Titanic (Special Collector's Edition) (3-Disc Set)
List Price: $29.99
Amazon Price: $19.49 (35% off)
DVD Release Date: October 25, 2005
Number of discs: 3

here's what i read from the rumor mill of digitalbits.com

A few weeks ago, we mentioned the possibility that Paramount was going to be releasing a new special collector's edition of James Cameron's Titanic in 2005. We have a little bit of new information. The DVD production work on the title will be handled by 20th Century Fox. Word has leaked out of Fox's European operation that the title is expected to be a 4-disc edition, tentatively set for release in the Summer of 2005. This seems to confirm what we've heard from our industry sources - specifically that the studio was considering a 4-disc presentation. However, from what we've heard, production has not yet officially begun on the title (or is only just starting to happen). NOTHING is set in stone about this release yet, and our sources are telling us that a late 2005 (4th Qtr) release at the earliest is more likely. So don't start counting your chickens yet, but if you're a fan, be comforted in knowing that a better DVD version of the film is finally on the radar in a more substantial way.

Stay tuned...

this is to verify that the previous digitalbits post refers to the European Release of Titanic.

more news:

According to Italian home theater magazine AF Digitale, 20th Century Fox may be in the process of finally releasing the long-awaited Titanic: Special Edition in early 2005. Details are still a bit sketchy, but the magazine reports that the film will receive a mega four-disc set featuring a new DTS ES 6.1 audio track. Of the extras, expect commentaries, deleted footage and mountains of other bonus material. Keep in mind that nothing official has been announced yet. But the fact that it is being reported by a major European publication is good news. My only hesitation is the "early 2005" timeframe. A DVD project of this magnitude would take a good amount of time and planning. For an early 2005 release date, this thing must be in production already, or even nearing completion. So if it has been in production for some time, why haven't we heard rumblings about it until now?

This is indeed good news especially to the wifey.  I was holding off buying the current release 'cause waiting for an anamorphic WS and Special Ed. version.  :)

same here....was waiting.... there are a lot of scenes removed from the original film to make it less sensitive....eg..  the rich ones were given a chance to use the radios to call loved ones etc... ...

4-disc edition? Wow...hopefully it's in a special packaging too! It's about time Titanic (& James Cameron too!  ^-^) deserves to be in the best DVD edition! Bring it on!  :-*

We've got some BIG DVD news for you today. Paramount is holding a special event next week to announce the fall DVD release of the Titanic: The Definitive Special Edition. We expect to have all the details on Tuesday afternoon, but as we've reported in The Rumor Mill recently, our sources tell us to expect a 2-disc and 4-disc set, patterned after New Lines Lord of the Rings DVD releases. The 4-disc will have the film spread over 2 discs for maximum anamorphic widescreen video quality, along with deleted scenes, literally hours of behind-the-scenes material, audio commentary and much more. Stay tuned on this!

from DVD Times:

Titanic Special Edition Worldwide release in October
Paramount Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment International have announced the Worldwide DVD release of Titanic in two new DVD editions for October 2005. In collaboration with director James Cameron Titanic will be available as both a 2-disc Special Edition and 4-Disc Collector's Edition, each filled with bonus features.

The two-disc special edition will include a branching feature, enabling fans to view a wide selection of never-before-seen footage. The four-disc collector’s edition will be the ultimate for film and DVD enthusiasts – containing numerous deleted scenes, new in-depth documentaries that explore the odyssey of the making of the film and much more. Titanic will be presented in a brand new high definition transfer, 16x9 anamorphic edition, with 6.1 Dolby Digital Audio offering the highest level of picture and sound quality on DVD.

James Cameron commented: “The three year process of making TITANIC seemed at times as arduous as the building of the original ship itself. Until recently, I wasn’t really ready to dive back into it all and re-live the conflicts, disappointments, tough choices and, ultimately, the film’s crazy, unexpected success. This special edition is more than just the hour or so of unseen footage we’re including…we’re taking fans on an untold journey, one which could have ended just as disastrously as Titanic’s maiden voyage, and often seemed as if it would.”

“We’re very excited about the definitive TITANIC DVD that is certain to fulfill fans insatiable desire for the film,” said Rob Friedman, COO of Paramount Pictures and Vice Chairman of the Paramount Motion Picture Group. “The wealth of material that the collector’s edition will have available is truly representative of the scope and depth of this movie phenomenon and we believe it will drive audiences everywhere to return to TITANIC.”

“When TITANIC debuted in theaters, the film captured the attention of the world and has since become an unforgettable part of popular culture,” Jim Gianopulos, Chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment, said. “It is a privilege to once again be working with James Cameron and our partners at Paramount to launch the next course of TITANIC’S journey.”

;D I'd definitely go for the 4-disc collector's edition. So it's hammertime again. I guess after a decade of waiting, nobody would want just the 2-disc edition. I hope it's in DTS.

Very nice cover art.  I'll go for 4 disc set.  This is the R2 UK cover art.  R2 and R3 is under Fox while it's under Paramount in US.  Good thing I sold my copy years ago. :)

Paramount and 20th Century Fox announced its release date on October 2005! As for the exact date, it is yet to be announced. Although there would be a simultaneous release in the US and worldwide. Further details about the DVD are as follows:

1. Two releases of the DVD: 2-Disc Edition which has the "Director's Cut" of the movie and a 4-Disc Edition which had the identical 2-Disc Movie Edition and all the extras.

2. Like the LOTR Extended Edition, the film will be split into two for the highest possible video definition and audio quality.

3. The movie will be presented in anamorphic widescreen- the way it was intended to be seen!

4. It will include multiple audio commentary: from Cameron himself, the casts, and the crew.

5. The DVD will include 58 minutes of deleted scenes that won't be included back in the film. Instead, one would be able to know that a scene has been deleted via the icon that would appear on screen. One would have the option to jump out of the movie and see the deleted scenes.

6. The deleted scenes have an optional commentary from Cameron explaining why they were taken out.

7. The footages will not be shown in their raw aspect. They would have the same quality as that of the film itself.

8. The extra features would include almost 400 hours of behind-the-scenes footages.

9. There would be a newly-produced definitive feature-length documentary that would discuss the film from its conception till the end.

10. Interviews from the cast will also be included.

When asked why it took so long for this DVD, Cameron said that the released DVD is still sells well and that people who were involved in the film needed a long rest before they could revisit the work again.
