Hi gurus,

Thinking of venturing to the world of vinyls. Anyone here has experience with Technics SL-DD20??? Is it any good? Are the replacement parts still available? Or will this give me a lot of headaches in the future?  >:D

TIA

Hi gurus,

TIA

Sir better go for SL1300, SL1600, SL1700 or if you have the budget, SL1200 MK2 (or MK3, MK3D/M3D, MK5, MK6, MK5G/M5G variants). The reason why the SL1200/1210 remains high in value (whether new or used) is not only because of its durability but also because of parts availability. I have repaired other Technics models but unfortunately when some parts are damaged, replacements are really hard to find. Most of the time, salvaging parts from other units is the only solution. Brand new parts for the 1200s can still be ordered.

So basically when other Technics models have broken parts, repairing and restoring them to it's original state would be very difficult. Especially the ones with automatic cueing tone arms. Same thing applies with Stanton turntables. Their parts aren't easily available.

Just a note: Some people would claim that Stantons are better than Technics because of it's torque (aka world's strongest motor). But in reality, the torque of Technics is more than enough and no need for a stronger one. Also, Stanton decks have very cheap construction especially in the internal. The SL1200 uses it's main diecast frame as its heatsink as part of its unique design whereas the Stanton (ST-150/STR-150) have metal fins internally that serves as heatsinks and gets really hot inside. Some other features that Stanton have added are basically useless especially for home use. They have no resale value like Technics SL1200 does. So going for the 1200s is a very good investment.

I'm not being biased here on Technics 1200s but millions of people who own them would agree. They are built like tanks. I would 100% choose a used SL1200 MK2 (and other variants) over a brand new Stanton anytime.

:)

Wow! Thanks so much for the detailed explanation sir. ;)

Actually, gusto ko nga sana yang sl1200s na yan, yun nga lang I was thinking sa mura lang muna kaya ko naisip yan SLDD20. Since you have confirmed na medyo delikado sya for replacement parts, nagdalawang isip nako kahit mura lang.

Oh well, kelangan siguro talagang manghunting ng SL1200 series longer serviceability... ;)

How about yung mga vintage na Sony, JVC or Pioneer, are they any good? Or any model in particular?

If I may further suggest, better save up for an SL-1200 so that it will be a one time-big time expense for you...can't go wrong w/ the SL-1200!

Actually parang sold na nga ako sa SL1200, just keeping my options open kasi on a limited budget (which might balloon pag anjan na sa harap ko ang item ;D) dahil may iba pang priority currently...

Sir since most (if not all) models from mainstream bands like Sony, Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, etc have been discontinued long time ago, I doubt that their parts are easily available. So as suggested, go for Technics SL1200 (M3D or MK3D are the best models of the 1200 series).

Don't rush in getting one, I'm sure madami pa ma-huhunting dyan. If you need some figures about pricing of new-in-box and used units, PM me. May mga dumadating/dumadaan naman sa akin from time to time. :)

In case you find a beaten one at a very cheap price, don't hesitate and must go for it. Kaya natin ibalik sa dati yan sir.

Just like this one which I did in 2009.

This deck belongs to Embassy club. I picked it up looking like this.

Scraped the paint to metal.

Primer painted.

Base paint.

New parts

Replaced the power LEDs to blue, 33/45 rpm LEDs to white and Pop-Up lamp to bright white LEDs.

New aluminum pitch decals.

Wet sanding after top clear coat.

Getting ready for buffing. Compound, swirl remover, polish and wax.

Scraped platter

Newly painted

Replaced parts were:

Pitch control (removed the bearings and springs)
Aluminum pitch decals
Tonearm rest/clips
Power switch
LEDs (pop-up lamps, 33/45rpm buttons, power switch strobe)
Turntable legs. 1 deck was missing 2 legs.
RCA cables and connectors. Eliminated the ground wires.

The base frame is finished in glossy white and all other parts are in flat white and flat black.

White and black tonearm section

The other pair. Finished in all flat colors. Replaced the pitch controls, tonearm rest/clips, LEDs.

Another one I did for allears/Ivan Esec (from Wired State) back in 2011.

I mixed the paint to match the exact color of the original SL-1210. The SL-1210 isn't really matte black. The color is actually very dark grey.

Before:

General refurbishment:
-scraped and repainted the base frame
-repainted the rubber base
-scraped and repainted the tone arm section
-scraped and refaced/repaint/refaced the platter
-eliminated ground wire
-re-calibrated the tone arm to factory setting
-calibrated the pitch perfect setting
-lubricated the spindle
-all LED lights Strobe,33/45, pop up lamp and pitch
-replaced RCAs

Parts replaced:
-Aluminum pitch decal
-Brand new pitch control (this unit didn't have any when it arrived)
-Pitch PCB assembly (this unit didn't have any when it arrived)
-Pitch knob (this unit didn't have any when it arrived)

After:

Another pair I refurbished for Boyet Almazan in 2011.

A pair of SL1200LTD Limited series. These babies are limited in production numbers. The picture below is the condition of the decks before I took them apart.

Scraped the paint to aluminum diecast

Disassembled the power switch assembly...

After cleaning the tone arm section...

Re-built and calibrated the tone arm assembly...

SL-1200 Limited plate before repaint and reface...

...then

Finished project.

Replaced all lights to super bright white. Strobe, 33/45 and pop up lamps

Hi Nicadraus,

Where can I source the screws for the cover hinges? I was able to buy the cover hinges but it did not come with screws.  And what should be the screw type/size?

Thanks and regards,
