's but the audio quality was usually not as good, though.
