slightly OT...

i've recently discovered how expensive DVD+/-RW drives are here in the Philippines, even when compared to our South East Asian neighbors. i was recently in KL and i got a brand new 16x16 RW drive for half as much as 8x8 drives are selling over here. tsk. ::)

if you have options, have someone buy it elsewhere. trade-off is... the warranty.

i suggest u get a NEC writer, particularly the ND-3500A model
the Lite-on seems to be somewhat picky with media and there's a possibility u might get a problematic one
i don't know tho if this is available locally
but as wrAth suggested, if u know someone who could buy it elsewhere
u can get for less than P4500 in japan :)

Exactly. Better get in US if you relatives or friend. But if one considers the after sales support, wala kang magagawa but to settle dito sa Pinas ng dvd writer.

As for the brand...........I trust only lite-on for optical drives, ASUS is known for a lot of customer returns.

Heard that the ff are good:
- NEC 3500A
- Pioneer DVR-108 and DVR-109
- Have tried Toshiba/Samsung and so far it's ok.
- My friend has Lite-on and its been ok so far as well.

Happy hunting for a DVD Writer. If you can get a unit from abroad for half the price or at a bigger saving, and can have someone test the unit before bringing it here then go for it. At least if the drive fails you can still get another unit for the same amount of money you would have spent for here. You can also google for reviews of some of the drives being mentioned here.

aldrinpsx-  I am interested with the HP DVD writer with the Light scribe technology.  I was just wondering how it prints the data on your DVDs?  Do you have to buy the DVD-R's from HP to print the labels or any DVD-R would suffice?  Does it use ink or refills?

Hope you can answer my questions.  thanks!

It prints using the laser from the dvd writer itself.

You have to use DVD-R media capable  for lightscribe printing.

ANY DVR-R media  with lightscribe technology will do the trick.

It takes 20-25 mins to make a  single print.(full picture/background display).

Cost of the item.... $117 including local taxes.

peace!!!

aldrinpsx-  Thanks for the reply.  I think the HP DVD-R that can be printed with Light Scribe are kinda pricey.  BenQ also has drives which have this technology.  I am leaning on purchasing the said brand.  Seems to have good reviews.   ;D

that's a good drive :)  burns great and supports quality scans.  but if you're looking for a drive which also supports lightscribe, the BenQ 1625 might be a better choice.

btw, in addition to NEC drives, my other recommended drives would include those from BenQ and LG :)

BenQ so far is a good performer with the initial discs that I have made although I still have to master the softwares like the new Nero and DVD Shrink.

Although I was disappointed that according to the reviews, it can rip a 4.7GB DVD in 6 minutes.  Mine took nearly 20 minutes.  Maybe it is also dependent on the speed of your computer.  Mine is an Athlon XP 2000.

What's the speed of your blank disks? The disks used in the reviews were probably rated at 16x to maximize the speed of the drives. The 8x disks locally available can burn at anywhere from 6 to 8/9 minutes.

your drive might be in PIO mode.  to confirm it, load Nero's Infotool, go to the Configuration tab and check the assigned IDE channel of your drive.  if it's indeed in PIO mode (not DMA), you can change it back to DMA using this guide: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

Sir idlewild,

Many thanks for the link above. I was able to solve my PIO to DMA problem in my XP Pro setup at home. My DVD-writer is back in tiptop burning condition again! I've been searching the net and the Microsoft Knowledge base for this for quite sometime already. Thanks again!  ;D

always glad to help :)  this solution also works if you're experiencing buffer underruns when you burn.  check the IDE channels of both your writer and your hard disk if you experience slow transfer rates.
