don't get me wrong... i think Kisapmata is a great film but Itim is not just technically superior, it's also very disturbing. Tommy Abuel's nightmare sequence for one comes to mind, and Susan Valdez' abortion scene add Max Jocson's haunting musical score and the ending whew!

It's just me too. We'll meet and have a cup of coffee and argue their relative merits one of these days...

What are the Best Filipino Films

And we have the outstanding directors who continue to make good movies today, like Laurice Guillen (Salome), Marilou Diaz Abaya (Jose Rizal), Chito Roño (Bata Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa), Peque Gallaga (Oro Plata Mata), Joel Lamangan (The Flor Contemplacion Story), Gil Portes (Munting Tinig), Jeffrey Jeturian (Tubog), Lab Diaz (Batang West Side), Maryo de los Reyes (Magni-fico), Jose Javier Reyes (Makati Avenue), and Carlos Siguion Reyna (Azucena).

Posted this at the pelicula egroups, but I do think there's something reaaally wrong with that list, and the lists that follow (for one obvious reason, considering it's me writing this, and for other less obvious (but no less important) reasons.

Bilibid Boys? i don't get it... maybe because he was the movie's production designer?

This also took me by surprise. Could it be because of its pop culture contributions? I remember the title and stars making a big impact when it came out. But then that's too shallow a reason.

Maybe indie boi. I was surprised also when Gallaga mentioned that film. I don't even remember it anymore....Gosiengfiao's UNDERAGE is much better.  ;D The cast was a bunch of Regal babies dominating the scene during that time.

And no filmmaker mentioned the works of Perez & Gosiengfiao but critic Rafael Guerrero and Jessica Zafra has kind words about those two filmmakers from the 70's. Even Noel noted Gosiengfiao's TEMPTATION ISLAND.

I prefer Kisapmata over Itim myself...but that's really splitting hairs, I think; they're both very good films.

don't get me wrong... i think Kisapmata is a great film but Itim is not just technically superior, it's also very disturbing. Tommy Abuel's nightmare sequence for one comes to mind, and Susan Valdez' abortion scene add Max Jocson's haunting musical score and the ending whew!

Kisapmata boasts of outstanding performances from Vic Silayan, Charito Solis & Jay Ilagan... a solid script by Doy del Mundo, Racquel Villavicencio & Mike de Leon himself. but watching the movie just recently doesn't give it much impact as Itim still does to this very day or maybe it's just me...

I like ITIM also. One of my personal fave and you could actually see the genius of a man behind it. Its a perfect film to watch especially during Good Friday and All Saints Day. And the haunting musical score by Max Jocson was also unforgettable especially at the climax of the movie!

The print that Cinema One shows is already deteriorating, man, another sad story of film prints.

There's another top local films thread somewhere here. You may want to look it up. :)

Interesting though that you chose Ligaya as one of your top ten films.

Give them the right project and they can deliver the goods especially Joyce Bernal. Bernal should be given straight serious projects. Her narrative in those comedy films are perfect.

I've seen her Buhay Kamao; she should maybe avoid boxing. I'd like to see her do something serious, but what she does now is so rare I'm glad even if she sticks to that: the well-made light romantic comedy. And she has a gift for it; I'm not sure she has a gift for anything darker, or more dramatic.

She's tried; she hasn't done that well. Let her try more, of course, but I do appreciate her romantic comedies.

She's definitely better than Nora Ephron who did all those Meg Ryan romantic comedies.

Shoot, Ephron's overrated as a writer, and she directs as if movies were coloring books. My dead grandmother is a better filmmaker now than Ephron ever was.

Ephron's films are more of kindergarten stuff.  ;D

Give Joyce Bernal a straight horror film, no comic relief and let's see what she can do.

These three films are undoubtedly the best works of Joey Gosiengfiao. I'll ask Teddy Co this weekend for his lists.

I borrowed the tape from Video 48, Noel. Yup it was recorded from Cinema One. Didn't check Jojo's copy though. I presume he has the complete version.

Watch Jojo's copy. Or better yet, see it on the big screen. It's not colored, anymore, tho, or so I hear--apparently, it's monochromatic, now.

Thanks! I'm curious about the Japan Foundation funded print, tho--what does it look like in, oh, black and white or shades of amber?
