Carnivale
« on: Aug 30, 2004 at 12:52 PM »
HBO Asia has been showing very brief teasers of Carnivale, that quirky, surreal, X-Filish drama series involving a traveling circus and a showdown between good and evil during the 1930's.

And here I almost gave up hope that this series would be shown here...maybe not in September, but during October, probably when the final season of Sex And The City is over.

Nope. This will be shown on October 10 at 8:15pm, right after the 15-minute "Making Of Carnivale: The Show Behind The Show" at 8:00pm.

Caught the first episode last night--it was excellent. The show really deserved its Emmys for Cinematography and Art Direction for a Single-Camera series. The opening credits were great as well, particularly those Tarot cards that transform into 3D images.

Looks like my Tuesday nights will be taken again...  8)

Watched it and it sorta felt like a Vertigo graphic novel, but on cable TV. It may interest you guys to know that Clancy Brown, who plays Brother Justin, also does the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob Squarepants.

Saw another episode awhile ago.Was that the 3rd episode?Missed last week. I'm assuming Ben is looking for his parents? How was he able to locate the old woman?Kinda didn't understand that.

Ashketchum walang other time slot for previous replays?

It has an interesting story line.

Yup, that was the 3rd episode.

Ben's Mom died in the 1st episode, and he's continously being haunted by jumbled visions that includes a tuxedo-clad guy being chased by a soldier and a heavily tattooed man. This tuxedo-clad man was revealed to be someone named Henry Scudder, a former member of the Carnivale who could be Ben's father.

Ben "located" the house through several means: he had an old picture of his mom with a truck bearing the name "Big Sky Farms". Asking a townsperson about the farm revealed that the former owner of the farm was the old woman. He also saw the old woman's house in a dream, but the woman was much younger, and she was with Henry Scudder; the woman also claimed that she sent him the dream...

HBO kinda fast-tracked the airing of the pilot episode--they aired it on Sunday, Oct 10, replayed it the next day, Oct. 11, then aired the 2nd episode on Oct. 12. As of now, its regular airing times are Tuesdays and Fridays.

ah ok thanks for the rewind. :) Must not miss another episode.Nagtaka tuloy ako bakit ang bilis.

So that is why the little guy was saying Ben was the spitting image of somebody.
Why did the old woman send him the dream in the first place?Did she have relations with henry aside from ben's mother?

^ erm, is scudder his dad or am i getting ahead of myself? i could've sworn that it was a fact.

---does anyone know what a "gentleman geek" is? that's what scudder was.

incidentally, the chubbier girl at the peep show is the daughter of meatloaf. ;D

Interesting stuff: The slowly-growing sinister Brother Justin Clayton's initial's are J.C.   ;D

Henry Scudder is Ben's dad, but so far it has yet to be actually revealed on the show; as of ep 3, it was just implied but never confirmed.

And "The Gentleman Geek" was the name of Scudder's Carnivale act, who's supposed to be some kind of super-polite chap wearing a tuxedo and top hat.

A "geek" is the name given to a man whose carnival act consists of biting off the heads of chickens and other weird feats. This is actually where we got the word "geek" which now has a very different meaning. Scudder called himself "The Gentleman Geek" because he wore a tuxedo during his act.

Last week's episode was truly disturbing, particularly Dora Mae's fate at the end.

Even more interesting trivia: The names of the 2 lead characters (Ben Hawkins, Justin Crowe) aren't just coincidental--both names represent birds that in turn represent light and darkness: the hawk is commonly associated with the Sun or light (Egyptian Gods Ra, Horus), while the crow is usually associated with the night, war, and death.

Excellent season finale last night. HBO aired the final 2 episodes in a row, and I was riveted for almost 2 hours--who will live, who will die, who will be resurrected (er, we already know that one)...  ;D

Darn, it's gonna be a long, long wait for Season 2.

Watched the final episode of Season 2 last night on HBO. Great ending, with a twist right at the end--it's really too bad that HBO cancelled this show, as it had everything--excellent writing, a very good supporting cast, and high production values (which unfortunately did the show in).  :P

You were right, Elf! This was an engaging show. Once I saw the first episode, I couldn't wait to finish both seasons. Was able to see some middle episodes of the first season when they aired this on HBO a couple of years back but since I had a hard time understanding how the pieces fit, had to bail then. The involvement of Battlestar Galactica's Ronald Moore with the series convinced me to check this out again. Glad I did.
