Asian DVDs
« on: May 01, 2002 at 02:22 PM »
Hi,

Starting today, I'll be filling up this thread with Asian DVDs that I have purchased and wish to share with you my findings on the disc's details

Highly appreciate if you share your thoughts as well or better if you also share the details of your Asian DVD!

Note: Filipino DVDs are also Asian DVDs however there are already a separate message boards for this therefore this thread would mostly dealt with our neighboring Asian Countries

An option for English Dubbing (If you like cheesy kung-fu dubbing this feature is highly recommended)

My Short Comment on the Film:

If you love blood and guts this is the film. If you like calssic English dubbed style Kung Fu, this is the one. I fyou like out of this world action, this is the one. If you like Cynthia Luster playing a male role, this is the one. If you like an Asian DVD film with jam packed features, this is the One!!

Note:

You can only view the extended version of Shaolin Soccer if you select the white shoalin icon which appears on the right upper corner of the screen (3 times during the movie).

-The first extended scene is at 16'27 from the beggining (Sing/Chow Sing-Chi dance in front of the Mui/Vicki Zhao Store with other people like Michael Jackson in ''Thriller'' / running time : 3'14).

-The Second extended Scene is at 1H07'12 from the beggining (Sing introduces Mui to his friends & Mui fights with her Lady boss like Neo in ''Matrix'' without looking at her / running time 6'46).

-The third extended scene is the same NG Scene of the Special Features but with optionals subtitles (english or chinese simplified/traditionnal).

Highly recommended to get NOW while it is still on stock. HKFLIX.com already pulled out their DVD for this as they were banned by Disney to sell this. The reason behind it was ther would an upcoming rated,US relase with the changed title of "Kun-Fu Soccer"

Thanks for the suggestion. But as far as the reviews of the film  is concern, I guess I would leave that to our neighboring Thread which is the Film and TV Talk.

Nice one, xage! I'm also getting into Asian movie DVDs. I got few DVDs but it's not worth mentioning for some reasons. ;) I bought them all from Ebay. And I'm still in the process of asking some chinese friend if they could help me find DVD stores locally.
Anyway, I do like to have some of titles you mentioned above. But, I'm stuck with R1 code. Cannot play those R3 disc. Waaah!!!!  :(  I think, I'll just wait for them to release R0.

BTW, how much did you pay for "Shaolin Soccer"?

Still waiting for my Korean DVDs. Will share some infos later.

Keep 'em coming!

Yo, Xage!
Id like to say that Battle Royale rocks!!!
I got my copy from downtown and ive watched it two times na. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
I also have a DVd( although bootleg ) of the RING 2. From Tartan sya. Nakaka-takot talaga itong Ring series( theres Ring, Ring2 at Ring 0, if memory serves me right )
Meron ka ba nitong Ring series in DVD? Gusto kong kumpletuhin.
By the way, OK ba yung Shaolin Soccer? Theyre gonna show it in Star Mandarin( Destiny ) and it looks funny.
Ok nga pala itong thread mo about Asian DVDs. Keep on posting your collection, dude!

This thread is a great idea, xage!  We need a balance between hollywood films and Asian films, the latter of which I personally feel, hits closer to home anyway.

SiCkBoY - you can also try rottentomatoes for film reviews. They link a lot of reviews, I just checked The Debut and it's there.

My Short Comment on the Film:

If you love Jackie Chan Films, then this is a must for your collection. As you may know this is the final collaboration of the three dragons: Sammo Hung,Yuen Biao and Jackie Chan where they also fought among each other (Nice Stunts and Martial Arts).

Not only that, you would also see an excellent fight sequence and rematch (Since Wheels on Meals) between Jackie Chan and Benny "The Jet" Uruquedez (The Redford-White look alike)

Good Luck Blade!

Since you'll be getting Asian DVDs and as I noticed you are a Blade fan. I suggest try checking out some of Donnie Yen's (the Asian guy in Blade II) DVD films like Once upon in China 2 where he fought against non-other than another asian sensation, Jet Li.

Yes, I suggest if you intend to buy, try getting the newly released double disc DVD with DTS sound and Unrated. The recent one (Which I have) is a single disc with DD 5.1 sound only but descent enought to be a jam packed DVD.

As far as the film itself, here are my few comments:

1. A great follow-up to Storm-Riders. Since this was also based on a popular comic in HK

2. The center of the film deals with Hero Hua (played by Ekin Cheng) and his adventure from China to US

3. Action Sequence is great especailly the Statue of Liberty final Confrontation (If you have played Metal Gear Solid 2 , I guess that game got the swordfight idea on this Film). Ninjas,Samurai,Fantasy and swordsplay all in here.

4. Special Effects, well it doesnt get any better if is not made by Centro Digital (The team that made the special effects in Shaolin Soccer and Storm Riders)

I hope this answer your inquiry.

just watched storm riders and audition. storm riders is a good action and fantasy martial arts movie updated with cgi technology. Audition, on the otherhand, like basic instinct and sixth sense, is at it's best, experienced without any pretense and prior knowledge. for a kid who grew up watching italian zombie, cannibal and gore films, this one left me squeamish. this is what hollywood should be doing with horror films. less gore but more on foreboding and development. don't miss it.
