This film should have won the top proze at the Cinemalaya festival.

Script was tight and consistent. Production design was good. Acting was superb. Cinematography was pretty good.

Kudos to Raymond Lee (Mother Lee) and Michiko Yamamoto for the script. Aureus Solito for direction.

Ho! First time I heard of this. Aureus directed?

Good for him! So this is one of the better if not the best film in Cinemalaya?

Aureus and Raymond are in Montreal now.  Hope Maximo wins!  Their screening in the montreal film festival is TODAY! Pray (those who do) and wish hard (for those who got tired of praying already!)

Congrats! I saw the clip at TVP.  :)

I hope more indie films like this get a chance at our local industry not only outside PH.

Congrats for Maximo especially to the director and writer Michiko Yamamoto. Yamamoto is a genuine gifted writer. MAGNIFICO was brilliant, Maximo is a worthy follow-up.

It should have a wider release in commercial theatres along with BIG TIME.

The U.P. Film Institute has the best movie audience always. The response was tremendous, it was a mixed up of yuppies, cinephiles and students when we watched it.

Great effort, great talents! The only video format entry.

...The film, "Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros," received the Golden Zenith Award at the First Films World Competition at the festival.

It bested Germany"s "Truth or Dare" by Jan Martin Scharf, which bagged the Silver Zenith. The Bronze Zenith went to USA's "London" by Hunter Richards. ...

This was made within a really tight budget (as were the others) but the perseverance and vision of the creators were not deterred.

Saw the film tonight. It was really good -- I had a few quibbles with how Yamamoto tied the whole thing up but in general I loved the film. Direction was tight, cinematography a thing of beauty, production design could rival Don Escudero's work in Scorpio Nights. The acting was really superb -- special mention should go to Ping Medina, that guy should be given more roles!! Yamamoto's script was very natural -- none of that forced, melodramatic lines for her. The local vernacular was used to colorful effect.

All in all -- one of the best Filipino films I've seen in the last ten years.

Please allow me to rant a little...

My biggest gripe about watching Maximo tonight was not the film itself but the environment. Having to endure the pseudo intellectuals and ersatz artistes surrounding me, I suddenly remembered why I never really go to the premiere night of a local film. While waiting for the movie to start, the crowds surrounding me were so noisy, shouting at people they know, trying to be as loud as possible. Whoever said that "artists" and "theater people" should be obnoxiously loud should be put inside a blender and pulsed to death.

I also hated the fact that I had to endure meeting some of my former friends who are still working in the film industry. These are people who I saw change their personalities just to become more acceptable to the "in" crowd. A good friend, who eventually turned her back on the local film industry once said, "Sa pelikula, kakainin ang pagkatao mo." Truer words were never spoken.

However, it was a pleasant surprise to see an old friend, film maker Sari Dalena, back in the Philippines. I hope that girl starts making narrative films soon. She's a great talent.

Rant over... Hurray for Maximo Oliveros!!! ;D

Caught a glimpse of the preem last night--seen the film already during it's Cinemalaya run--and the theater was filled to the brim! Also, the transfer to film wasn't all that bad; it was pretty clear actually. Had I stayed longer, prolly would've joined (read: gate crashed) the victory party at Italianis! Hehe.

Congrats to Raymond Lee and everyone behind Maxi.

Italianni's? Eh...not a place I'd choose for the food. But, yes, they are a convenient place for group meetings and parties.

Otherwise...congrats to Aureaus!

Have you seen it, Noel?

By the way, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros can add another laurel in its long list. It just won Best Film in the recently concluded Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore. Again, congratulations to the filmmakers.

No, hopefully soon.

I have seen Aureaus' previous films. Not always successful, but I do remember his first, Suring at ang Kuk-ok. Wonderful stop-motion animation, in the service of a completely detailed (and intriguingly incomplete) glimpse of a complex fantasy world.

More raves for this film:

Funny, cute, tender coming-of-age film that deals with homosexuality and love for family. Other than the character of Roderick Paulate in Maryo J. delos Reyes' HIGH SCHOOL CIRCA '65, gay depictions on the big screen was just mere decoration, but this film was different.

The direction is straight forward even the narrative doesn't resort to usual cliches in most mediocre Filipino films. The scene at the basement where they watched those foreign pirated dvds with subtitles brings down the whole U.P. Film center when we watched it. Congrats to the whole cast!

Go, go Maximo!  ;D

I've been doing an a visual inspection of Maximo's box-office returns here in SM Mega, by way of looking at the number of tickets inside the transparent box, and I can fairly say that nilalampaso niya ang Hari ng Sablay! Pati ibang Hollywood flicks, talo niya, lalo na ngayong weekend!

Wait till KING KONG arrives next week. But if MAXIMO extends until next week, that's a good sign regarding the state of Philippine Cinema.

It's funny; when Nick Deocampo saw Happy Together, he found the gay scenes unconvincing; on the other hand David Ehrenstein thinks it's the best film Wong has ever done, and utterly gay in sensibility (he knows Wong is straight). So even gay viewers aren't infallible, or at least consistent.

Alam kong hindi bakla yung artista pero di pa rin siya mukhang bakla sa pelikula. Mas gusto ko pa umarte yung contestant na may nanay na patay at malamig na pansit.

The best characterization of a gay character was Mark Gil's portrayal as the best friend of Dina Bonnevie in Lino Brocka's PALIPAT-LIPAT PAPALIT-PALIT.
