What is better for newbies to purchase, a Rega RP1 or Japan surplus vintage Sansui? Lets discuss about sound quality, maintenance, parts availability and resale value. Thanks PDVD.

I've gone the route of vintage tables, and of course if you can find a nice mint/working direct drive table that would ideal.

Of course, if you want instant reliability and want it fuss free, a Rega RP-1 would be your best bet. I have Queen turntable that is based on the RP-1 (but with an RP-3) motor and coupled with an Ortofon Red cart, sounds the same if not a bit better than my vintage idler Pioneer (when it was running properly).

SQ for me depends more on the cart and phono stage rather than the table, if we are talking about this price range (eg RP-1 vs vintage).

+1 Totally agree with this.
Of course, what you can do as suggested, is audition both the Rega & the vintage TT.
Depending on your location, I am sure members would be glad to help you audition their Rega and/ or Vintage TT.

If you're anywhere near San Juan pm me.
Good luck.

It takes a lot of dedication if you plan on exploring the world of vinyl.

Is it for you? Only you can answer that.

I suggest you buy a common/safe tt like the rp1 (may goldring pa ba?), if you like vinyl you can easily dispose of it and upgrade. If you dont, Im sure someone here in the forum would be happy to buy them from you.

Im not sure you can do this with a vintage japanese tt... but if its a 301, a 124 or a Lenco then its another story.

I have used vinyl's until late 1980's (with my dad's system) and my wife inherited vinyls collection since 1930's from his late uncle. I have at least some idea on how they work but was left behind (30 yrs behind).

If the entry point is Rega RP3(heavy platter) with Red Ortofon then it is a long term turntable for vocals and jazz. I believe SL-1200 still is the table to beat for Rock.

Finally after contemplating on what to get, I went to the vintage path due to limited funds and I love vintage items since I want my system to be as simple as possible and believe that vintage units are made to last due to its simplicity of design and less or to no electronic parts. Also rather than spending funds on expensive turntable I will use it in getting a good headset. Thanks PDVD.

Just return it and have it repaired. Looks like the mk2 suffers from faulty speaker wiring.

As for me, i prefer the vintage japanese tables than contemporary ones. Proper set up i.e. Alignment, tracking force etc. is a must if you really wanna enjoy your vinyls. :)

Hi guys!

I just bought my first turntable (RP-1) and a plaka. Ang sarap pala talaga sa tenga ang vinyl. Di nakakapagod pakinggan.

Quick question lang, what should I look for when buying my vinyls? I heard merong mga Japanese pressings etc.. original.. re-issue? Paano ko malalaman  kung saan country pressed?/made yung plaka?

Thanks!
