Recommended DD and/or DTS receiver/processor
« on: Sep 06, 2001 at 11:30 PM »
Good day :).

I would like just to ask recommendations regarding DD and/or DTS receiver/processor.

I am planning to buy one.

1.  How much would I invest?
2.  What are models and their prices?
3.  Is there a model wherein DD and DTS in one receiver/processor?
4.  What brand do you recommend?
5.  What is the cheapest yet a good performer?

Thanx. :D

--> 1.  How much would I invest?

It depends on the rest of your system.  If you have a multi-megabuck set of speakers (e.g., B&W Nautilus/Dunlavy SCIV) , a ~PhP25k Onkyo TX-DS575x won't do.

To play it safe, PhP25k for a receiver would be a good enough number for budgetting purposes.  You can buy models cheaper than PhP25k but at least you have the leeway to choose the next step up in you wanted/needed to.

--> 2.  What are models and their prices?

Talk to Electro-Depot who is also a member of this forum.  They have a shop at Libis that sells receivers/processors.  And go to the malls.  A few months back I posted a mini-review of the stores you can go to.  Just do a search.

--> 3.  DD and DTS in one   receiver/processor?

The latest models (even those of two years back) would typically have both DD & DTS.  In fact, newer ones would have new formats/decoding schemes like DPL2, DTS-ES, DD-EX, etc.

--> 4.  What brand do you recommend?
--> 5.  What is the cheapest yet a good performer?

After listening to Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon, Sony, Sherwood, Rotel, NAD, etc., my personal choice is the Onkyo for entry-level models then NAD for mid-level models.  I'm not saying Denon or Yamaha is bad, their sonic character just isn't to my liking.  This is very subjetive so you should go listen for yourself.

I think your first question will influence the answer for your other questions. If you have a tight budget go for the entry level like the Yamaha 496 or Onkyo 484 which is more or less 17-19T+ and add a little bit more and you get a denon 1601. With more budget around 25-30T you can get mid models from the same brands and you get more power and better features. If you have more budget your choices becomes wider. I think the choice can only be made by listening and trying them out. I think choosing what brand is like choosing between Benz, BMW, Jaguar or Volvo. There are all good its just matter of taste and requirements. I suggest dont decide now since there are new Receivers coming like the Denon 1602 or Onkyo 494 with DPL2 . They will be available anytime now. I wont recommend you get the lowest model if you can stretch your budget. I made that mistake so now Im saving again for a better receiver even if its only two months old. Im satisfied and happy with the Yamaha 496 but I need more features and I only realize it when I bought it. I suggest go for the mid models but if you have unlimited budget go for the best.

Nujnuj,

I just need more inputs and Im interested with DPL2. I was not thinking about it when I got the 496. Another thing is the audio. Not too much setting for audio like 5 channel stereo. Other than that okay naman yung receiver it sound very good and very simple and a lot of features for HT. Medyo tight kasi budget ko and I  wanted to upgrade na agad (You shouldnt rush when buying).Dont think that Yamaha is not good, I recommend that you try it. Try also Harman Kardon receiver, I saw it in audio den this afternoon, around 19T+ lang. Looks okay but this time I want to make sure before I buy again.

mr. electronics depot man,

do you accept BPI deferred scheme? Do you have other branches aside from the one in Libis? Thanks

Hmm, pero di ba kung Onkyo/Denon/Yamaha level eh ang analogy is closer to Toyota/Honda?  Kasi kung Benz/BMW, eh dapat mga Theta/Mark Levinson etc. na ang katapat.  :)

On a separate note, I just wanted to reiterate...your choice of electronics would be dependent on your choice of speakers.  If it were my money, I'd choose speakers first before a receiver since speakers typically last an upgrade or two.  Your receiver will be good only till the next major format (e.g., when DVD-A or multichannel SACD comes to full bloom).

Naku!  Utang para sa bisyo.  :)

Seriously, I did this once when I bought my first LD player.  Since then, I've personally vowed never to finance hi-fi/HT ever again.  If I don't have the cash to pay in full, then I don't deserve the upgrade.

This personal policy made me more prudent in saving and choosing my next purchase.  Bu then again, your mileage may vary.

among rtsy,

your point is well taken, thank you. :) Since this would be my first attempt in a HT setup, I would like to carefully select the components I need. I've started off with a pioneer dvd player which is currently hooked to a kenwood stereo receiver with Wharfedale Diamond Vs. I noticed most of the recommended receivers doesn't include pioneer, why so?

