Former finance secretary Jose Isidro Camacho's lists:

1. ORO PLATA MATA
2. MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG
3. TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG

He's probably biased on ORO because Joey Reyes was his classmate in De La Salle University, but he has good taste.  ;D

I had the chance to chill out with direk Joyce Bernal after the screening of KUBRADOR at Cinemalaya in CCP, she's the coolest filmmaker that I've ever met. She keeps on reminding us.......please don't buy my movies! Too late my friend already bought and let her signed his dvds.  ;D

The top ten in her lists, not necessarily in order:

HIMALA
PAANO ANG PUSO KO
MIGUELITO BATANG REBELDE
KAKABA KABA KA BA
MAYNILA SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG
TANGING YAMAN
MANILA BY NIGHT
IKAW LANG
PRIVATE SHOW
ITANONG MO SA BUWAN
PANAGHOY SA SUBA

Thanks to direk for providing us her lists.  ;)

Joyce's list is quite familiar. Miguelito, Himala, Kakaba Kaba Ka Ba, Manila By Night had always been a part of our group's film discussions -- most especially Miguelito when it first came out because there was a part of our group that was raving over the movie.

Private Show was hosted by our film group in UP when we were all still in college. Itanong mo sa buwan, on the other hand, was a staple in our regular movie marathons.

Keating, you should've asked Joyce for her top ten foreign flicks.

Not to mention Joyce herself is one of the most talented recent filmmakers around, skilfull at handling actors and telling a romantic comedy, a not-as-easy-as-you-might-think form to do.

Yeah, man. I should have asked. When I asked her between Brocka & Bernal, she confessed that she likes Bernal than Brocka. His films are more realistic than the dramatic films of Brocka according to her.

We should gatecrash on the shoot of her next film, indie.  ;)

Depends on what you mean by realism. the Brocka of Insiang or Maynila could stand side-by-side with the neorealists, while the Brocka who did Ina Ka ng Anak Mo could sometimes seem like a Third World Douglas Sirk. Bernal Bernal could be openly experimental in films like Himala or Nunal sa Tubig or even Wating, in films like Relasyon or Broken Marriage be like Roberto Rossellini with his Ingrid Bergman films. That's a very complex question there.

I thought you panned WATING, Noel. On the last part of Bernal's career, I can say that PAHIRAM NG ISANG UMAGA can be side by side with RELASYON & BROKEN MARRIAGE

I did pan Wating. It's a terrible, incoherent mess. But it does have some fascinating scenes.

Pahiram--well, I don't know. It's well-made melodrama, but I can't say it's in the league of Broken Marriage or Relasyon.

Celeste Legaspi was effective villain in WATING. Bernal is always at his peak giving out the best in his actors, Carmina was very good in it, even Richard.

I can't imagine Mitch Valdez taking over the role of Celeste.

Celeste was good. Not a fan of Carmina or Richard (except on two occasions--that romantic comedy with Regine (and even there Regine brought more to the party), and that stunningly effective role as the social climber in Carlitos' adaptation of The Heiress.

I bumped into Mark Meily and his wife Lee at the screening of SAAN NAGTATAGO SI HAPPINESS a while ago and he came up with the following lists. I was surprised that he knows pinoydvd also which means he reads the posts here.  ;)

BATCH 81- the most influential movie in his life
ORO PLATA MATA- the second most influential movie in his life
HIMALA
KISAPMATA
CITY AFTER DARK
TUHOG
MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG
ITIM
ORAPRONOBIS
KARNAL

I had a very short chat with him and learned that BATCH 81 cast had a reunion at Eastwood already, dunno if Mike de Leon was there.

Thanks to direk Mark for providing us his lists.

I had a short chat also, ambushed interview with the director of DONSOL, Adolfo Alix, Jr. DONSOL is currently the crowd drawer and box-office hit at Cinemalaya along with SAAN NAGTATAGO SI HAPPINESS and he came up with the following lists:

BIYAYA NG LUPA- the most influential movie in his life
INSIANG
MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG
KISAPMATA
NUNAL SA TUBIG
TUHOG
KAPIT SA PATALIM: BAYAN KO
PAGPUTI NG UWAK, PAG-ITIM NG TAGAK
BRUTAL
MANILA BY NIGHT

again and again..........Brocka's MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG is always on their lists.

Lav Diaz lists, not necessarily in order. He said he don't really have a top ten, only works that he loves.

MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG
INSIANG
MANILA BY NIGHT
HIMALA
KISAPMATA
KUNDIMAN NG LAHI
GALO GIMBAL- an erap estrada starrer
MATIMBANG ANG DUGO SA TUBIG- starring the late FPJ
SALOME
VIRGIN FOREST

He is raring to see the early chiquito and dolphy works, even the black and white bombas, koboys. To quote him which I got thru email:

"Man, we need to see a lot; we're just f**ked we don't have an archive of our cinema."

Thanks to Sir Lav for providing us his lists.

Top 10 Best Filipino Films from the 80's
« Reply #224 on: Nov 27, 2006 at 06:45 PM »
QTV 11 program ANG PINAKA hosted by Pia Guanio unleashed its Top Ten Best Filipino Films from the 80's last night. The jurors include: NICANOR TIONGSON, ERIK MATTI, NICK DE OCAMPO, RUEL BAYANI, ELLEN ONGKEKO-MARFIL and SIGFREID BARROS-SANCHEZ.

1. HIMALA
2. ORO PLATA MATA
3. BATCH 81
4. MANILA BY NIGHT
5. ORAPRONOBIS
6. SISTER STELLA L
7. SCORPIO NIGHTS
8. RELASYON
9. MORAL
10. BONA tied with KARNAL

The jurors defended the merits of each film, the best memorable scene and clips was also shown. Brocka, Bernal, Gallaga, Abaya and De Leon made their best film during this decade where dictatorship ruled our country. The following decade can't match the accolades of these movies.

These are great lists! I hope they follow Hernando's lead and bring in titles from earlier years. And give more than ten.

Why didn't anyone mention Jaguar?

JAGUAR is one of Brocka's best. Lists are really difficult to compile, one may suffer against the other. Ralfy, maybe a poll on Brocka's best will suffice.

I would like to see those Gerry de Leon masterpieces especially EL FILIBUSTERISMO & DAIGDIG NG MGA API, but the availability is always the main problem.

I think we can't find good copies of Jaguar. I also found this article online about de Leon:

when Pierre Rissient first saw Jaguar, he hated Vanishing Tribe's musical score (the only film they scored for Brocka) the movie was later re-scored by Max Jocson and  sent to Cannes.

Speaking of Brocka's JAGUAR, is this the first Filipino film to made it at the Cannes?

no Insiang was the first one in 1978, followed by Jaguar in 1979, then Bona in 1981, Kapit Sa Patalim in 1984 and Orapronobis in 1988.

In every second viewing of a particular film, your preferences changes. This happens when I saw recently Bernal's HINUGOT SA LANGIT.

Activists TOP TEN BEST FILIPINO FILMS OF ALL-TIME: A total of 37 activists representing people's organizations and non-government groups were asked to name their ten best films in random order, 29 of them replied. This survey was conducted from October 1-21 of 2002.

1. MAYNILA SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG
2. ORAPRONOBIS
3. HIMALA
4. TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG/ SISTER STELLA L
5. MINSAN MAY ISANG GAMUGAMO/ ORO PLATA MATA
6. THE FLOR CONTEMPLACION STORY/ BAKIT MAY KAHAPON PA/ TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS
7. JOSE RIZAL
8. BAYANING THIRD WORLD
9. SAKAY
10. MORAL/ MANILA BY NIGHT/ GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON

Again and again, Brocka's MAYNILA SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG is always on the top spot. Mind-boggling choices, JOSE RIZAL over BAYANING THIRD WORLD, huh?!

i vannot believe they included The Flor Contemplacion Story, where's Tikoy's Bagong Bayani? Kapit Sa Patalim deserves to be in the list than Jose Rizal. Bakit May Kahapon Pa was politically charged hence it's inclusion in the list but Sakay? is this the Raymond Red movie? i had problems with it although not a totally dismissible film, it had great cinematic moments and performances...

Mind-boggling really.....here the other films that cited a couple of times but didn't make it on the top ten lists:

BATCH 81
BAGETS
BAYAN KO: KAPIT SA PATALIM
INSIANG
SAKADA
LIGAYA ANG ITAWAG MO SA AKIN
SCORPIO NIGHTS
NUNAL SA TUBIG
KISAPMATA
LUCIA
SANA MAULIT MULI

TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS should not be in the league of FLOR CONTEMPLACION & BAKIT MAY KAHAPON PA. Agree with KAPIT SA PATALIM & BAGONG BAYANI.
