Not sure which company will be releasing it, but it doesn't look like it will be Warner.

Any news if there's going to be a Region 3 release?  I called up Warner again to ask if they indeed will not be releasing this in the Philippines.  Was informed that they will not be the one who will release the DVD and they don't know what company will be distributing it.

Check out the R3 release in Korea. It has a DTS track, unlike the R1 release.

to all those anticipating for the local release of Phantom of the Opera dvd... it will not be released by VIVA. it will be released by C-interactive. the scheduled release will be on Aug 30, 2005. dunno when will the dvd be released, but as usual the vcd will be released first. the dvd is the 2-disc edition but there's no news yet as to whether this will be in region 1 like the LOTR dvds released previously or the locally produced region 3... :-\. hope it will be released in region 1...

No region 1 release for this one guys.  The rights for this film is under Pioneer and C-interactive.  But I think sister company and C-interactive and Warner Philippines.

Really? If that's true, then if I were Warner, hindi ko iyun ipapaalam sa mga tao.

Masisira ang reputation ko as a distributor of quality R3 DVD titles.   ;D

I don't know if I remember it right but some old Warner R3 dvd's have sticker on the back saying "DISTRIBUTED BY C-INTERACTIVE VIDEO".  But those are original imports.

No they're not sister companies and there's no relationship at all. Just so happens that C-Interactive has the rights for New Line releases and other specialty titles including Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunately, Warner was not able to secure the Region 3 distribution rights of this particular film since it's independently produced.

Warner Home Video Philippines is a direct subsidiary of Warner Home Video in the US. Warner titles used to be distributed by Magna (and possibly C-Interactive) before they decided to open up a local office here. If I'm not mistaken, they've only been around for less than 8 years.

C-Interactive is owned by the same group that owns one of the larger CD replication companies in the country with some equity (they say) from Mother Lily. All of their VCD and DVD titles are re-encoded and duplicated locally.

So that is whay they have the c-interactive before.  Thanks for that explanations sir firewired.  I'm enlightened. :)

Oh yes, I remember now - the initial Philippine VCD releases of FRIENDS I bought years ago were by C-Interactive! I'm sure there's been Warner Home Video (Phils.) since the 1980s - I still have a few Betamax tapes purchased from that time with their little white WHV stickers. I think Warner Philippines was only handling VHS/Beta releases of their titles until that time you're talking about, firewired... all their disc releases from before then (VCD and DVD) were by C-Interactive.

But this is the first and only time I'm going to openly praise C-Interactive: Their initial FRIENDS VCD releases were encoded from PAL masters, and as a result, the heads of the characters were slightly cut off when you played these discs on an NTSC TV. About 6 months after I had bought these discs (first three seasons), I went to C-Interactive's main office in Timog, and they actually replaced ALL of my 36 open and used discs with brand new NTSC-mastered copies of the same titles, no hassles/no further questions asked! Very courteous and cheerful customer service.

**********

Back to Phantom, wala pa yung DVD, but I saw the VCD of it earlier today. The packaging is a near-identical replica of the R1 Special Edition DVD. Sana yung DVD na lalabas, ganun din - both packaging and content-wise.  ;)

Already released locally, by C-Interactive.

Php 425:

Mukhang clone ng R1 na 2-disc version, pero malamang compressed yung film from DVD9 to DVD5.

Buy at your own risk na lang.

parang natetempt nga akong bumili nito kasi its not like the usual c-interactive release. widescreen panga sya at ung cover at special features ay parang clone ng R1. if this release is good i would definitely buy this one. it would be my 1st c-interactive discs.

I saw this title at Astro Podium and it looks like it is copied from the R1 release.  However, the cover looks like it came from a pirated DVD - the colors are quite dull.  Just like the covers of other C-Interactive titles, it seems that they just scanned an R1 DVD cover, edited it to remove/add text and images, then had it printed with a so-so printer.  And judging from the price, I'm assuming that this release is also in DVD5 or single-layer.

However, as compared with the price of an R1 (about $19.00, excluding shipping & handling) or even a Hongkong R3 (about P1,200), the P425 is already worth buying for a person on a limited budget, considering that this is a 2-disc widescreen edition.  However, if you are really into collecting DVDs and budget is not really a consideration, I suggest you buy either the R1 or the HK R3.

Sayang -- if only Warner had the distribution rights to this title, dagdag lang ng P49 sa P425 (based on the price of 2-disc Constantine release), meron nang dual-layer version nito at maganda pa sana ang packaging.  Anyway, let's just hope for the day when C-Interactive will have the capability to release quality dual-layer titles.

** I bought the region 3 yesterday and I will confirm everything that sir rafgar said about the cover.  Its just awful. What's worse is that the cover art (paper) is not stuck to the plastic case very well.  There are "bubbles" giving the  cover a "wrinkled" look in several parts.

** According to DVDinFo on my PC:

** Ok, I have just finished watching it on my Samsung DLP ST-50L2HX using a Samsung P538K progressive scan player at a resolution of 720p (component input).  In fairness, the video was just gorgeous and the 5.1 DD sound was excellent.

** Also, amazon.com list the following info for the Region 1:
    Available subtitles: English, Spanish, French
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 5.1)
Behind the Mask: The Story of the Phantom of the Opera
Three making-of featurettes: preproduction, the director, production
Additional scene: No One Would Listen
    Theatrical trailer
Easter egg: cast & crew singalong
    Number of discs: 2

** It seems that the R3 content is practically identical with that of the R1, with the possible exception of the Easter egg: Cast & Crew Singalong, which I haven't yet figured out how to access (If anyone knows how, I'd like to know).

** In summary, it is my humble opinion that this set does not look or sound like an 80 peso POS.  It is, IMHO, worth the P425 price tag.  I have been a fan of this musical since I first saw it on stage in Los Angeles in 1991 and I think that this DVD set accurately captures the essence of the opera and is a faithful adaptation of the theatrical presentation.  Moreover, the movie has a runtime of 142 minutes, a length that fits more than adequately in a 4.68 GB medium.  At least, it is in widescreen and 5.1 DD.  And best of all, it does not have a layer change. :)

Oh, yes, in the movie, they did move the chandelier crash towards the end of the movie instead of the end of Act 1.  So it is not precisely the same as in the original stage presentation.  But I believe, this change works better than in the original libretto.

Got the following from dvdtalk.com.  Hope this works with the R3 release:

On disc 2 highlight "Additional scene: No one would listen" and press "Down", a swirl on the menu border will highlight, press "Enter" and you will be treated to a "Cast & Crew singalong" of the title song. Many of the crew (including director Joel Schumacher) aren't singers and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber gets the last laugh.

Moreover, the movie has a runtime of 142 minutes, a length that fits more than adequately in a 4.68 GB medium.

Although the movie fits in a single-layer DVD, some of the video quality was most probably sacrificed.  However, the video quality would still be a lot better than a VCD.

By the way, does it contain both English and French audio tracks?  I've been wondering if Gerard Butler and Emma Rossum were also the ones who sang in the French track.

I think this is much better than an P80 PDVD since pirated copies of this title do not include the 2nd disc.   ;)
