just an update..i went to pier last weekend, kaunti na lang talaga ang mga padating nila.

I passed by a friendly junk Jap hifi importer here in Davao and found a pair of unusual speakers. These were released in mid-90s by Canon, the Japanese camera firm, but were made exclusively in UK designed by Allen Boothroyd of Meridian's Boothroyd and Stuart (http://www.stereophile.com/content/canon-s-35-loudspeaker) for worldwide distribution. It was originally quoted at $400 without the stands.

Canon stopped its hifi line after this but when the S-35 was out on the market, it was called Darth Vader, black jellyfish, mushroom, or helmet speakers. I'd agree with Stereophile's review of the S-35 and would even say it was a bit generous (Canon probably paid a full page ad). But then again, the S-35 is a rare speaker and would probably qualify to be in a museum that showcases industrial designs. So, I took this pair home.

I have to post the photos here -- not on Vintage Gallery thread -- since the S-35 does not qualify as vintage hifi.

Palagay ko ser ang lawak ng sweet spot nyan, or the whole room will be the sweet spot.
Congrats sir!

Salamat, yes it's omni-directional. I was supposed to pick up an old Leak 2060 (sandwich-type woofers) just for collection last Monday but there's a croaking sound from one of the speakers when I tested it with the volume reasonably pumped up. So, I bought the Canon S-35 instead.

What's good about the S-35 is that my wife likes it a lot. She thinks it sounds impressive and yes, she also noted she couldn't locate where the sound was coming from. Very nice for a condo unit, she said, since it produces 'good sound' plus its artsy look.

molins,

Got it from a trader who informs me of used hifi arrivals from Japan. Meron akong nakita nito 3 years ago, same source, pero walang stands kaya hindi ko kinuha. Malaking bagay yung original stands kasi this unconventional design needs optimum placement. BTW, the iron stand is 21 inches high to the base of the speaker assembly. Height from the ground to the co-axial speaker firing down is 26 inches. Weight per speaker including the stand is about 9 kgs. S-35 is flat black, except the sound diffuser below the "helmet" -- medyo basa pa ng Pledge nung kunan ko ng photos kaya uneven black ang lumabas.

buzzworth,

Ang daming surplus speakers na pwede sa T-amp (I got my first two units of this 5 or 6 years ago). Ang maganda sa Jap surplus, high efficient karamihan at warm US west-coast sound. Dapat dalhin mo yung T-amp mo with alkaline batteries sa tindahan.

I know at least 4 guys here in PDVD who are in our group but not very active in posting. Umiikot kami ng bahay to listen to our set ups -- pero karamihan plaka ang gamit pag group sessions.

na try ko na to,so far gentle naman sila, ;D ;D ;D ;D, taga-davao lang ako sir, so far ikaw lang kilala ko na active sa pdvd, no chance talaga to try hifi setup and vintage sound, compare ko sana sound ng portable setup ko sa mga bigatin na setup, and to know more the meaning of MUSIC ;D, hope marinig ko mga setup ng group mo, in the near future.. ;)thanks

molins,

A friendly tip: I think you should circulate more to know audio enthusiasts here personally, not just through discussion boards. I'm surprised you haven't met other PDVD guys in Davao yet.

gutchy,

The trader's asking price is P7k/pair. Relatively mura na.

Yes, that's Joel Yap's store. This is what I mean by circulating and getting to know personally the people behind this hobby. Maliit lang ang Davao for audio enthusiasts like us. When you gain their confidence, you'll get texts and phone calls on info and weekend events we are all interested in. If Joel knows you as someone seriously into hifi, you'll get a good discount. The good speakers and amps, however, are not displayed in that outlet. They're in an old bodega/repair shop on Sta. Ana Ext. near the wharf. What you saw is a good pair -- the Pioneer S-55twin if I'm not mistaken.

it looks something like that, but not the horn type tweeter, they sound very well, considering the noise, and a small tamp and ipod , 91db pala sensitivity, a good plus for t amp user,  ;D, i will try to audition again some speakers, specially sa bodega, hopefully, yes world is too small for those who love music, our universal language..  ;D

Sorry, I posted the wrong model. The one on display is Pioneer S-55twin SD (not horn tweeter). That pair has been there for about a year now and started with a P6k price. With the stands, P5k is reasonable, probably even cheap. Not many speakers in Joel's bodega now but the Coral X-VII at an efficiency rating of 94 to 97db/w/meter would be a good option for your t-amp. I don't think the t-amp could drive its 12-inch woofer, but at least, when you move to bigger amps, you'll have a big speaker to hear low notes from those old Hammonds.
