hey guys, I'm new to this thread. I was reading the earlier posts and i agree about the lame quality of contemporary Pinoy films. Could someone lobby to have films transferred to DVD from the birth of Pinoy cinema to at least up to the early 90s? Especially films from the 60s and early 80s (Oro, Plata, Mata is a personal favorite), because almost everything else after 1990 to the present kinda s**ks.

I do think, too that hat should really be released on dvd formates (or even vcd) are the pinoy classics such as those you guys have mentioned.  It's pretty embarassing that a lot of asian countries are already releasing their classics while we don't even have decent film stock of ours.  Sad to say that the Film Archives don't even have the means (financially and technologically) to restore classics suh as those my De Leon.  If I remember right, I was told in one film class at UP that the original director's cut of Oro Plata Mata is no more as Regal re-used the cut negatives.  If I'm not mistaken almost on hour's footage was cut out and re-used  >:(

Interstingly, some sites describe Brock'as Macho Dancer as Thai film.
To the table or to bed, you must come when you are bid.

A Real Job
written & directed by: Ana Barredo
official website: www.arealjob-themovie.com
about Ana Barredo (Writer/Director/Co-Producer):  Born in Manila, Philippines, Ana was 18 when she migrated to the United States with her family in 1986. Years of working in a video store while going to UCLA inspired her to write A Real Job in 1998. Not quite sure how to go about giving her first screenplay life, she bounced around the idea to her friends about actually making it into a movie. To her amazement, everyone she asked supported her idea and generously volunteered their precious weekends to help her make this dream come true. So with the help of over a dozen creatively resourceful friends, a 4-week crash course in Film Production at the AFI, a couple of major financial backers (namely Visa and Mastercard), and a $4500 investment on a Canon XL-1 from Ebay, her first movie A Real Job was born.

Technical Information
Release Information:
Studio: Image Entertainment
Theatrical Release Date: January 1, 2001
DVD Release Date: June 4, 2002
Run Time: 94 minutes
Production Company: Image
Package Type: Keep Case

Aspect Ratio(s):
Widescreen letterbox - 1.66:1

Discographic Information:
DVD Encoding: Region 1
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo)

Edition Details:
- Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only)
- Color
- Widescreen letterbox format
- Commentary by writer-director Ana Barredo, actor Alan Natale, producer Henry Rivas, and sound guru Vini Cirilli

note: - Part way through the commentary Director Ana Barredo admits that this isn't a 'sober' commentary as they kick back a few more Corona's. While I don't think everyone should do commentaries under the influence, I do think the casual conversational atmosphere on the commentary track compliments the movie very well. 'The gang' takes a nice lighthearted approach at talking about the film, which results in a fun track. (taken from DVDTalk's review of "A Real Job" DVD)

Regal Films is planning to release 40 DVDs for their 40th Anniversary. For the partial list click here. I hope the rest of the list would include City After Dark and other Ishmael Bernal movies he made under Regal like Hinugot sa Langit, Pabling, & Bilibid Boys. Is there a way to suggest what movies to include?

Hi Fox Mulder!  You could check-out PilipinoSuperStore or ReflectionsOf Asia (both links lead to the "Live Show" info/order page).  I believe both sites ship overseas.  Just visit their respective info pages just to be sure.

Hope this helps. :)

Fox Mulder,  may I suggest that you wait for Live Show DVD na lang, instead of other format. Regal announced this title as well as some other goodies  :o as part of their anniversary thing. Bibili rin ako nito tiyak!

Bartmaniac, totoo ba na talagang hindi available diyan sa Pinas ang Live Show? Eh ang Scorpion Night mayroon ba?

Barrid, both titles are not yet available on DVD dito.  I believe mauuna pa sa US since Regal titles are known to be pressed in the states.

On VHS or VCD formats naman, I don't have an idea if the said titles came out.  Someone out there might have an idea.

Batang West Side DVD in the works?

The quoted info below came from boris_escargot -- our new PinoyDVD columnist. :)  Check out his column "Boris' Borscht!!" at the R3 Buzz section.

A juicy bit just in and hot off the rumor mill. Batang West Side - yes, that one, is coming to DVD! No details at post time, but keep tuned for more tidbits. Let's just say, it's not a Viva or Regal release. I wonder what suprise the DVD will have in store for us. Stay tuned!

