What I was able to put together for the last two months...

Laptop: Asus K450C on Windows 7
Player: Foobar
DAC1: Muse USB DAC (used for USB to S/PDIF duty)
DAC2: Behringer DEQ2496 via AKM4393 DAC
RTA: Behringer DEQ2496 with Aikido Tube Output
Interconnect: Cal's Cables / JD Labs S/PDIF RCA to AES/EBU XLR
Preamp: Aikido Tube Preamp 12SN7
Amplifier: Honey Badger (diyAudio's official prototype)
Speakers: Wharfdale 9.1
Speaker Wires: AWG #12 Flatcord
Accessories: Android remote to follow

Signal flow:

Laptop > MUSE DAC (as USB to S/PDIF converter) > S/PDIF to AES/EBU converter > Behringer DEQ2496 AKM4393 DAC and RTA with Aikido Tube Output > Aikido Tube Preamp > Honey Badger > Wharfdale 9.1

and finally > My Ears ;D

Good to know brader na you like the sound of that Asahi Kasei chip. May nagpahiram sa akin recently ng DIY dac with AKM4399 chip, very analog sounding!  8)

Yes brader, worth every Yen I paid for and more. Buti na lang may brader tayo na "nagbitbit" para makauwi dito ito hehehe...

Asahi Kasei chips are like the specops of DAC chips, they always get it right the first time. :)

Uy!  Nataong AKM4399 chip din ang gamit ni Schiit sa Bifrost :)

"AKM4399 DAC and Discrete Analog Section
Even without considering upgradability, Bifrost offers incredible value. A case in point is its AKM4399 32 bit D/A converter, used in DACs costing many times more than Bifrost. The Bifrost Uber analog section is a fully discrete, low noise JFET design, just like multi-thousand-dollar 'statement' DACs."

They're very musical but if you look at their datasheets, they're not that impressive in terms of "numbers". Actually, there are other DACs that surpass AKM chips, spec wise - but we never listen to datasheets. :P ;D

That is probably why they are coined in the industry as the "miracle DAC" chips. 8)

Yes. It's a pity they got over-shadowed by ESS with all the hype on the sabre chips (which certainly beats other chip manufacturers spec & feature wise). But all those numbers & graphs won't show a DAC's "musicality"   ;)

I'd say the Sabre chips are more "analytical" while the AKM chips are more "musical"  8)

Even the more expensive (high-end) brand "Esoteric" utilizes AKM chips with their products  ;)

I believe their specialty market is the manufacturer of gears and not the end user. Though sometimes manufacturers tend to choose parts that are already popular to ease and aid in marketing their products.

I do read datasheets and graphs in the hopes of understanding why things are the way they are. I was trained in such a way so I can't just dispense those headache-inducing graphs and charts.

But I think it is safe to say that like everybody else here whose an avid music listener, all we yearn for is to enjoy our music the way we like it, just as much as we enjoy our cup of coffee and/or slice of cake.

As a profession, those numbers matter to me too, but when coffee and cake is served - I'd say the hell with the brands and numbers, I'll sit back, listen and enjoy! :)

Doc,

It's the powerhouse of the DEQ2496, aside from S/PDIF / AES/EBU capabilities for full and true digital signal control you also get a bunch of features, most of all an RTA which comes real handy. ;)

Critics may frown at the 24/96 rates because 32/192 is already out in the mainstream market. Nevertheless, I did my homework using my eyes and ears and this is what's favorable to my meager taste in sonic quality. ;D

Coffee cheers!

J
