House of Flying Daggers R3
« on: Feb 16, 2005 at 11:03 PM »
I just saw this title tonight at Astroplus Podium selling at P595 only which i think is a nice starting price for a very very good movie.  :)
although personally i'd still go for the R1 release which has the English Audio.  ;)

ei.. great news.. who's releasing this title locally?

ranran, you might want to rethink your R1 preference.  most asian films released in R1 are re-edited and modified including Hero, Shaolin Soccer, Farewell My Concubine, etc..

:)

Warner Brothers is releasing this locally. Although the printing doesn't look at par with the other Warner releases.

Don't count on it! I haven't encountered a Warner-released DVD with DTS track in it. But this will change once The Exorcist The Beginning is released (R1 has DTS track, sana dito rin meron).

for HOFD, some "violent scenes", which i dont think there are IMO, were deleted during its theater run. you may check the international forums for details.

cant tell personally since i seldom watch the theatrical cuts of the dvds i own.. except for Kill Bill and LOTR series.

:)

actually parang wala masyadong impact ang cover art nitong local R3 version.  :(
siguro that's why they priced it at P595  ;D

Yeah it is. But Warner Brothers is the one that's distributing it.

Ain't Php 595 pricey for the DVD?  Haven't really made up my mind in buying this one.  Any reviews?  Thanks.

for a new release ok lang i guess.  the movie itself is ok, and the DVD features aren't much, i'm really holding out to get a R1 release of this title.  :)

House Of Flying Daggers - R3 released by EDKO Films (Hongkong) through Warner Music Phils. (WMP). Single disc...no insert. Became curious when I saw the EDKO logo at the back artcover so I decided to buy it while waiting for my Korean LE version. This is similar to the one disc released of EDKO containing the original Mandarin DTS 5.1 soundtrack in full bitrate and DD 5.1. Looking at the back of the disc itself, you can see the EDKO logo in the middle. In the "echo game" (scene with the drums), bitrate reached as high as 10.5mbps. You can listen to the soundtrack in DTS ES 6.1 matrix if your av receiver has this feature. Traditional chinese and english subtitles. English subtitles are grammatically correct. Special Features consists of the theatrical trailer, cast & crew filmographies and photo gallery. Contains 119 mins. of the film without cuts. 2.35:1 anamorphic. Picture quality is great IMHO but I can't really compare coz I have not seen any other versions. But the soundtrack rocks!!! If you just want to watch the movie without paying for an expensive packaging...this is definitely a best buy at P595 8).

aeris, thanks for the update.

from reviews made by consumers, the single disc Edko release is the initial release and considered not a good release at all. not so clear PQ and SQ.

the Philippine transfer could have been lifted from the the current 2 disc HK Release which in my opinion is the best release ever PQ/SQ wise. if that's the case, we got the best local release (so far) without spending too much..

anyhow, the cover art is the poster art used in cinemas abroad. you may also check the HOFD Korean LE for a bigger fold out material similar to the cover of the local release.

Sir hem,

I was able to check the comparisons of HOFD at dvdcompare and dvdbeaver...the Phil. transfer has the same menu screens as that of the single disc EDKO initially released. On second viewing I noticed some artifacts. SQ still can give your ht system a good workout...

Will check my HOFD Korean LE when it arrives...it was only shipped today by jsdvd. Thanks :)

I have the R3 DTS-ES 2-disk version of HOFD which my sister bought from HK.

BUT, they recently also released a HVD version of this & Hero. HVD version is 1080i resolution but only single disk & DD.

My friend has the HVD version when we both bought a GIEC HVD player last month. It was the free DVD provided.

Grabe! Soooper Linaaaaw!!!  :o :o :o

HVD version only available in HK/China, as of what I was told.

i have seen the R1 release of HOFD and it's the clearest and the best transfer i have seen so far.

korean and hk releases simply can't compete side by side. but hold your horses, this is a strong candidate for an upcoming superbit release.

the R1 may not have the DTS track but it has French and English audio and commentary from the director and the Zhang Ziyi. R1 is also packed with special features.

I also heard that the video quality of the R3 is not as good as the R1. So if you think that the DTS outweighs the numerous special features then the R3 may be a good buy.

I was planning to buy the R1 version but when I saw this at P299 this morning, I just had to pick it up.  The quality of this version is actually pretty good.  When I played it on my PC, the average Mbps is 6.79 Mbps.  That's Superbit quality.  The disc is filled to the max, it's 7.57 gigs even though the extra features are minimal (trailers, photo gallery, actors filmography).  Audio is DTS 5.1.