I'm thinking of purchasing front speakers first before the receiver; what models would suit a small living room? budget probably would be 12k

Wow.  As in, tuta, maamo?  :)

--> your point is well taken, thank you. :)

Just to be sure and safe, I am not in any way saying people who use credit card financing should be shot.  I am merely sharing my own thoughts/values on this practice.  If on the other hand, setting up the HT by card financing will:

1--save you more money since hindi ka na manonood ng sine sa labas
2--save a marriage/get you committed to a great partner
3--make you the most satisfied and happy person you think you could be

then by all means, charge it!  :)

--> I noticed most of the recommended
--> receivers doesn't include pioneer, why so?

I can only remember 1 Pioneer integrated amp I liked.  The A400X.  And I liked it since it doesn't have the characteristic Pioneer amp sound...rather bright, bass-light.

Good question though...I also often wonder why Pioneer's great success with DVD players and RPTVs did not ripple through their receiver line.

--> I'm thinking of purchasing front speakers
--> first before the receiver

Great idea.  IMHO, speakers define the overall character of your set-up.  The electronics you'd buy would depend on how well they'd match your chosen set of speakers.  Ideally of course, you buy the best matching electronic/speaker set-up but few of us can do this in one blow.

--> what models would suit a small
--> living room? budget probably would be 12k

Many spekers can be had at or below PhP12k.  I'd shorlist the new B&W 300 series, Mission 771/772 or even the 73 or 70-series.  I'd visit Upscale and hear PSB New Alpha and Acoustic Energy Aegis 100.   I'd probably also check out Paradigm over at Audio Den.  And of course, I'd look for Tannoy Mercury's.

Bring you favorite CDs and DVDs.  And make sure to try to audition with a complete HT set-up so you are able to set a goal/target.

Hi Alfie,

Been to ED yesterday, saw about 6 or more Denon 1602 at the store. Don't know if all are reserve already, but the store clerk offered it to me at 23K. The people there has no idea on the sale posted here, but indicated that their manager was the one to decide on it.

Hi Electronics-Depot,

Thanks for having the sale for PinoyDVD members.  I'm sure someone here will benefit.

I'm primarily interested in either the Denon AVR-1802 or AVR-2802.  Do you carry those as well, if so, how much are they?  Thank you.

ED,

How long will your sale for PinoyDVD last? Do you have  limited units only for the sale? I want to know lang sana because Im planning sell my Yamaha 496 which I got last month only pero baka ubos na 1602 by the time I sell my amp and balik na sa original price ang 1602.

Thnaks for giving the members of PinoyDVD special discount on the Denon 1602. ;D

Same as PEP, Im more interested with the Denon AVR 2802 (6X 90watts, DTS EX, DD EX, Dolby Prologic II, preamp outputs for all channels, etc.), do you have this in stock?  How much?

If not, kailan kaya? I know that it is very limited even in America.

Hello there!  I was looking at the Denon 1602 and it has an output of 75 watts per channel in 6 ohms or 8 ohms.  What does this mean?  If I have speakers of 100 watts each would this amp power them.  What if the other way around like having an amp with an output wattage more than my speakers.  Would this cause damage to my speakers?  I am no techie hope you guys can help me with this.  I am eyeing an Onkyo 595 amp with the same wattage output for upgrade (DD, DTS, DPL 2)

it is better to use an amp with an output wattage more than what the power spec of your speakers coz using a smaller amp may actually damage your speakers. it is actually easier to damage a speaker with low power because power does not damage speakers, distortion does. nabasa ko lang ito sa isang site sa internet. very informative especially yung isang topic doon tungkol sa bose. i was a bose fan then, but nung ienumerate niya ang mga reasons not to buy bose speakers, napunta ang hilig ko sa mga di kilala but really good speakers like paradigm,b&w,dynaudio etc.

Enygma- Thanks for your reply!  If most of the HT speakers, I guess the good ones are selling speakers w/c carry at least 100 watts, why are they releasing new models of receivers with low ouput/channel wattage?  Especially the ones with DPL 2?   :-/

yung nakikita nating 100 watts for example sa likod ng speaker natin, usually yun na ang maximum power wattage na kakayanin ng speaker natin but if you will read the specs of the speaker (yung brochure itself) nakalagay doon ang minumum or recommended input power na pwede nating gamitin. for a 100 watts speaker, 25watts up to 75 watts ang recommended ng most speaker manufacturers.

enygma - so what you mean to say is that even if I had speakers with 100 watts max output, I can still go for the receivers with only 75 wattage output per channel and not harming the speakers or the amp?  I'm really dumb when it comes to these technical haloobaloo.  And it could help me make my decisions re: buying a DPL 2 receiver with only 75 watts/channel output compared to just a DD/DTS receiver but with 100 watts/channel ouput.  Which would you suggest? my front, center and surround speakers are all 100 watts.  What receiver would be OK for this set-up? Thanks!
