For those using turntables with AV receivers (instead of dedicated audio set up), do you use the "direct" or "pure direct" option, or stereo?

hi all!

[newbie question]

i recall my parents having a turntable and a few records when i was a child, but since then, have not had the chance to tinker with a turntable again.

since joining pinoydvd, i've gone the home theater route and my current set-up is this:

Onkyo 494 (which amazingly, has a phono input)
Mission M73
Mission M7c1
Mission M70 (soon!)

i'd like to expand my set-up to include a turntable.  considering that this is fairly entry-level, would it be a good idea to do so?  or will a turntable require a better set of speakers, or a different receiver? i don't think i'll be upgrading in the next few years and i'm quite happy with my set-up (both for music and HT).  can you recommend a turntable which would match?  Thanks.

for the record, and as shown by my post quoted above, I've been thinking about getting a turntable since 2002! hahaha. more than 12 years in the making.

Up for my query above. Safe to say that the answer should be direct or pure direct? Else, the sound wouldn't be analog anymore since if stereo, it will go through the DAC of the receiver?

pure direct po. di ko lang alam kung may sub channel pag naka set sa pure direct. parang stereo config lang yata(2.0) Pure Direct maintains a signal path from the outputs of the source  all the way thru the AVR with no  A/D, no DSP/AutoEQ, and no backend D/A to the output stages and to your speakers. kung phono input gmit nyo mam bypass lahat. kung line input, bypass pati internal dac if your using an external dac.

madali lang sir magpalit. Kailangan lang sefety precaution na di madamage ang stylus. Focus at concentration sa ginagawa. Mas complicated yung alignment to get correct overhang. Kaiangan dito ng protractor for reference.

Guys, are you really enjoying your turntables? Why? Salamat po.

its my main source chief...secondary lang ang cdp. hindi para sa lahat ang turntable. matrabaho masyado. kung sanay ka sa digital source o headfi ka, bka tamrin kang tayo ng tayo pag palit ng plaka tapos hindi mo pa mapili ang gusto mong kanta.
ikaw chief, whats your reason why do you want to have a turntable? na curious ka lang ba? o dagdag source lang? o may vinyl collection ka na gusto mong pakingan uli? o gusto mong ikumpara yung present rig mo sa analog?

btw chief, yung enjoyment is relative...just like me, i enjoy my turntable ksa sa headphone ko at sa cdp ko....sa iba, its the other way around.  but just in case youll be getting a table, maganda na din yung meron ka na player ng lahat ng medium....prang boy scout lang, laging handa! :D :D  ;) :D :D

Thanks Dodie for the answer.

"Vinyl has always offered a more intimate experience. There is something wonderfully interactive about putting on a record, listening to a side, and then flipping it over to hear the other side. It makes the listening experience something in which you are constantly physically and emotionally involved. It's social and fun, a far cry from the passive aural experience of CDs or digital."

To sum it up, "Vinyl isn't just music. It's an experience. And one that's worth paying for.

Exactly my sentiments when I got into this journey. The almost ritualistic process of playing an LP is highly engaging and puts me on that state of "undivided attention" for the music. When you play an LP, it's like a commitment you make to listening intently after you have cleaned the record and put the needle on it and start playing. And when the music starts, its like harvesting the fruits of your labor. :D

All those mentioned maybe with the exemption of the 1200. Rp1 vs sl1200, medio di ako sure if better si 1200 sa sq... depende siguro sa cart.

If you want a significant step up, try the lenco with Jelco Arm, or the VPI turntables... Lynn TT din if me makita ka...

Try to contact George Mabasa, I think sia si Ihatejazz sa wiredstate.

Bang for buck would be the rp1, bigger bang for bigger bucks  would be the rp3.

Cheers :)

Guys, are you really enjoying your turntables? Why? Salamat po.
As someone who just recently got a turntable, here are my thoughts.

Yes, I enjoy it because it's different from listening to my cds and digital files. Iba yung experience.

I don't think it's better though. Just different. And for someone like me who has cds and digital files and listens via headphone, car stereo, cd player and wireless DAC, it has a lot of "buts":

1. Vinyl is expensive;
2. You can't play it on the background while doing chores, or surfing the net, or playing mobile games, for example. You'll have to run back to your turntable every 20 minutes or so. In other words, it's not for the multi tasking generation hahaha;
3. Part of the fun is looking for records, whether brand new or used. But it also takes a lot of time. Unlike digital downloads where it's easy to find your songs from iTunes or HD tracks, and you can do this in the comfort of your home at whatever time of day;
4. It's not portable;
5. Parang mahirap maintenance nya. You need to check your needle every so often in case it has accumulated dirt (you'll hear it though hahaha).  I tried watching one of those Michael Fremer videos on how to set up your turntable properly, and reading articles on changing whatever component of my rp3 so it will sound better and I just ended up thinking "so that's why cd players and digital music players were invented."  Hahaha.

Tried Vinyl before, late 90's up to 2004. Never really enjoyed it. I didn't like having to stand up every so often. Hehe.