By the way, welcome to PinoyDVD, boris!

Hello, Kings!  You're not alone looking for that elusive Jose Rizal DVD.  Only one (so far) has been known to exist and it's in the hands of one PinoyDVD member. ;D  Follow this thread for a backgrounder about this 'mysterious' DVD. ::)

By the way, here's how it looks like: 8)

Hi to all,

Just visited this thread now and would like to satisfy my curiosity.  I've noticed most of the films now available on DVD are recent films made over the last 5-10 years.  What about films made in the 70s and 80s that are consdered well made or classics at the time of their theatrical relases.  Top of my mind at the moment are ORO PLATA MATA, TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG,  NUNAL,  INSIANG to mention some.  And I'm not even asking about the films of the 60s and earlier considered as cinematic masterpieces or great directorial works among local films (like the movies of Rosa Rosal, Pancho Magalona, Charito Solis, Rita Gomez, etc)

Are these old pinoy films unrestorable?  Is there any government or private instituion or agency tasked with restoring these old films and putting them on DVD digitally remastered ala CASABLANCA,  IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, BEN-HUR, etc?

Or is the effort just too expensive for the limited pinoy market?

I don't know where else to put these releases.  The "List of DVDs that have connections with the Phils." thread has long been locked.

Anyway, presenting The Blood Collection! ;D

from www.dvddrive-in.com:

This fall, Image Entertainment will release six long-awaited drive-in horror favorites from Hemisphere Pictures. Promoted on DVD as "The BLOOD Collection," these are five Philippine titles along with Al Adamson's BRAIN OF BLOOD. All of the discs will have extras: THE BLOOD DRINKERS (with trailer), BRIDES OF BLOOD (with trailer) THE MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND (with trailer and "Green Blood" prologue), BEAST OF BLOOD (with trailer and Celeste Yarnall interview) BRAIN OF BLOOD (with trailer and Sam Sherman commentary), BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRES (aka CURSE OF THE VAMPIRES with trailer--authorized complete, uncut version from original negative). The discs will also include a new Eddie Romero documentary/interview and special trailer reels!

I just saw this now. You can try contacting CCP's Sineklab. I became an honorary member and was fortunate enough to be at one of their screenings of a restored "Oro, Plata, Mata", "Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon?" "Biyayang Lupa(?)" and "Noli Me Tangere" a couple of years back. Oro was fully restored, I think. Don't know about the alleged missing hour of footage. The only glitch was the first scene, the whole party was re-edited wrong so you have to figure out the sequence later on. I'll try to see if I can contact the guy in charge about our concerns.

Thanks Dan,

I await your contact.  I pressume these titles can be bought commercially from them, right?  Hopefully not at outragieously high  prices.  ORO would be my priority.  You mentioned an hour-long footage missing!!!  The movie iteself is no more than 3 hours, so that's a thrid lost?  And the initial scenes re-edited?  Interesting how the DVD looks like.  Then it's not really restored to its original state.  May not be worth getting at that condition.  Have you seen this title at home?

That's what I'll be talking to the guy about. Even if it's not on DVD format, I'll work on trying to see how lowly me can help get these films out commercially. About the 1 hour missing with ORO, it's just a rumour. And the whole first scene was re-edited wrong only on the 1996-97 restoration. Peque Gallaga was furious during the screening. But all the cuts were there so it's not hard to rectify the error easy enough.
We watched it on 35mm film. Portable Screen setups and all. What can I say? Malinis. Very clear print. You'll definitely appreciate it.

Here's a movie not yet on the list (I think):

For Your Height Only, starring Weng Weng

Found it on Amazon. They are referring to a DVD version of the movie, despite Amazon only currently carrying in VHS at the moment. Here is the link:

Hi pinyapple!  "For Your Height Only" used to be a part of this list but it was later transfered to another list (List of DVDs that have connections with the Phils.) since this release is not a true-blue PinoyDVD since its redubbed in English and directed by an foreigner.

But if you look at the early postings in this thread, the title has been mentioned already (I think twice before this one :) ).  There's even a separate thread devoted only for this title: Cult Classic AND it's a Pinoy DVD!.

FYI :)
