or you can just air dry it. be careful though when you do the air drying outdoors. make sure the sun doesn't shine directly on the vinyls or you get a warped record.  also make sure you're not near a dusty road or surroundings.

reynold,

i don't know the street number of rene's shop. but it is easy to find. it is at the corner of filmore and calatagan streets. here's the directions.

if you are at buendia going to taft, make a right turn at filmore street. that's the first steet after crossing south superhighway. the second street is calatagan. landmark is reyes hair cutters.

After cleaning your LP successfully, NEVER EVER return it to the same sleeve it came from.  Get a new one.  Unless you can clean the sleeve as well.  That may be difficult with paper sleeves.

Personally, I never had mildew in my LPs when I had them.   But I read in an audio magz that you better not waste time cleaning an LP with mildew.  Because mildew eats vinyl. Hence, the groove information will never be the same even if you've successfully cleaned it.

Sir stereophile,
Yung iba kasi pag pinatugtog, tumatalon na yung stylus, sayang medyo ok pa man din yung album :(

That means there's gunk/detritus in the grooves from mold or breakdown of the paper sleeves. Sometimes, this can be minimized by many washings and running the grooves thru with a spare, good condition, cheap stylus to dig out the gunk. Follow this with a repeat cleaning.

If you're interested, here's how vinyl is cleaned at the US Library of Congress:http://www.loc.gov/preserv/care/record.html

Oh my, have they?  It's been quite a while since I've been there last.  Sorry about that. How about its sister company Fully Booked? I haven't been to Power Plant Mall for maybe close to a year.

Medyo dusty lang yung iba but there are titles na ok pa rin, they are selling those at 20, 25, 50 to 100 pesos. Goodluck and happy hunting ;)

Just a follow up, how do you clean the stylus? Are there any home remedies for this? or do you have to buy some special cleaning fluids for this

there are brushes and solutions designed for cleaning the stylus. alternately, you can also use zero dust, a gel-like blob that can take some grime from the stylus.

Hi Doc,

My routine:

1. I first clean the stylus using the "magic eraser" prior every listening session

http://wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12840

Or you can brush it very lightly with those being used by ladies sa pag make up.

2. With regards to LPs

2.1 I clean them (2nd Hand) upon purchase using DIY solution (20% alcohol, 80% purified/distilled water, few drops of Joy). This also depends on the seller, may seller na whose LPs I don't clean anymore since malinis na. Change also those inner sleeves na marumi na.
2.2 I clean them using an antistatic brush prior play, do not use those pranelas being sold on streets for cars, daming static fibers after rubbing on vinyls. Better to use those old "sandos".
2.3 Hold the LPs on the sides to prevent fingerprint smudges.

I suggest you browse this WS thread ... very informative.

Very helpful people on newbies like us.

Hope I was able to help. Enjoy the analog music!

You are right... it acts as signal enhancer and noise filter like I did from Phono stage I connected to Pioneer EX9000 Dynamic Range Enhancer before the preamp, the result is more cleaner and livelier sound....  8)

Yes, you must have all these devices to mount and allign the catridge. there are lots of reference in vinyl assylum amd other sites. Good Luck!...  :o

Technics is my cart used in my Technics TT and connected to Denon, it was OK that time. Now, i'm using ortofon vms3e on SME arm mounted on Audio linear TT and am very happy with the result. Have plan to try other names like Audio Technica, Shure or Grado, only these that fit to my budget.  :(

the protractor is just to ensure parallelism of the needle with the lp grooves at any given position. if you can do it without its aid, yes u may....

with regards to cart selection, each has its different sonic character...know thyself...listen to as many options as you can....make your choice...in this particular order.

it really boils down to personal taste kc. goodluck doc.

Hello, I finally tried analog, I have a Pioneer-12D (from the baul) and I bought MF-XLP from nadb, And bought a Shure m92 cartridge at audiophile. Anyways I would like to ask is when I played some LP's there was a loud and low hum. Pagnilakasan ko volume, masmalakas pa ang hum kaysa sa music.I checked my connections, ok naman lahat even grounding. When I lift the tonearm wala syang hum, when you touch the stylus may hum ulit. Tester ko mga cable sa headshell and tonearm ok naman lahat at hindi grounded. Ano po kayang problema?

Even with the loud hum I still tried listening, feel ko mas malaki ang soundstage at maraming pop. After 5 mins tinigil ko na sakit na ng ulo ko sa hum  ;D

have you check the platter and spindle? it has to be grounded also.. check also the power supply, this maybe the culprit... again double check all wirings just to make sure.... ;D Good Luck! :D

try checking the wire contact on the cartridge pins, minsan akala mo naka solder pero putol pala sa joint.

That would be a grounding problem.  Check the ground wire between the turntable and phonostage if it's properly secured.  If hum still occurs, extend the ground wire up the the amp.
