Foreign language DVDs you'd recommend
« on: Aug 10, 2004 at 02:49 PM »
I used to hate having to watch a movie while minding the subtitles, but I've recently been "educated" by a friend (who also happens to be a Pinoydvd member) to explore the wonderful world of foreign films! Those I've watched recently that I've liked immensely include:

Run Lola Run (German)
What To Do In Case of Fire (German)
Chaos (French)
Chungking Express (Cantonese)
My Sassy Girl (Korean)

..among others. I was hoping that you guys could recommend other DVDs in the foreign language genre that in your opinion, are worth taking a look at. I recently discovered a rental shop near our place with a remarkable collection of foreign films.

Thanks in advance for the help, appreciate it!  ;D

The Three Colors Trilogy : Red, White, Blue by K.Kieslowski  ( French )

My Life As A Dog - Lasse Hallstrom   ( Swedish )

Dark Blue World - Jan Sverak ( Czech )

Il Postino - Michael Radford ( Italian )

Life Is Beautiful - Roberto Benigni ( Italian )

Amelie - Jean-Pierre Jeunet ( French )

Y Tu Mama Tambien - Alfonso Cuaron

plus a whole lot of japanese/french/german movies but that would be breaking some of this forum's rules :)

You shouldn't missed....Walter Sales' brilliant CENTRAL STATION. It's a Brazilian movie and just get a hanky before you watch the ending.  :'(

Yes, I've been hearing a lot about Kurosawa's work, guess it's about time I explore it. I've also had a friend highly recommend Central Station, if only I can find it  ;D Battle Royale I think I saw sa Red Hot Video, I think I'll give it a go next time.  :)

Chow Yun-Fat movies (with English subs) are fantastic. Many have been directed by John Woo. You can get them at video stores along Ongpin. Don't get daunted by covers that overflow with Chinese characters. Staff ready to assist non-Chinese.

dunforgiven, Irreversible is the one that also stars Monica Belucci right?  :)

keating, Red Hot is along A. Mabini St. in San Juan. Coming from Shaw, turn right at the one-way street between the Red Ribbon and Shell stations. They do have many foreign movies, a lot of them Asian. Lots of arthouse flicks also. I don't know how they compare with Video 48 or the shop in Rockwell, but you might want to give it a try because a n t s and I have been there several times and he's always had something that he wasn't able to rent at Rockwell. I suspect the owner's also a Pinoydvd member, I saw a green(?) 90's Galant parked outside with the Pinoydvd sticker  ;D

Bokong, I actually turned down a lot of Chinese films that a shopkeeper in Hong Kong was suggesting a couple of years back.. Wasn't into it at the time. Sayang! Oh well, couldn't have known then which were the better ones anyway, hehe..  ;D

I'm going to have to list all these titles down if I'm going to remember all of them!  ;D

I'm recommending several titles that might hook people to watch films with non-English subtitles. They are not necessarily the best but these were the films that lured me into world cinema.

Bicycle Thief
Seven Samurai
Rashomon

OT: If you want to watch Akira Kurosawa masterpieces on the big screen, here's your chance. UP Film Institute will screen Rashomon, Seven Samurai and Ikiru on February 26, 2005.

das boot is one of my favorites. it was a ww2 that takes place in a ww2 german sub. Dialog is in German but the director's cut has the original actors dub it in english.

My other favorite is 'year in provance' from the autobiographical novel of peter mayle. its an english film based in France.
