What type of DVD disks for back up of Concerts/Movies?
« on: Aug 28, 2005 at 09:29 PM »
What type of disk do I need to record from other DVD's (in DD or DTS format)?  I'd like to do a backup of my concerts and movies but they don't seem to fit the usual DVD-R or +R.  Do I only have to use DL?  And where can I find those disks?  thanks! :)

you can either use DL, which are very expensive(the cheapest are aound 6 dollars in the US), or shrink the DVD9 to DVD5 so it can fit into DVDr's using some programs like DVD Shrink.

Personally, I prefer -R single layer discs.

Dual layer discs are less compatibile with standalone players and will be more susceptible to DVD rot due to the
nature of its physical construction.

Don't believe what they say about DVD+R's high compatibility with standalones when booktype is changed to DVD-ROM.  DVD-R discs still have higher compatibility.

Try experimenting with the following programs:

1. Rip with - DVD43
2. Compress with - DVDShrink
3. Test with Nero CD-DVD Speed Transfer Rate test.

Read all about it! - Digital Video Forums

PS: The experts at Digital Video Forums recommend a maximum burn speed of 4x.

thanks guys.  After DVD Shrink, I can already copy them directly using Nero to fit into a DVD -R?

Also, , on average, how is the playback quality after compression?  Thanks

I don't really recommend DVD shrink. CCE encoded (DVD-Rebuilder with CCE) would result in better quality but comes at a price of longer encoding time around 7 hours.
