Philippines now DVD-9 capable
« on: Sep 15, 2005 at 06:44 AM »
PinoyDVD learned from industry sources that dual-layer DVD-9 mastering and manufacturing services will soon be available to local content owners. FAS Development Corporation and Pandisk Technology, the two largest players in optical media manufacturing in the Philippines, have upgraded their production lines and are in talks with distributors to shift a significant percentage of their DVD-9 replication requirements locally. Pandisk, in particular, is undergoing a grueling certification process that certain foreign studios demand from manufacturers who enter into contracts with them. In terms of quality, imposing stringent standards should ensure that local companies will be competitive with their Taiwan counterparts.

Local production should bring the cost of quality original DVD releases closer to what the general market can bear. Some distributors are also excited about the greater flexibility in being able to release more catalog titles including hard-to-find films. Currently, the majority of DVD disc releases are imported from abroad although labels and keepcases are now sourced locally.

This is really good news to all of us.  I hope that we will soon see the last of the DVD5 titles being marketed by some of our local distributors such as Magnavision and C-Interactive.  With this upgrade in DVD format, I also hope that this will be accompanied by an upgrade in packaging, as well as more realistic or affordable prices.

i guess one of the primary issues that need to be resolved before certification is an assurance to the studios and distribution outfits that all proprietory rights will be safeguarded by the local manufacturing company.  the studios do not want to re-experience the alleged situation in China where a lot of the local subcons manufacturing branded items for foreign corporations are suspected to be making and selling unauthorized production runs.  these unscrupulous manufacturers are also suspected to be manufacturing similarly-branded items (technical imitations) even after their contracts have lapsed.  also, there will always be the concern of pre-manufacturing leakages to local dvd pir*tes.

Well the good news is that both Pandisk and FAS are already cleared by the studios. Both produce the bulk of the VCD and DVD-5 Hollywood releases that are sold in the country. With DVD-9, the major concern is really quality since the failure rates tend to be higher.

the certification is good news indeed.  that means the studios' trust (at least on the integrity side) is still there...  then maybe Paypal will include the Philippines someday. oops, OT! hehe!  ;)

Good news indeed.  That way maybe we can get to see 250/299 titles as regular prices and not just during sale season.  And in my opinion, that would deter or kill piracy.
