got this dvd player from abensons as a replacement for my old 727K which conked out after 1.5 years of used.. luckily i got their extended warranty deal..

Wow - how much was the extended warranty and for how long? If it breaks down again after a year, will they give another new one?

Also, any confirmation on the discounted price? Someone posted that the 5500S is now selling at Php4,200. That's a great price considering it can play SACDs and enhance ordinary audio CDs.

I think that price is for the 5100s

But if the 5500s really is Php4,200 it may be time for me to upgrade.

My mistake uvax-- Php4,200 is the price of the 5100. Based on the specs, it's essentially a 5500 without the SACD support.

The 5100 looks interesting. If only the SACD capability is missing and it retains and it retains the divx capabilities of the 5500 (which includes OGG), it may be a better alternative to the LG DK9934.  I'm a bit put off though by the slot loading technique.

Questions to DVD/DivX Gurus:

is SACD really that popular/useful currently or is something like to prepare yourself for the "future"?

Any other DVD/DivX player brands that is cheaper than the 5500 but is similar or even better than Philips 5500?

The 5100 looks interesting. I'm a bit put off though by the slot loading technique.

Slot loading?! Never had a good experience with slot loading players. In my iMac for example, slightly warped discs would get stuck inside the DVD-ROM player regularly and they'd be a pain to remove. Plus the mechanism is sensitive so after a couple of years of heavy use, it had problems ejecting discs properly  so I had to start "helping" it by gently pulling the disc as the drive was spitting it out.

I'll check out the Pioneer DV-383 which looks like a pretty durable machine with the same specs.

@kenzo823 SACD and DVD Audio are only important if you're an audio enthusiast and intend to buy the discs which are pricier than regular CDs. Selections are also limited at this point. If you have a good HT setup, both formats kick ass but I doubt either will replace regular CDs in store shelves anytime soon.

According to www.divxtest.com this player has the best compatibility with most of the divx formats.

I bought a Philips DVP 5500s in May of this year. Ok naman sya sa movie at sa audio except that medyo mabagal sya magbasa unlike my other player (Philips 727k) na mabilis magbasa at di masyado namimili. Unfortunately, before October ended, DVP 5500s stopped reading any disks. I immediately brought the unit to an authorized service center of Philips, at nag-umpisa na ang aking problema. For almost a month, halos every other day ay pina-follow up ko kung ok na ang player ko and the reply of the service center was always "hinihintay pa po namin yung replacement lens". Then one day when i again followed it up, medyo bago na ang tono ng service center, accordingly ay talaga daw wala pang stock ang Philips ng lens para sa 5500, so willing daw ang Philips na i-replace na ang unit ko. Wow! Salamat sabi ko at mapapalitan pa ng bago ang player ko. Unfortunately again, so far, malapit na ang Pasko, wala pa rin ang kapalit. I'm beginning to get mad already. Sana hindi nyo pa nararanasan ang experience ko with Philips.

Philips 5500s at MAKRO is only 4990.00.

I choose Philips 5500 anytime, may SACD pa but wala ang MIC in.

My unit malfunctioned when the yaya tried to use it in the morning. I just used it for only 10 mins last night. I returned it to Abenson and they replaced it with a new unit. According to them its the first time they encountered a problem with the 5500. The LCD and the front panel is not working. Im testing the replacement unit and so far so good. Lets see if it will malfunction again tom after leaving it in stanby mode like the first unit. I hope its just a lemon unit and this time it wont happen again. I seem to like the features of the 5500.

Confirmed - DVP5500s is P4990 sa Makro - enough to pay for free membership :-)

Which to get: 642 or 5500s? Pros and Cons of each? Differences?

642K has S-Video out and TosLink and Mic+Karaoke support but no SACD

5500s has improved menu structure, 5.1ch audio out, and better DiVX implementation

Some DVP-5500s/69 remote codes you may want to keep for future reference

Servo 23.62.59.00
RISC 05.00.04.02
DSP 03.59.02.14
Region Code 0

• POWER ON the set.
• Open the tray
• Press key 5, 5  The expected firmware upgrade file name will be displayed on the TV Screen.

Got this just yesterday, i'm not planning to buy dough.. but i suprise by the 6 months 0% and guess what? it has a FREE PHILIPS AX-2400 discman for only PHP 5,990.. all the audition i made was great and all the disc that i bring which i record from DVD-R+/RW-, CD-R/RW, Pirated VCD/DVD's, movies like DivX v3,4,5,6, Jpeg, WMA, MP3 PLAYS smoothly! SPECS: SACD 5.1 out, DOLBY PROLOGIC II, DVD-R+/RW-, and it has DTS decoder that i like most that i compare to Pioneer DV-585k that has none.. the only thing is PHILIPS 5500s/69 is not a karaoke player.. and the setup menu is most likely to be control on the remote.. But all in all its a good bye.. :)

So if your planning to have buy @ WESTERN Appliances at farmers, not the one when your coming from MRT cubao station, it on the OTHER side malapit sa palengke, LOOK for JULIUS of PHILIPS salesman, and what more? if offered it to be REGION FREE configuration for FREE..  So what are you waiting for.. BUY NA!!! ;D

Sirs,
Need help please. I have this Philips DVP5500s which is supposed to play SACDs.
Then i had a Chesky SACD multi-channel hybrid recording (Chuck Mangione)
which i was quite happy listening to on the DVP5500s. This was until i bought
another multi-channel hybrid recording of Spyro Gyra (Heads Up label - a division of Telarc)
that was treated by the player as AudioCD, no multi-channel, no SACD icon displayed on
video whatsoever. I returned the CD hoping it was fake and be exchanged by the store.
They did and i picked a different label Multi-Channel Hybrid SACD recording (Pentatone Classics label)
just to make sure. To my disappointment the same thing happened, no video display of SACD icon,
no multi-channel, just plain stereo AudioCD. This does not happen everytime i play the
Chesky labeled SACD i mentioned earlier though i'm now having doubts with
the Philips DVP5500s.

There are 3 ways in playing a Hybrid SACD. READ THE MANUAL.

Be sure to set your SACD player to read the SACD layer.

My Pioneer has 3 set-up: CD layer, SACD Stereo layer and MultiChannel SACD layer.

Be sure to set to SACD Stereo layer or MultiChannel SACD layer.

You probably had  mistakenly hit the audio button at the rostal end of your remote, since it will revert to 2 channel stereo and disable the SACD multichannel.
Another way to check it,  is by going to the audio setup menu, and setting the analog audio function to "multichannel", of course, I surmise that youv'e read your manual and had previously set up your system for both SACD and Digital.

Thanks Sir Alfie. I'll have to check it again.
I was just wondering, bakit yung Chesky labelled hybrid walang problema? Pag salang nung CD lumalabas
yung 2 folder icons you can select from:
•Multi-channel
•Stereo
Then below are SACD logos for each track. By the way, Multi-channel layer has
priority over Stereo on the Philips DVP5500s kaya unless i select Stereo it will play on multichannel mode.
Pero yung 2 other labels i mentioned were also multichannel hybrids pero walang lumalabas na icons.
Anyway, i-check ko uli as you said. Hirap maging bagito sa SACD :(
Thanks ulit sir.

You've got me confused, are you saying that the player has a built-in DTS Decoder? Or just the usual DTS Digital Output?
