DVD+R Media Quality and Compatibility
« on: Aug 01, 2004 at 10:51 AM »
You need to download DVDInfoPro for reading the DVD+R's media code. Additionally, you can use the software to test for drive speed and possible media errors.

If you want to cross-reference your findings with other users, visit VideoHelp.com. They run a fairly comprehensive database of branded and generic media ratings. Please note that even if certain DVD+Rs have the same brand/make, chances are you're testing discs from different batches so results may vary greatly from country to country.

In reporting media performance, please state the following:

1. Media code
2. Physical description of the disc
3. Place of purchase
4. Price per piece
5. Claimed burn speed and the speed you burned at
6. DVDInfoPro media test for read errors
7. Test platforms (DVD-ROM and standalone players)
8. Notes (if any)

To see a sample post, please visit the related DVD-R thread.

RIDATA DVD+R 4X

Media Code: RITEKR02
Physical Description:

Bilib ako dati sa media na ito, pero hindi na ngayon.
Nagha-hang kasi ito sa Pioneer 355 standalone.

Ang RITEK R03 naman (+R, 8x, P35. each), "No Disc" sa Pioneer 366 when burned at 8x, although OK naman when burned at 4x.

Dahil laging rave reviews ang Ritek/Ridata sa mga message forums ng mga kano, akala ko magaling talaga ito.  Hindi rin naman pala.  Well... to each his own siguro.  What works well for one might not work well for another.

i have yet to try this disc on a standalone but in the cdfreaks forum, they mentioned this media is highly variable.  there's a possibility u might get a batch which doesn't work well.  so far, i'm getting good burns on this media with a smooth reading curve.  the -R 4X (RITEKG04), however, doesn't work well for me.

Hindi naman siguro batch problem.

Ang totoo, I ALWAYS get a good burn on RIDATAs. Nero Transfer Rate Test ALWAYS shows a very smooth curve (similar to your graph on Reply #6 above), even smoother than some of my CMC 8x burns.  Ang problema, sablay sa standalone.

Kahit gaanong kaganda pa ang maging resulta ng burn sa mga test utilities, kung palyado naman ang play sa standalone ko, wala rin.

At any rate, if the R02 works well for you, then I'm happy for you, my friend.  To each his own.

i see.  i'll give this media a try on my standalone.  i'm planning to use this media only for data backup since i use the CMC -R for movie backups.  thanks for the warning tho.

update on RITEKR02: i burned 2 movies using this media and both played smooth on a standalone samsung dvd-p248a.  so i guess in my case, i could also use this media for movie backups :)  however, both were burnt using RITEKR02@YUDEN000T02 strategy swap on my FW so i think this could also be a  factor

it's actually a tweak to improve your burn on a specific media.  the firmware of your writer has its own list of supported media (including the speed) and its corresponding write strategy.  sometimes, the write strategy for a given media isn't good and replacing it with another strategy might improve the burn.

there are unofficial firmware for the NEC drives which already contain such tweaks.  for Lite-on and BenQ drives, you can modify your firmware manually using patchers like OmniPatcher and MCSE.  these are the only drives i know of

however, be warned that doing so voids the warranty of your drive and may render it useless in the event of a misflash

so far wala pang paltos yung mga backups ko when i used that. Pro pag +r na cheap ang ok is yung CMC-MAG-F01 (HP 8x) or PRODISC-R04-04 (Iomega 8x).  25 bucks a pop lang.  Too bad out of stock na yung HP

OT: i've observed lately there are problems with the availability of DVD media in CDR-King.  here in Cebu, all outlets have run out of stocks.  it seems they haven't had any re-stock lately.  been checking for 3 weeks now :(

how's the situation there in Manila?

havent tried pa yung philips na +/-r pro pareho lang ata sila ng media code ng HP and IOMEGA.  Yung sony naman ibang media code and medyo anemic IMHO yung dye. And at 30 bucks each id rather get the IOMEGA ones

Yung Philips na nasubukan ko is yung +RW and DVD+RDL pa lang nila.  Yung +RW nila ilang beses ko nang pinatungan ok pa din both on my console and DVD player.  Yung DL naman ng Philips ok din after i burned a game there.  Bad trip nga lang coz 2.4x sha.. it takes a while to finish burning. Buti sana kung at least 4x man lang hehehehe

the HP and Philips they used to supply have MIDs of CMC MAG  AE1  (DVD-R 8x) and CMC MAG E01 (DVD+R 8x).

and the Iomega DVD+R 8x have an MID of PRODISC R04 (which is a 16x DVD+R id)
but i couldn't even get it to burn at 8x on an LG 4163B writer.

the Sony that they have at the moment have MIDs of  SONY08D1 (DVD-R 8x) and SONY D11 (DVD+R 8x).    accdg to videohelp.com,   the SONY08D1 are of higher quality and better than those CMC and Ritek discs.   so although Sony's dye arent much darker than say CMC Magnetics or Riteks, it doesn't mean they are inferior.

Hmm, I've tried Iomega 8x DVD+R and they are identified as CMC disks (I don't remember the exact designation). I've had some problems but these may be due to the problems I've been having with my external drive enclosure.

I'm trying out the Sony 8x disks as well. So far so good. For both however, I think my average burn speed hasn't gone beyond 4x using a Sony DRU-720 writer in a USB2 external enclosure.

i recently upgraded to this burner and  it allows 16X burn speed for the iomega DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR04). but due to my USB enclosure's low transfer rate (7MBps), i can only burn these @4X.  what firmware are you using btw?  mine's currently A104.

it also depends on how well supported this media is in your drive.  AFAIK, the LG GSA-4163B can burn the SONYD11 and SONY08D1 with great results :)  still have to try it myself.  i'll post some scans after i run some tests.

a tip for those who have their burners in an external enclosure.  run the Nero CD-DVD Speed under Nero's Toolkit, insert a disc on your drive and hit F6 (or Run Test ->Burst Rate from menu).  check the reported burst rate.  this will give an idea on the transfer speed of your drive.  Refer to this for the maximum speed you can burn at.

my drive's with A103 only because when i upgraded to A104, it would fail writing to Ritek 4x DVD+Rs which i had lots in stock back then, although it writes okay to the  cheaper Premium 4x DVD-Rs.   so  i flash backed.  it could be because my drive is old (Dec 2004 batch with A100 firmware).

i have also tasted those Benqs 4x DVD+Rs (it came in cases which was a bonus).
it looks like a good media based on your scans.  (i don't currently have a scanning drive to test media quality).  too bad wala na akong makita sa cdrking (megamall / fairview)

pa-post naman po ng SONY08D1 / SONY D11 scans =)

do you mean the RiDATA 4X DVD+R (RITEKR02)?  this seems to work well on my LG.  here's a scan on the first burn with this media.  so far, looking great :D

so far, the BenQ 4X DVD+R works well on both my Lite-on LDW-411S and my LG GSA-4163B drives.  the included case also makes it more attractive than other media of the same price range.  too bad it's been out of stocks for weeks already.
