staple (staple gun=P250) it to a wooden frame.

anyone tried cutting a manual pull down screen and transferring it to a fixed frame?  any suggestions on how to do this?

I attached mine in a plywood by stapling it. It is easier to detach. ;)

What material do you usually use for the black borders?

mostly say black velveteen fabric is the best for unwanted spills of light coming from the pj.

I used black felt paper  ;)

My DIY screen is 8'x4'.. in the beginning the experience and thrill of watching in a very big screen is wonderful. But after sometime, we all agreed to reduce it down to about 2.5'w x  5'.. its better for the eyes and the picture looks sharper ;D

I agree with you bro!  I've learned that even if your pj can project such a large display at a short distance, somehow in this aspect I tend to disagree that bigger is better.  You still have to consider your viewing distance.  Remember in movie theaters that the front seat is the worst seat.  You have the biggest screen in front of you but your vision is just limited to the center missing out details on the sides.

I started measuring the maximum screen size that my front wall can accomodate but somehow 80" diagonal is too big for my 9 feet viewing distance.  Baka sumakit lang ulo ko sa laki.  So I am now settling for a 75" diagonal 16:9 DIY screen.   ;D

screen size x 1.4 = ideal viewing distance (formula ive often seen in avsforum).

so your 75 inches is just right for your viewing distance of 108 inches (9ft).   :)

Sir, based on your formula, 80 inches is still ok.  80" x 1.4= 112" or 9.333 feet.

I thought all the while viewing distance is 2.5x diagonal screensize (?)

with an 8'x4' plywood screen and an adjustable black border also made of plywood covered with felt paper measurements ideal or not is no longer my concern  ;D adjustment is so easy with the ax100. For demo purposes, my son set it the biggest projection possible so he is always happy listening to all the complements from his classmates. hehehe but for serious viewing the size is significantly reduced. Also the audio level goes with the size of the screen.

With the way fixed framed screens are priced, I decided to go the DIY route (or let the carpenter do it route).  Ive already purchased a screen material from ebay, and prepared the necessary materials.   kiln dried wood 1x4 and black velvet fabric.  im planning to have a 104inch 16x9 screen.    :)

Did also a DIY 80" 16:9 screen using blackout cloth stapled on plywood w/ additional bracings at the back. I used black duct tape for the borders. Total cost P1200.

medyo napa mahal sa akin, nag import kasi ako ng screen material from ebay. Gain 1.2, 104in diagonal.  wala pa 5k cost, but im pretty satisfied with the way screen was built.   Carada fixed frame will cost around 25-30k same size.... ;D ;D

Well if you can get the same quality for a fraction of the cost of the commercial one, why not?.  Making DIY projection screens are more practical and flexible that would suit your exact measurements. Not all rooms have the same size, configuration and viewing distances.

I'm happy with my new screen. Will post pics later....

Nice job marv and nerveblocker ;) If you have a dedicated viewing area, its really advisable to make fix screen kasi wala creases unlike the roll up type na over time will develop waves sa screen. Although hindi halata while viewing still its bothersome pa din :( mahal pa :( :(

Yup blackout cloth (P240/yard) from Shell Canvas as per recommendation of our screen DIY'ers here.  The whole assembly isn't as heavy as it seems.   I  used an inverted "u"  type of hook, the ones they use in picture frames or plaques only at the top corners and just drilled 2 screws in the wall.  No need for support at the bottom of the screen.

I was just wondering how to clean the screen if it gets dirty thru time.  :-\

just search for projector screen material, wala kasi brand, though they have a website, http://www.buildyourownprojectionscreen.com/ .  The good thing, the screen material will be shipped rolled, not folded.   ;)

yep.  around 3k shipped yung screen material.   and another 2k for labor and other materials (kiln fried wood, velvet fabric).  The screen can be cleaned with mild soap and water.   the catch, diko pa ma judge performance, dahil matgal tagal pa bago ko magagamit...  :)

marsman, nice adjustment ginawa mo.  did it improve the viewing experience compared to when it was higher?
