James Dean Collection
« on: May 02, 2005 at 11:26 PM »
Seeing that Rebel without a Cause SE and East of Eden SE will be released locally. Will warner also release the James Dean Collection boxset?

Any thoughts on this one. How much will these DVDs cost? and will these be sold both with slipcase and no slipcase as the R1 is?

Thanks.  :)

The James Dean box set will not be released in Region 3 this year, unfortunately. Warner said they'd forward the release details within the week, but it looks like these will be priced in the P695 to P895 SE range.

Yes, The James Dean Collection Region 3 boxset has been confirmed. Here's a snippet from the press release:

On May 31, Warner Home Video will celebrate the iconic film star James Dean with the release for the first time ever of his complete motion picture legacy.  A DVD Box Set will include East of Eden (available for the first time on DVD), Rebel Without a Cause (new two-disc Special Edition) and Giant (two-disc DVD Special Edition).

The DVDs are filled with special features, including new documentaries, commentaries, deleted scenes, Behind the Scenes segments, screen tests and more.

Details on the PinoyDVD front page next week.

Slight delay on the James Dean box set and individual title releases. Instead of May 31, it should be in stores 1st week of June. Final retail for the 3 film (6-disc) collection is Php2,100.

I bought mine three weeks ago from Astro Glorietta. I don't know if they still have stocks. Try Astro Waltermart. They have lots of special edition Warner DVD's in slipcases there.

i have seen huge posters of James Dean in Astro branches... but they seem to lack the merchandise. so far, East of Eden is the only Dean movie ive seen. even the oh-so widely spread Giant DVD is also missing in action.

Has anybody seen the box set in any astro shelves?

I spoke with Darius of Warner today, and he says that although the discs are in the country already, the delay is with the ratings board. All new releases should have the Avidphil hologram sticker with rating daw, and they haven't finished with the James Dean films yet.

Sheesh.

You're welcome.  :)

What makes this annoying is the discs arrived the same time yata as "Constantine," so that's what... a two-week delay so you can rate two classic films that obviously have a P rating at worst?

weird ..

as a big business entity and a multinational firm, i believe this is not a new routine for them. i would appreciate if they integrate clearances in their sched so as not to cause standard delays.

but don't get me wrong.. i appreciate honesty... at least a good thing going for them.

You'd be surprised. All the distributors are complaining about Customs now because of the excessive red tape and increased fees. The government also added an extra step for clearance: the ratings board. So everybody has to get in line and prioritize their titles. As a result, the distribs seem unwilling to commit to release dates anymore because you "can't rush the government."

After Darius mentioned the sticker/ratings issue, I noticed something when looking at the new releases on the shelves, though: While the new VIVA and Warner releases all had the ratings stickers on them, the Magnavision titles... didn't. Made me wonder why... lagay or disregard for new policies?

firewired, suggest ka naman na TAYO na lang mag-rate ng mga titles, to save the government some time... and MONEY, since we'll do it fast and just for the price of one free "preview DVD" for us to evaluate...  ;D

firewired, i believe the rating policy is not congruent to the anti-piracy initiatives of the philippine government. anyhow..  but, whether it's a policy enforced by the World Bank, or some know-it-all legislator, this shouldn't be a reason to deter delivery of commitments to the consumers.  integration of 2-3 weeks in the timeline is simple.

i still believe that a system could be created and thought of in order to meet published release dates of local DVDs. distributors, for eaxmple,  could organize and fund an independent Ratings Regulatory Board to manage time and redundancy of functions (as i assume these DVDS have been rated elsewhere). this way, they would be held responsible for approvals and at the same time  contribute for the betterment of the industry.

i strongly believe that excessive red tapes are not new. increased fees are inevitable.  the distributors should have seen these coming and managed the matters the best way they know how.

in a nutshell, these distributors should build more flexibility and brainstorm on solutions rather than giving up and pulling everything from a "canned" source.

saw the box xet at astro megamall and astro sm north edsa. 2,100 pesos. naka-keep case ang 3 dvds inside the box.

saw the special edition of east of eden, rebel and giant sa astro sm fairview. each set is in cardboard slipcase (the typical special edition set by warners like singin in the rain, philadelphia story, casablanca, etc.)

even the oh-so widely spread Giant DVD is also missing in action.

You can buy Giant at Astrovision Greenhills, it's in-stock there.

I bought the boxed set today for Php 2100. I think what's worth noting is the original R3 release of Giant was a 2-disc set, a flipper for the movie and a separate disc for the features. It also came with a slipcase in digipak casing with images and chapter stops on the interior.

The new Giant included in the boxed set is a 3-disc set in an Amaray case with a swing-type disc holder for the first two discs, which hold the movie (instead of a flipper). There are no inserts, so you don't have the pictures nor the extensive listing of chapter stops for the film/featurettes.

I'm not sure they have it, but have you tried Tower Records?

Tower in Quezon Avenue has so many copies of the boxed set lying around, so maybe the Tower as a whole has a lot of stocks...
