I saw both Big Time and Pepot Artista today. I would have to agree with all the praises given for Big Time. On the other hand, Pepot Artista is too cutesy and juvenile for my tastes. I'll give my full thoughts when the festival's over.

I saw Big Time and Mansyon back to back a few days before the Cinemalaya officially started.

I laughed hard at Big Time and thought it was hugely entertaining but I thought Mansyon was the better film. Apples and oranges, probably. Besides  I was thinking maybe I'm just a bit biased because I know its director ,at least professionally.

Then it won. I guess I was right. ;D

Did you see Pepot Artista, X?

I don't know if I'm just weird or something, but I was squirming while everyone was laughing. It just didn't work for me and I had to conclude that they gave the Best Picture to the del Mundo coz he was the oldest and most established among the nominees, but seriously, the film is unoriginal and quite flat. The theme would've worked better as a documentary or something else, rather than what was Pepot Artista.

I haven't actually, oggs.

Admittedly, I was turned off a bit when I saw the feature on it. Didn't interest me much. I'll try catching it at UP ,though. If I can muster up any enthusiasm. But I might just take your word for it. :)

Pepot Artista

Doy del Mundo attempted a period film (`70s) through references to Guy and Pip and by using some 70s street slang, plus the bellbottom costumes. Most of the teens in the audience were laughing hard at the cutesie patootsie scenes. But somehow, I think, bumigay ang script towards the end. Nice attempt. Pero I think Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is the better film. IMHO.

Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival

What is there to look forward to in each of the six entries in this digital film festival? Read a little bit about each film below.

DILIM by Topel Lee
Action Thriller. Dilim is an enigmatic creature that roams the streets at night and does vigilante work, saving innocent victims by literally devouring the villans. Conflict ensues when a do-good policeman goes hot on his trail.
Cast: Rica Peralejo / Archie Adamos / Emilio Garcia / Mario Magallona / Hermie Concepcion

SA NORTH DIVERSION ROAD by Dennis Marasigan
Ten scenes, each one involving a man and a woman in a bantam car traveling northward along the North Diversion Road. The recurring theme: infidelity of the man.
Cast: John Arcilla and Ms. Irma Adlawan

SITAK by Liza Cornejo
Jack, a middle-aged guy, is fired from his human resources job of 20 years. This prompts to contemplate on suicide but he chances upon a taxi driver whose stories encourage him to get into the cab business and succumb to the probable dangers that come with it. Even if it means shame in the culture he belongs to, he will get what he desires, privacy. And hopefully, death.
Cast: Chanda Romero, Lou Veloso, Gerry Cornejo, Reno Romero and Jam Rodriguez

SANDALANG BAHAY by Mark Gary & Denisa Reyes
Is about the dramatic and sometimes humorous life and times of the Sandalang family. It's a film about facing the past and owning up to the truth that resides in the bleakest corner of the soul. This is seen in the interetwining lives of the 3 Sandalang sisters.
Cast: Albert Martinez / Ronnie Lazaro / Mads Nicolas / Nonie Buencamino / Hermie Concepcion / Gilleth Sandico / Sharmaine Buencamino / Adriana Agcaoili

ANAK NG TINAPA by Jon Red
Anak ng Tinapa is a story about small fish: framing-up and killing small fry instead of the big fish in a society ruled by sharks. Two crooked cops get a kick out of framing up hapless people by planting illegal drugs on them. Unknown to these rogue policemen, a group of loony and ambitious student filmmakers is watching and documenting their every move. In the end, a brutal killing spree of individuals occurs.
Cast: China Cojuangco / Ryan Eiganmann / Atong Redillas / Ting Medina / Soliman Cruz / Hector Macaso

ANG ANAK NI BROCKA by Sigfried Barros-Sanchez
Ang Anak Ni Brocka is a mockumentary. It is about a group of investigative journalists from a sub-par TV station who accidentally scores a scoop that a twenty-year old boy is looking around for his identity. What's very controversial about the boy's identity is that he claims to be the son of the late famous director Lino Brocka, a known gay filmmaker.
Cast: Nonie Buencamino, Roence Santos, Bombi Plata, Raul Morit, Adrian Ramirez, Raph Hernandez, Ronald Tupas and Soliman Cruz.
With special appearances by Gina Alajar, Bembol Roco, Joonee Gamboa, Christopher de Leon, Phillip Salvador.

I found Anak ni Brocka to be a thoroughly interesting, enjoyable, and well made "mockumentary" until delays beset the latter part of the screening and we never got to finish the film.

The Mowelfund Film Institute, which has produced the likes of Raymond Red and Lav Diaz, is coming to a close after 25 years of existance. Instead of teaching film and conducting workshops, they'll now focus their efforts on the Museum.

Sa North Diversion Road
Unfortunately I've never seen Tony Perez's Sa North Diversion Road onstage, but it's easy to see why this is a perennial theater favorite, constantly being restaged: it's the story of ten couples, of different social classes, occupations, and temperaments, driving at different times down the same road, dealing with the man's infidelity to the woman. The metaphors are obvious--life is a long road, taken by different people as differing experiences, with different destinations along the way; the pleasure in this piece is in the actual execution, a dramatic tour de force for two actors as they play ten different people in ten different emotional tones.

Easily the best thing about Dennis Marasigan's adaptation of the play is just that: it adapts the play, making changes where necessary to exploit the medium of film. Flashback sequences are inserted when necessary, mostly in the beginning of the picture, to ease us from the usual film narrative to the more radical one of the play (funny how narrative theater, with its spatial and temporal restrictions, seems on the whole more adventurous than narrative cinema when it comes to plot structure). On a tiny budget he achieves a variety of lighting schemes and music to accompany each story, from an austere darkness and stark piano score (indicating Ingmar Bergman angst) to a bright and sunny farce, the characters' thick  Bulacena accents providing the rhythm and melody. There's a silent slapstick interlude (one of the film's comic highlights), a '70s Bohemian laugh-a-thon, even a science-fiction-y segment, with two intellectuals decked out in stark white (a nod to THX 1138?) literally overanalyzing their relationship to death.

Marasigan rises to the Hitchcockian challenge of spending almost the whole ninety minutes in a car's confined space, and still making it visually interesting--he gives us a variety of angles and cuts fluidly and interestingly to differing beats (from languid long shots to nervous quick cuts), depending on the story he's telling. He keeps the different storylines clear and distinct where it could all easily become confusing.

But the glory of the film is his work with the actors, and the performances they give. The film is a true duet, with John Arcilla and Irma Adlawan (Marasigan's wife) as the ten troubled couples, and where Marasigan supports them with lighting and music and costumes and the occasional prop (a hilariously ubiquitous bag of watermelon seeds, for example, which seem to transcend social class and background), most of the work and effects are created through the actors.

This may be mainly bias, but with the exception of a few segments, it seems to me Adlawan's character sets the tone and carries most of the picture. She either dominates the scene or is Arcilla's equal, and as we run through the different stories, a composite or collage impression of her character emerges--sarcastic, witty, furious, tender and ultimately heartbreaking, the different characters merge to give us the bewildering, ever-changing complexity of the human soul.

Arcilla gives support, but this is no small thing; I've never thought 'supporting performance' ever meant the performance was inferior, or less crucial, only that in the story's structure it's nominally subordinate. He keeps up with Adlawan's bewildering cornocupia of characters, matching her every change of mood, no easy feat. When he's given his own aria--the devastated husband dealing with his mentally incapacitated wife--he's simple, direct, moving. One of the best films, Filipino or otherwise, I've seen this year.
