I had a hum problem also when i first bought my turntable, when i brought it to the shop for repair what the technician did was to replace the old phono rca cables with new ones. after that wala na kahit konting hum.

hi guys, nag experiment ako kagabi, i hooked up my turntable to my old cd tube buffer na pinagawa ko noon kay jojo, and to my surprise mas tumaba ung tunog, hehe, kaso lang may konting hum, pede rin pala un sa turntable, hindi lang pang cd,  ;D

bro, walang "ground" yung tube buffer di ba?? baka kaya may hum?? what's your TT pala??

hi jen,

kumusta diha sa dabaw bai?  ;D

actually before i replaced the phono cables ang lakas ng hum kahit nakakabit ung ground sa ampli, then pinapalitan ko sa audioworld tapos nawala yung hum

Ngayon kapag nakakabit diretso sa amp walang hum pero when i use the tube buffer what i do is connect the ground to the amp but the phono cable to the tube buffer and another cable from the buffer to the amp, un nga lang may konting hum that is barely audible when using the buffer, otherwise its ok naman

BTW, the tt is an old technics sl1600 which i got from wiredstate b&s

cheers,

sandy

I guess bypass connection is the reason of hum... why connect the ground parallel to your cable to tube buffer then to amp..  :D

Simple, connect the ground wire of your turntable to the tube buffer  chassis, then extend the ground wire so that this is also connected to your amp.

is it has screws for top cover? if yes unscrew one at the back or side then connect the ground wire then in series connect another wire to your amp. if none, scratch small area at the bottom of the case then solder small wire or eyelit wire connector to cnnect the ground wire. ( buffer => amp ) This is called pararllel connection of audio wire and ground wire...  ::)

Got it at 5th Ave Shangri-la for 5T+.

I met a friend and bought some 80's LP's at Rockwell. He was so amazed, we were listening while having beer!  ;D It is also battery operated.  8)

I was in Raon last week and saw that turntable sold there. I'm not sure which part of the street but it could be the Ang Bros. or their neighbors. Also check Pacific Electronics in front of the Angs' store. If not there, check the shops on the other side of Raon going to Ongpin.

Noly,

Got it from the SOS branch here at Ever Ortigas, a month ago.  Nagpapahanap pa ako sa kanila, as my officemates would like to have one too.  Wala pang feedback

Dana,

Yes, new production.  The left knob is for the power & volume control, while the right knob is the tuner.  The switch beside the power/volume knob is for the 3 function selector (Radio, Phono, Tape)  while the other switch is for AM/FM.  The TT is automatic, it'll turn on once you engage the tonearm onto the record, and will automatically turn off when it hits the inner groove.  It has 33/45/78 speed selector.  It's a stereo, thus, it has two speakers, one on each side.

It's not battery operated, unfortunately, but with some DIYing skills I think this could be easily converted to DC power.

Also, it has a lineout, thus easy to upload music into my PC.

Pls. help, vinyl gurus.

I recently acquired a surplus Technics SL-1900.  I managed to find a replacement Sony cartridge, the model of which I do not know, since it is not indicated anywhere.  The accompanying stylus has marking ND-14G.  I searched the web, and this is one I have found:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-ND150G-Turntable-Stylus,-ND-14G,--ND14G,-ND-14G_W0QQitemZ280196780326QQcmdZViewItem?IMSfp=TL0801310851a17921

So the cartridge could be any of these:
SONY  VL-14G, VL14G,  XL-14GS, XL14GS

On the cartridge box was written PS11.  So, it could actually be an original replacement for the Sony PS11, with S type tonearm.

Now, the question is:  Is this cartridge and/or stylus any good?
Is it better than the stock cartridge EPC-271CS and stock stylus 270ED/270SD (which I could not source out, btw)?
What better cartridge/stylus combo could you suggest to match the SL-1900?

TIA.

if you want stylus replacement for your sony cart....  u can check out DEECO, WATSON in raon.... bring your cart so you can check fittings as they have different numberings.

else for no fuss and budget replacement, you can get the shure m92e (P790) or the shure 44-7 (P2500+) at Audiophile store all around the metro.  U can also check Music store at EDSA near munoz. They have stanton cart for less than 1k.  other options will set you back more than 5k already. make sure you have the cart aligned properly before using for a more pleasurable listenning  ;)

EPC-270 and EPC-280 Technics cartridges are in my collection. I found a couple of spare original stylus for these here in Davao. They're good but I'm not selling them. If you want a good vintage Technics cartridge that could compete favorably with expensive new production models, look for any EPC-205C series !! or Mark 3 and 4.  This series was released in '70s yet -- prices ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 yen -- and who knows, you may find one in Raon at less than P1K. I have a 205C-IIS which is my favorite Technics cart, so far.

BTW, I also have here a Sony XL-15 and an XL-25 and I'm not happy with them.

Sir halls,

Thank you for the Shure suggestions.  I will check these specific models you mentioned.
How would you compare Shure versus Audio Technica carts? or Stanton, for that matter?
I have yet to get my hands on cart alignment :-)

btw, I am from Cebu, so I have yet to check if those metro manila stores are willing to ship items over here.  Or I'll make do with the web.

Sir Sandawa,

Thanks for those Technics tips. Haven't seen much here in Cebu during my last roam.  I'd ask for more info.  There could be other stores with gems in them.  I'd be on the lookout for those carts you mentioned.  I actually have the stock EPC-271CS.  I'll just keep it while waiting for some luck to get hold of matching stylus.

I am relieved to know you do not like your Sony XL-14.  That means my SL-1900 could still sing better  ;D

Thanks again.
