baka la pa sila budget. malaki rin ata ang naibigay nila sa fpj campaign. besides, bibeth is still on the road to full recovery. kaya siguro pahinga muna sila...

i liked his film debut Misis Mo, Misis Ko also Azucena... i hated Kailangan Kita with Gretchen Baretto, Gabby Concepcion & Edu Manzano it was a tagalog version of the Rob Lowe/Meg Tilly thriller Masquerade directed by Bob Swain.

The The Heiress remake wasn't too bad...Richard Gomez was actually perfect in that role.

I really like his films especially the cinematography and the camera shots from his movies ang lalaki sa buhay i selya, inagaw mo ang lahat sa akin and ligaya ang itawag mo sa akin. i also admire that he uses symbolisms in his movies. the messages na patama sa society and catholicism.

Technically he's good and his production designs and sound recording are impeccable (if a little too brightly lit).

kailangan kita was an obvious adaptation of the movie "masquerade".  nothing much has changed. like you said, para ngang "tagalog version" lang.

yes, Ikaw Pa Lang ang Minahal was The Heiress.  Hihintayin Kita sa Langit was Wuthering Heights. Those two were my faves from Reyna Films.

if they were going to adapt Masquerade in Filipino the least they could've done is to show a little improvement from the original source material. Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit & Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal were'nt just tagalog versions of Wuthering Heights & The Heiress, there were visible improvements from the originals.

Ryan Cayabyab always done excellent and nostalgic music in all of his films. Symbolisms are very prominent also in most of his films but I find the ending so weird in INAGAW MO ANG LAHAT SA AKIN. Maricel Soriano delivered one of her finest performance in IKAW PA LANG ANG MINAHAL, can be in the league of Bernal's HINUGOT SA LANGIT.

I do not know if I will be attacked because of this but Carlitos is my favourite Filipino director. I studied in UP (I was there from 95 to 99) and I was always disappointed whenever I didn't hear any of Carlitos' films getting nominated.

I just wonder if his films are preserved. I hope we would be able to enjoy them in their pristine condition again.

Yes, I also do not like his Ara Mina films.

yeah right... i also share your sentiment dorian_gray. carlitos is one of my favorite directors in philippine cinema. i think he's the best in the 90's.  i remember i was always excited when he releases a movie. i also used to wait for awards nominees. thinking he might be nominated. but sadly no reyna films... he was last recognize with hihintayin kita sa langit. maybe because his films became too controversial in mid 90's.

Best of the '90s? I don't know. Mario O'Hara, Tikoy Aguiluz, Lav Diaz,  Chito Rono did tremendous work during this period. Even at least one film of Celso's (Lihim ni Madonna) and my favorite director (;D) Marilou (May Nagmamahal Sa Iyo) were pretty good.

Quote
there were visible improvements from the originals.

I thought they were fairly adequately translated; I'm not sure about improved upon. I mean--Richard Gomez is believable in the Montgomery Clift role, but as Heathcliff? And the funny part was, the perfect Heathcliff was standing right beside Gomez--Michael de Mesa, who shows every bit the intensity and dark passion that the role requires.

And whatshername as Catherine didn't do the character much credit either. Maricel is a much better choice.

By the way, I was referring to the Young Critics Circle. They are too snobbish.

His films are well-preserved. His mom took care most of all their films including vhs format stored in a 24 hours air conditioned room!

I'm also looking forward to watch his first short film where he started before making those full-length movies.

I also have some of his films on VHS. I still can't let them go because there are VCD/DVD transfers yet.  I have:

Hihintayin Kita sa Langit
Ikaw Pa Lang ang Minahal
Inagaw Mo ang Lahat sa Akin
Abot Kamay ang Pangarap
Ang Lalaki sa Buhay ni Selya (already on VCD but I didn't get it)
Ligaya ang Itawag Mo sa Akin

I loved the ending of IKAW PA LANG ANG MINAHAL although bittersweet. And the song remains one of my personal fave over the years. Very soulful, meaningful.

Uh--no. It's not too bad, and Richard Gomez gives the performance of his career (a social climber--what else? ;D), but we're talking William Wyler here, with Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift.

one of my favorite part in ang lalaki sa buhay ni selya was the scene wherein  rosanna caught ricky davao and allan paule talkng about their love affair. i really like the pan shots from window to window.  the camera follows continously rosanna's movements while listening to the conversation of her two co-stars.

Oo nga no! Jibe na jibe, Noel.  ;D Bagay na bagay kay Richard yung role.

Seriously one of the most poignant scenes there was Maricel waiting patiently for Richard to arrive amidst the downpour of rain and the late Charito Solis persuade Soriano not to wait anymore.....maricel retaliated......"mamahalin niya ako para sa inyong lahat na hindi nagmahal sa akin".

The suceeding year, carlitos was very visible attending the awards night to give moral support to Maricel but all the award giving bodies gave their nod to LT for that Rono flick. Too bad really.

in the hands of a capable director Maricel Soriano gives us memorable performances just like in Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal. she also delivered engaging ones in Bernal's Hinugot Sa Langit & The Graduates. Soriano was also very effective in Saan Darating Ang Umaga? too bad most award giving bodies ignored her performance in the aforementioned films,  at least she won the YCC Best Performer award for Ikaw Pa Lang over Tolentino's overrated performance in Narito Ang Puso Ko.

Only the YCC noticed her in that movie, Jo? During the FAP awards night, the buzz was that Maricel will take home the bacon but the husband of LT was the President during that time, politics really.
