DVD/BD Collector's Code
« on: Jan 22, 2010 at 07:40 PM »
Guys, have you ever come up with some sort of code or rules for us collectors?  Tipong mga unwritten rules that we follow as serious collectors.  For one thing, madamot man kung iisipin, we don't lend our precious DVDs/BDs, hindi ba, lalo na sa mga hindi mo mapagkakatiwalaang iha-handle sila ng maigi.

When I posted my collection on Facebook, there were some who started saying "Pahiram!" Of course, I ignored them.

Some friends who know me, though, that I'm a serious collector who just say na pakopya sila ng certain title.  Hindi talaga nag-o-overstep ng boundaries of borrowing the discs themselves.

Gawa nga tayo ng ating unwritten codes dito, then let's sum them all up. Given that, di rin siya magiging unwritten. Hehehe. ;D

So, number one rule, thou shalt not lend your DVDs/BDs (to [just] anyone).
Absolutely no regrets!

You're the owner of the precious collection so they have to follow your rules. ;)

I got many times the same question from my colleagues & also relatives but I'd tell them straight "Sorry no borrow but feel free to drop by my house to watch it" It's a nice sincere offer but generally they will certainly not take all the trouble just to watch it at my house. :)

In my case, yung mga dvds ko, wala na akong nagagawa kung hindi ipahiram ko sa kaibigan ko. Nahihiya kasi akong tumanggi. :)

I lent a DVD (which I purchased at full price of P895) to my brother-in-law. It has now been more than 4 years since then & up to today, he has not returned it yet. When I last requested my wife to ask him for it, he said he has not even viewed the film yet!!!! :-X

BTW, with regards to lending of DVDs, I believe there is already an existing thread on this....

Good thing he hasn't forgot about it or worst case: he denies the DVD was lent to him. ;D

To get back OT... here are some of my "codes" (aside from the no lending rule):

1.  Original shrinkwrap must be intact even after I open the DVD/BD.  I make sure to cut it carefully using a blade in such a way that I could slip it back over the dvd/bd case.

2. If I couldn't follow #1 and the shrinkwrap gets torn, then I make sure to put the dvd/bd in a resealable plastic bag.   ;D

3.  If the DVD/BD is a U.S. import, chances are, it will have this white sticker or label at the top, bearing the title.  I make sure to keep it intact by slitting it in the middle (longitudinally) instead of completely peeling it off the case.  I like it that way so my dvds/bds would still look new even after I open/unseal it.

4.  And this is a weird habit of mine...  If by any chance I couldn't keep rule #1 and the shrinkwrap happens to have stickers on it, I cut out those stickers and keep them inside the DVD/BD case.  Wala lang... trip ko lang.  LOL

5.  All DVDs/BDs with slipcases MUST be placed inside a resealable plastic bag and kept in an airconditioned room.

6.  SteelBooks, as much as possible, should be kept sealed.  But if I couldn't keep this rule, then they also must be placed inside resealable plastic bags once they are opened and kept in an airconditioned room as well.   ;D

well there ya go.  that's all I could think of right now... will add na lang if I thought of some more...  ;D  ;D

amen to original plastic casings. kapag may stickers 'yung plastic at mejo sira na, i still keep them but placed them inside a new resealable plastic. in that way, parang nasa orig state pa rin siya. hehe. even for my CDs. i also avoid taking out the price tags sometimes para malaman ko how much i bought a certain title pagdating ng araw. part na rin ang history at authenticity niya like 'yung mga price tags sa books.  ;D

it really is hard to say no. if someone borrows a title from me, i usually just smile. sometimes, i immediately shift topic and act as if i did not hear him/her. although lately, my friends seems to have gotten the drift. no one is borrowing anymore.  ;D

but someone borrowing from me before getting the dvd is better than one who "borrows" after getting hold of it. like --- you invite friends for dinner and some drinks. and then while you were busy preparing the food and drinks, unknowingly, one of them had already "borrowed" your titles. before parting ways, he/she would say "uy...hiniram ko nga pala ung MGA dvd mo ha.>:( (then he/she will show you the dvds in his hand or in his/her bag)

this is the reason why it is better to store our precious dvds and blu-rays in enclosed shelves with locks.  if they insist on borrowing the dvds, you can say.. "ay nawala ko na yung susi ng lock"  LOL

^ hindi pa rin.   :D  :D

IMO, it's easier to say "no" to a fellow collector because you know that he/she would understand as he/she is a collector as well.  In the first place, I don't think fellow collectors would borrow dvds and bds.. not unless trade, swap or hiraman kayo.  Also, in case a collector has yet to watch a certain movie, chances are he/she will download a torrent first or watch a sparrow instead of borrowing before buying the original.   ;D

agree on this one. you would have the same line of thought about your collections. "ayokong magpahiram, malamang di din ako pahiramin"  ;D ;D ;D

on the other hand, a fellow collector would also know how to take care of your dvds too. perhaps he/she would handle it the same way you would. on that note, personally, it would be a little bit easier to say yes to a fellow collector.
