KEF Q series speakers
« on: Sep 22, 2002 at 03:19 PM »
Hi,
It seems there is still no topic for these speakers so I'm going to start one.

I had a chance to listen to these speakers and found their sound to be very good. Detailed highs and mids, and bass was tight and controlled.

Is anyone using these speakers? Can you give some more comments. Where can i get price quotes for this speakers.

Thanks.

All the benefits of the latest Q Series in a compact speaker with the power to fill the room with big sounds. With KEF's new generation 19mm (3/4") metal dome tweeter at its acoustic centre, the same UNI-Q® bass/midrange driver array as the floorstanding models reproduces the frequency spectrum with virtually no crossover effects. A powerful magnet system and refined crossover design improve power handling and response even further. Like all models in the range, this makes Q1 very easy to place in the room; it performs equally well on a shelf or stand-mounted. Genuine performance - and great value.

For detailed specs, please log-in to http://www.kef.com/products/qseries/qseries1.html

The Q1's are rated equally as the Mission 780's and better than B&W 602 S3 in both sound and compatibility. Check-out What Hi Fi? April issue. It is retailing in the U.K. at 250 sterling pounds.

I look forward to auditioning these upcoming KEF performers.

Thanks cybermms. The KEF Qs are really worth a listen if you are already considering the B&W 600 series. Here in HK, the Q1s are also significantly cheaper than the 602s.

I just find that the surround Q8s looks are rather uninspiring. Specially when compared to the others in the Q series. The surrounds are like cheap radio transistor speakers. I haven't heard them yet though...

I was told that the KEF Qs are already made in China...

The KEF website does not list any distributor in the Phil.

a couple of weeks ago i was scouting for av stores that sells or distributes celestion speakers and i came to this shop at park square1 (i forgot the name but it is right across true value)  that sells kef speakers (it caught my attention since i know kef and celestion recently merge, actually, celestion bought kef).

the Q1 was on sale for 15k from  its original price of 19,999. actually, all the Q series were on sale daw. though i wasnt able to audition it, i did ask the sales person there his personal assessment on the speaker. he said, as compared to speakers of the same price range it is the best daw, better than B&W and MS..... O0

That shop must be Sound Dimension.  I think they're the only ones selling this brand, at least in that area.  The Q series, especially the one displayed last Christmas, the Q7 floorstanders,  impressed me the most.  Thier co-incidental tweeter and woofer design (no relation to the Coincident brand of speakers) is said to have many technical features superior to ordinary 2 way speakers with a separately voiced tweeter and woofer.

As i read in their website, they uses Uni-Q Technology that has emphasis on listening pleasure or the so-called "sweet spot". I myself has observed that feature in my Q10 speaker.

If the Q1 is a lot better than the MS 912, then for all its worth, I should sell my 914s and get the Q1 instead...  ::)  :o

Looks like there's no Q3 in their current model line-up.  After Q1 it's Q4.  There's a Q2ds but it doesn't seem to proceed logically from the series.

maybe not a whole lot better.  But just by reading the technical write-ups on the KEF, there is some reason to expect the Q series to be better sounding and a logical upgrade path from the MS.  Just an expectation.

When I last heard a floorstanding Q7 at Sound DImension last year, I was easily floored at the spaciousness of the detailing I didn't recall getting from my MS914.  But I wasn't sure if that was due to the KEF speakers or the Rotel set-up to which they were connected. (at that time I was still using Onkyo amps)  Right there and then I resolved to save up and upgrade my first MS914 set to those KEF Q7.  (Succeeding circumstances, however, would lead me to get another set of MS914 to complete an all MS set-up. )  But now with the Acurus amp, I am getting spacious detailing but not as I recall getting it from the Q7.  Could be the difference in room accoustics.    (I may just be rationalizing so as not to upgrade to KEF  ;D)

i agree, seems kef have no intention of following the product model numberings of there previuos Q model series.  and in quite a very illogical manner if i may say.

"Wala bang Q3 or something.... like sa MA walang B3...?"

YES there is guys! there's Q1, Q3, Q5, Q7

Q1 - is their baby speaker, bookshelf
Q3, Q5 and Q7 are floorstanders (Q5 and Q7 having extra drive units)

Q3 is like a b&w 602.5 in their series

Q9c - is their center

Q8s - in wall speakers

for kef speakers (q series) they have better frequency response and sensitivies than b&ws, better soundstaging some say.  i was going to buy the q1 last year but opted for the b&w instead to match my 602s. we tested them in sound dimension and i must agree with better soundstaging esp. for center (q9c).

cheers

sound dimension park square

my observation only, these speakers didn't pick up well here in the phils.  most audio enthusiasts here are still stuck with ms, ma, wharfs and b&ws as their options.  this is brit made speaker and i think it has similar design with b&ws.  you can read their reviews in hu fi choice uk (esp. q1)

for q series yes it's different, the tweeters are placed in the middle of woofers. but you'll notice that their reference series the tweeters are located on top just like the signature series of b&w.  in terms of design itself, the cabinet is made out of curved enclosures.

There is a lot more to speaker design than drive placements and cabinet configurations.

When i was auditioning speakers, i found the Kef's Q1 to be in the same league as the B&W 601. But it eventually came down to preference in the way the speaker sounds...and the Q1s being made in China. I went for the 601s.

just my 1 peso.

Hi,
I am a proud owner of KEF Q1 and Q9c. My surrounds are Kef Cresta 2.

I am blown away when I first heard these babies in a store. They were driven by NAD T752 then. Bass, detail, spaciousness and sweet spot made me decide to get these.

Below are the list of speakers I considered/auditioned before deciding.
Mission 780se
Monitor Audio Bronze B2
Aegis Evo 2
B&W 602 S3
