A number of reports have been circulating around the Net in the last couple of days, regarding those updated Batman special edition DVDs that Warner's been working on. Both Dark Horizons and Batman on Film have posted some interesting details on this. Reportedly, director Tim Burton re-recorded his audio commentary tracks for Batman and Batman Returns with a "special guest." Extras are expected to include trailers, TV spots, vintage footage, new featurettes and a feature-length documentary (for Batman). Joel Schumacher has also apparently recorded new commentary for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, and is reportedly working on a new, 150-minute extended cut of Forever to be included on the DVD via seamless branching. At least the original Batman is expected to street in May (just prior to the release of Batman Begins in theaters) and a box set of all four films is planned for October or November.

here's the complete article from batman-on-film.com:

The Scarecrow? Nope! More BATMAN 1-4 SE news!
Author: Jett
Tuesday, January 18, 6:25 AM, 8:45 PM CST: This comes from a trusted source which comes from their trusted source - sort of how it works sometime. Anyway, he provided me with a bit more info on the upcoming SE's of the first four WB BATMAN films -

• BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS have been finished for a while now. Tim Burton re-recorded his commentary tracks with a "guest." Seems he thought his original commentary was too boring.

• Regarding those films, they'll look like this: Disc 1 - Remastered picture and sound with Commentary. Disc 2 - Trailers, TV Spots, Vintage footage and a new featurette on the film. BATMAN is expected to get the most treatment with a feature length documentary. BATMAN RETURNS will feature Jett from BATMAN ON FILM breaking down why it sucks as bad as BATMAN AND ROBIN [Sorry, couldn't resist - Jett].

• Our source regarding FOREVER -

"Joel recorded commentary tracks for the theatrical edition along with BATMAN AND ROBIN (Look for a 'special guest' on that track as well). Afterwards Joel decided to ask WB to recut the film back to something that resembles his original edit. WB agreed and gave him a budget to do so. Joel is currently in Burbank working on some alterations to the film.

WB wants to also include the original theater version of the film, Which kind of paints Joel into a corner. You see because they will have to use a process called 'seamless branching.' This works with films like T2 or ALIENS where chunks of the film were simply taken out. In the case of FOREVER entire parts of the film were re-edited. So Joel may be forced to alter the original cutting decisions to keep it possible to seamlessly branch with the theatrical version. But rest assured the extended cut will clock in somewhere around 2 hrs. 35 mins. It just might take place in the order of events the theatrical version presented rather than the shooting script or workprint edit. With the exception of the Two Face escaping scene, Which will come before the credits - meaning we might loose that nifty WB/Batlogo morph.

Joel knows he is considered the devil to some in the Bat-world and wants this to be his redemption. He's going to add as much footage as possible back in. Also some of the effects were not finished in the early workprint and they need to be finished. He has been given a small budget to work with for that. All new effects will be digital. Which with todays technology will look better than most of the CGI back in 1995.

Current title is going to be '10th Anniversary Extended Director's Cut.'"

Our source says that WB is looking into several marketing/release options -

• BATMAN Special Edition with free BATMAN BEGINS ticket in May, with a box set similar to that of the MATRIX Collection in Oct/Nov.

• All four films out separately in May, or in a box set. This solely depends on whether Joel's new cut is finished or not.

• Holding off on all releases until Oct/Nov in a box set without single releases. This also holds hope for a bonus 9th disc.

Now, this ain't gospel here, so take it as "strong" rumor right now. But it sounds great! And I really want to see a new, extended cut of FOREVER.... Nothing is certain right now, Except the fact that these films will be in stores sometime in 2005....

Batman DVD Giftset Coming October 18
Source: The Hollywood Reporter July 26, 2005

The Hollywood Reporter says that Warner Home Video will release a series of two-disc special editions of the four original "Batman" movies from the late 1980s and '90s.

Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin will be released October 18. They will be available individually and as a gift set, "Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997."

Each special-edition DVD features a new digital transfer of the movie. Bonus features include director commentaries by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton, cast and crew interviews, several new documentaries, "making of" featurettes and nine music videos from Prince, Seal and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Dude were you able to get it? ... There is a cheaper $20 flat rate at Sam's Club, I got it last Thursday...

No wonder why, most stores around May-June month this year made a major price cut to individual discs and the anthology boxed set.

from the digitalbits:

BUT... the Batman on Film website is reporting that Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin  will be released on 10/18 as new 2-disc sets. That's the same day as our own sources indicate the recent Batman Begins will be released (and our sources have confirmed the 10/18 date for the other Batman  films as well). All four titles will reportedly also be available on that day in a box set called Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997. Each 2-disc set will feature a new anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, along with new director commentaries by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton, cast and crew interviews, several new documentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, music videos from Prince, Seal and the Smashing Pumpkins, trailers, TV spots, vintage footage, etc. There's also word that Schumacher has created a new, 150-minute director's cut of Batman Forever, and that both the original cut and the new cut will be included on the DVD via seamless branching. Thanks to Bits  reader Seth C. for the heads-up.

Okay... a quick follow-up on yesterday's Batman  news. We've confirmed with sources in the know that the new 2-disc Batman Forever DVD will NOT include a new director's cut as previously rumored. It was apparently something that was considered, but we're told it ultimately didn't happen. Just FYI.

BATMAN AVOIDS SITH STREET
Retailers predict an Oct. 18 release for Begins
By Susanne Ault  7/29/2005

JULY 29 | October brings a whole lot of the Caped Crusader.

Retailers are circling Oct. 18 as the likely street date for Warner's Batman Begins. This is the same date the studio releases Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997, which holds new two-disc special editions of the first four franchise films.

Packed inside Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin will be 18 hours of fresh bonus features, including Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher commentaries, exclusive documentaries and making-of featurettes. The Anthology will retail for $79.92. The special editions also will be available individually for $26.99 apiece. Orders are due Sept. 20.

Warner declined comment on the street date for Batman Begins. But the studio anticipates it will be a major fourth-quarter title.

Several weeks ago, Warner had notified stores to expect Batman Begins on Oct. 25, according to retail sources. The shift up might have been prompted by a need to stay clear of Fox juggernaut Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, which has been slotted for Nov. 1.

"I think [Batman Begins] is on a good date," said a big-box retailer buyer. "Star Wars now comes [a couple of weeks] later."

Predicting fourth-quarter fortunes, the buyer believes Star Wars and Warner's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will rank tops in sales. Next should come Batman Begins and Paramount's War of the Worlds.

here's the latest from The Rumor Mill of the digitalbits:

First up, Batman Begins. We've gotten word from sources on the contents of the 2-disc DVD set (tentative street date 10/18), which we now expect to include anamorphic widescreen video, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, audio commentary with director Christopher Nolan and co-writer David Goyer, 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including The Journey Begins, Genesis of the Bat, Path to Discovery, Shaping Mind and Body, Gotham City Rises, Cape and Cowl, The Tumbler, Saving Gotham City, Reflections on Writing and Digital Batman), the film's teaser and theatrical trailers and at least a few Easter eggs. Most of this information appears to be confirmed by a quick search of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) website. The BBFC reviews film and DVD content in advance of release and issues ratings (much like the MPAA does in the U.S. for theatrical films).
