Unlike the R1, which is a three-disc set (two DVD-18 flippers and a DVD-9), this R3 is a 5-disc set (five DVD-9s). It is not as bulky as the recent
Friends releases, though, since inside the box are two double-DVD cases (swing-type) and one single Amaray-type case.
Unlike many recent TV series on DVD releases where the picture quality varies from episode to episode (like
Soap,
Three's Company and even
V: The Complete Series), all episodes in this set have excellent picture quality. It looks like they're been restored. Sound is DD Mono, though, as the show was originally recorded in.
The episodes themselves truly have the campy, superhero-feel, like the old Adam West
Batman show did. This is the original season set in the 1940s, while the subsequent seasons changed the setting of the show to modern times and the "comic book-feel" of the show was significantly lessened.
I have only scanned through the Retrospective Documentary, but the absence of any participation of Lyle Waggoner is obvious.
False advertising: The packaging (both the box and the jacket) claims there is audio commentary on the pilot episode by Lynda Carter and producer Douglas Cramer. This is
not included in the R3 release. Removing audio commentary tracks from the R3 releases seems to be the norm for Warner these days (
The West Wing Seasons 1 & 2, this set).
