1. Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag-Itim ng Tagak (I think the only Vilma Santos movie I really really liked, and Celso Kid's camera work here is just divine)

Seen Burlesk Queen, indie? It makes even less sense and is, if anything, even more visually poetic. Vilma's even good in it.  ;D

Far as I know, Lee and O'Hara's never worked before. O'Hara really collaborated closely with Brocka from 1970 up to around 1978. Lee's first work with Brocka, far as I can remember (someone correct me on this if I'm wrong) is Jaguar, in 1980, with Pete Lacaba.

Lee's got a strong personality; I'd consider Moral more his film than Marilou's.

Mario's worked with Joey Reyes, tho, on Condemned. What happened was, Reyes gave him a script, he didn't like it, he and Frank Rivera rewrote the whole thing.  ;D

It's wonderful noir--the best Filipino serial-killer film ever made. Well, it's not just a serial killer film; there's more to it. But it's great...

So far only ITIM made it on few horror flicks that we have and its not straight horror.

Was Joey Reyes credited on CONDEMNED, Noel? Yup JAGUAR was Ricky Lee's first collaboration with Brocka.

I do remember CONDEMNED but only snippets of it with memorable performance from Ms. Gloria Romero as the villain.

Burlesk Queen is one of those movies I failed to watch because of the unavilabiltiy of any copies I could watch. Sayang nga because I've heard so much about it. I do remember watching bits and pieces of it on TV when I was a kid and Santos' "dance of death" stuck to my mind. I think Chito Roño cribbed the feel of Burlesk Queen's ending and used it for Private Show.

Joey Reyes is credited but it's really O'Hara's and Rivera's work.

Burlesk Queen is so much greater than Private Show I can't even begin to explain why....the difference between a skilled shoemaker and a Faberge jeweler.

The movie is available on VCd.  I bought from Manila.  Not a great copy though, but still it's better than nothing. Try looking for it on online Pinoy shops.  ;D

PRIVATE SHOW has gritty atmosphere and you can actually smell the sweat of the live sex performers and of course Jacklyn Jose's performance is impeccable......BURLESK QUEEN relies on Vilma's charm and performance also......one of her best along with BROKEN MARRIAGE & TAGOS NG DUGO.

I must admit that I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to Filipino films but I admire our local filmmakers because they can do so much with so little. I just wish that Filipino films would be more available to those, who like me, are very interested in seeing them, but do not have the time, the Betamax or VHS Players. PLEASE restore and bring these films to DVD format.

Anyway, from the very little Pinoy films I've seen, these are the ones I admire:

Insiang
Kisapmata
Bayaning Third World
Magnifico
Keka
Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino

That's all... hehehe, i hope boss keating is happy now...

Hey oggs thanks for your lists finally.......once upon a time we are ahead of our Asian counterparts when it comes to Filipino movies...i just wish we can still compete with Hollywood blockbusters like what happened in the 70's and 80's.....our filmmakers have the talent and perseverance to do what they want but censorship, piracy, and other things block the way in achieving this goal......

someday we can still make it.....hopefully..... :)

True--far more than Joey Reyes' artsy fartsy Live Show.

But Burlesk Queen is so offhandedly lyrical it's almost no contest--that is a great film, flaws and all. Private Show is merely a very well-made one.

Nice list, oggs. But if you see enough Filipino films , I'll bet Keka (which is good and which I liked, for the record) tends to drop off the list.

I'll definitely look for a copy of Burlesk Queen next time I go to the mall. Hopefully, I'd still find a copy.

Noel, what can you say about the execrable Burlesk Queen... Ngayon?

Only that I think it's all the director's fault. Ina Raymundo gives an excellent performance in Jeffrey Jeturian's Tuhog.

Just finished reading Jessica Zafra's TWISTED 7 Book and she acknowledged again the master of camp in the person of Joey Gosiengfiao and its patron saint Elwood Perez.

She was d a m n right those flicks will never be on the Top Ten Best Filipino Films of All Time but gave credit to Gosiengfiao for coming up with TEMPTATION ISLAND, THE DIARY OF CRISTINA GASTON and other flicks by her quintessential sex symbol, Alma Moreno. Admitted that Perez is much superior filmmaker than Gosiengfiao.

KATORSE is so cheesy and yummy because of
Dina Bonnevie.
UNDERAGE is like watching a toothpaste commercial with some social commentaries thrown in.  ;D

Makes me eager to see ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN........ ;D

Jessica Zafra almost forgot and didn't mention ELEKTRIKA in her lists of camp filmography.

Still remember vividly the scene in that surreal flick the mummy chasing
Trixia Gomez......St. Peter, St. John....... ;D

the weirdest Filipino film barnone......;D 8)

My lists will not be 10 anymore since I'll squeeze HINUGOT SA LANGIT. Can't help to do so since this is the only Filipino film that tackles abortion straight forward and honest.

And Maricel Soriano's best moments are captured by Ishma same with Amy Austria.

Critics are still raving on Lav Diaz' EBOLUSYON NG ISANG PAMILYANG PILIPINO but I still have to see his much shorter 5 hour masterpiece BATANG WESTSIDE.

I think Batang West Side is the better film, tho Ebolusyon has its considerable virtues.

This is very late, keating.

And this sort of gives  away that , second to Bollywood, it's Filipino movies (good ones, that is) that I have seen very little of.  Shame, that. But until that changes (and I'm going to make sure it does) here are  my faves:

Himala
Insiang
Anino
La Vida Rosa
Kisapmata
Scorpio Nights
Bomba Star
Itim

In no particular order, of course.

I'm surprised to know that there is one Gosiengfiao on your lists.
