sonics can be subjective, what may sound good to others may sound bad to you. although the guys here can pick which amp sounds more dynamic, or natural or other sonical properties, the key is still to audition and decide which would be your choice.

meron DIY na cheap meron din DIY na expensive.  this will depend on the parts(premium/not premium)  that will be used.  it is best to determine your  budget for your ideal pang-rock na amp so you can narrow down your choices to what you might call "cheapest tube amps/entry level tube amps" and at the same time satisfy you.

i think the keyword here is "cheapest", now the question is if you'll like what a "cheapest" amp sounds like is again a subjective matter. in a DIY amp, you can make it as cheap as it gets and also as expensive too. choices of parts dictates the overall costs of a project, the cheaper the parts, the cheaper the overall cost will be.

once upon a time i was taught (and verified it in practice) that audio gears that have the designation of: entry level, mid-level, reference/flagship models share the same topological circuit design but differs mainly in the parts used, of course the reference models have the best parts.

this explains why an entry level amp shares the same circuit board as a reference amp has but with different parts and sometimes parts are omitted to simplify the circuit. this saves money on the design and parts cost but gives the audio company several offerings to the public with different budget levels.

Yup price will depend greatly on the parts to be used.  But please try to be very extra careful when people claim that the equipment that you'll buy or the parts to be used are quality parts and not "fake" nor the "el cheapo" ones that can easily be bought at raon.  But please do bear in mind that not all quality parts may have a very desirable end result. This also depends on what circuit it is to be used on or how the circuit is to be implemented.  Remember , you don't want to put in diesel on a gasoline engine.  ;)

how will i know if the parts use is premium and not premium? di ba mahirap malaman yun for the beginner? is the branded tube amp is using the so called premium parts?

Premium from not premium???????.............. Hmmmm............ Nice question.  First, you really need not be an expert on telling whether it is premium from not premium.  Try to research on the parts mentioned in this forum or from other forums. Ika nga nila "new words i learned".  Definitely there are many pics and articles available in the net regarding these parts, if you want i can post some.  Another thing, try to seek advice from other forum members, "technicians" or DIYers. There's no harm in trying to know different opinions, bro. Mahirap naman kung masyado kang maniniwala sa isang tao lang, diba.  ::)  ;)  Minsan ayaw pabuksan yung equipment para di ma-void yung warranty achuchuchu...... yun pala para di mo makita na fake or cheap parts pala ang nakalagay pero the price they're asking is for way beyond the price for premium parts.  Sometimes some sellers or technicians will even go to the extent of blurting out so much technical stuff or even inventing brands and part names (errrrrrrrrr....  >:( >:( >:( ) just to pull-it off.

is the branded tube amp is using the so called premium parts?

Nope not all branded tube amps use premium parts. Well, some or most of them use only standard or should i say ordinary parts. Why? Basically, it's really to cut down on production cost which in turn reduces "pass-on" costs to the market. In other words, para maibenta sa abot kayang halaga.  :)

you don't need to have an all parlor parts amp or preamp to have quality sound. how the part is used is in the circuit can account on the way it sounds.

or there are times when it is just psychological, knowing that you have the best parts that money can buy means that your gear sounds the best. wrong. check the design, if you don't know how, then listen to what sound it makes.

remember, little knowledge can be dangerous. for those who know nothing may feel astounded by the sound that parlor parts make on their gears.

my advice to you still is to listen.

btw, if you have friends who like using premium parts then by all means buy an amp with premium parts. otherwise magmumukhang kawawa naman ang gear mo kasi lahat ng kaibigan mo naka premium parts.  :D :D :D

but if you like the way an amp sounds as is even without premium parts then the hell with your friends.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

you see it all boils down to one thing... your ears.

My actual experience is with my foreplay preamp, i just recently replace the generic CROWN MKP caps which i usually use on prototype into Auricap (2.2uF/200V). The difference is big, more refined, detailed and tight on the bass region (yun nga lng, mahal ;D).

This is my personal experience with premium parts which others attested it many times.

Teka, parang SS and tube rectified PSU ah! ;D

mga sirs,

thanks vmuch will all your inputs. i'll just familiarized myself with the so called premium parts para alam ko at kung na satisfy naman ako sa not premium ok na yun. i just want to make sure na yung hard earned money ko is sulit and tama yung mga parts na nakalagay.

now, can you teach me how to identify those parts.

salamat sa inyo and more power :)

Eraser,

Tama lahat sila... don't believe with anybody saying na maganda parlor parts or maganda circuit kaya maganda sound.. minsan matching lang with IC, speaker cable or speaker mo iba na sound..

Important is maganda sound sa iyo!! ;D ;D  O0
