DivX: What is it?
« on: Jul 19, 2005 at 02:48 PM »
Hello.

Can anyone explain what Divx is?  ::)I 1st encountered the term during the early days of DVD. IT was coined Divx: DVD Ripper. All I knew back then was it was an expensive alternative to DVD to the customers point of view. I see several threads stating that this player is Divx compatible. Is this significantly important? Are there Divx discs sold here? Are they any better in sound and resolution compared to DVDs? Hope you guys can clear thing out. Thanks ;D

esi, hope this helps:

"Simply put, DivX® is an advanced digital media format. DivX lets you play, create and share digital video by turning bulky videos into lean, mean DivX files. The DivX® codec (short for compressor/decompressor) can compress video to a convenient size without losing any noticeable quality and play those videos back on almost any device. For example, the DivX codec can compress an MPEG-2/DVD file to nearly one-tenth its original size or a home movie (DV) 25:1."

Courtesy of the DivX site.

In real world terms, an entire 90 minute film can be compressed from 4.6GB to just over 700MB. If you record a 45 minute TV show to DivX, the resulting file size is about 350MB.

DivX traces its roots to the MPEG4 standard. It shouldn't be confused with the old self-destructing DIVX DVD format that Hollywood studios tried to release in the late nineties.

it is a CODEC (Compressor Decompressor)

as of now its on the latest version 6.0

and belongs to a family of MPEG4 which is now the reigning new standard for video and audio because of portability to other devices like cellphones and other electronic gadgets

people might be confused that DIVX and MPEG4 is the same.  -- they are different

MPEG4 is a standard while DIVX is a CODEC,

Other MPEG4 Codecs
are as follows

XVID, MOV, AAC, DIVX, ASF, RM, WMV, OGM, OGG, Nero Digital Files (MP4) etc

This should be the criteria of buying DVD player that says its an MPEG4 capable player, other claims they are DIVX player so it was tested according to DIVX Codec but not 100% on other MPEG4 CODEC.

Hope it helps

Regarding the formats.  Why do they have so many extension names when they are just the same quality.  Is it like System, with Secam, PAL, NTSC???

Codecs are just plugins, while MPEg4 is the Driver???

I'm wondering if anyone has tried converted the high definition clips into DivX format & later playback on a HDTV either thru a computer or an upscale dvd player. Really curious of the picture quality.

I've just bought a DVD player that can play DivX & upscale to 720p/1080i thru HDMI output. Unfortunately, I haven't got any HDTV to try out my new player :(

You might want to check out www.videohelp.com.  This site has lots of information on how to convert videos  from one format to another (DVD's VCD's, SVCD's, DivX, etc...).  Since you are converting VHS and video 8 tapes, you might need some hardware to connect your VHS/video8 player to your computer/laptop.

Can't comment on mini dv tapes as I personally don't use them so I am no authority.  My guess is the player of these tapes, i.e. the Mini DV Camcorder, has the capability to directly connect to the computer and the bundled software with this device would have the capability to convert the movie to something digital which the computer can use (e.g. mpeg).

With regards to DivX files, they can be burned to CD/DVD as ordinary data file.  Usually, DivX capabile players would read the contents of the inserted CD/DVD just like how a computer does.  If the player is unable to play the DivX file, it usually means that the file is using a higher DivX version (e.g. DivX 5.0, DivX 6.0, etc...).

Guys,

I have searched the videohelp site but I was not able to find the exact conversion I needed, or maybe, the terminologies are just too technical for me. All I want to know is how to convert my V8 and VHS tapes to DivX files and burn it using my laptop ( with only CD burner ). Also, how to download divx movies, etc and make divx cds from it.  Thanks for your help.

Titanium, I'm not familiar with your first question but for the second part, may able to provide some insight.  :)

In case you don't have the Divx player, you can download it at  http://www.divx.com/divx/ choose the DivX Create Bundle (Includes DivX Player, DivX Pro codec and DivX Converter).

DivX Create lets you:

Convert videos to DivX in one easy step
Create videos with advanced interactive features
Play back all DivX videos

However, it's a trial demo which will expire in 15 days. After you've converted all your video files into DivX, burning into your CDs is very easy :D

To download HD movie trailers & short clips including those in high definition 720p, here's a link that contain many interesting clips!  ;) Enjoy!
