Why Do You Collect DVDs?
« on: Dec 16, 2001 at 04:14 PM »
(Modified thread title to be more specific -- modgonz)

don't know if this has been discussed before.  everyone has their own reasons for collecting DVDs... what's yours?  as for me, if it was a huge hit in the states whether badly reveiwed or not and if i am an admirer of the lead cast... this time whether the movie was a success or not.  though if the movie is really bad, then i won'y buy it.
 ;D :D ;) :)

I buy DVD's coz I want to see em.
Coz lots of the good stuff, especially the indie/art films and the old films never even get to the pinas
so sometimes you have to buy em.

by the way, welcome to pinoydvd, DVD_Freak!  :D

I collect DVDs because I love movies.  And the DVD format is a much (much!) better way to ensure that your movie collection would last a long time (unlike my VHS movies which I'm sure na inamag na!)...

I am also a huge supporter of presenting films in their original aspect ratio, and DVD is the way to go (as LaserDisc was before it) when you don't want to see your movies hacked and scanned...

And as joeypogi said, a lot of good indie/old movies never reach our shores either theatrically or on VHS/VCD format...  When I bought Citizen Kane earlier this year, this was the first time I saw the movie and I enjoyed it immensely...  I was glad that the DVD format was available for me to be finally able to see that movie (with a clear picture and decent sound, to boot!)...
The war is over...  Now bring on the classics on HD!

I don't really consider myself a collector, but I only get those movies that I want to watch over and over again.

So that I can watch it again and again and again...

And I also think DVD, with its superior sound and video is more durable than VHS or LDs (sic) which makes it a good investment too. ;)

First, because I love watching movies :)

Second,It started as an accident.I really did'nt plan to collect dvds. At first all i wanted to do was see the quality of the picture and sound so I've just rented dvds instead. But after a few more rentals I said to myself that I should at least have 1 owned DVD so I bought one because i need one around to show my friends the superior quality of picture and sound. And what do you know that 1 dvd started my small collection so far.

The dvds I mostly collect are the movies that are my favorite and the ones that I would never get tired of watching over and over ;D

I've been a lover of movies since time immemorial. Started with Betamax, then VHS where most of my collection is.  Never really delved into laserdiscs because of limited rentals and sales.  Then came VCDs which I was dissatisfied in terms of video quality especially those pixellations. Arrgghh! >:( Audio quality I guess was better than VHS though.  And it was more handy in a disc.  Was satisfied so far with these formats.  Then came...DVD.

What's a DVD without a home theater? So discovered PinoyDVD which really influenced me in the home theater thing (Gastos in other words).  Collected DVDs na rin.  Centering more on the blockbuster movies to optimize my investment in my HT.  With the DVDs, I try to limit my purchases to new titles which I didn't have yet on the other formats.  Bought some old titles (sometimes) like Terminator and T2 coz these are really worth it in the DVD format.  But then my limiting factor in collecting is still...MOOLAH! :-/  So I really think about buying a DVD title.  Love the special features but moreso the audio and video quality which is really superb.

With DVDs, you really get into the making, background and everything you want to know about a movie not just the movie itself.  So they are really worth collecting! 8)

I love watching movies, have a decent HT system and used to collect Laser Discs.

I was also impressed with this format on my LD HT set up adapted to DVD and that settled it. VCD's were also getting popular at that time, but I couldn't get myself to go for the less sharp picture although decent sound.

So, I chose DVD's and will stick to it until the replacement for DVD's (whatever that may be) settles in.

Watching movies over and over again is something I enjoy as well and would like the freedom to do so at my whim. Tried renting for a while too, but could never really get a movie I wanted at the time I wanted to view it.

I dont like watching but I dont know why I collect DVDs. Im not saying I hate them, Im tamad to watch but I enjoy whenever I get to watch. I think its more on the hardware. I love tinkering with electronics and listening to good music that's why I collect good sounding movies only.

plus dvd's then was so cheap back in '98...

those were the good old glory days ::)

plus w/ me joining the ranks of fatherhood, i needed an escape from the real world... ;)

I started collecting DVDs 2 years ago. I bought a DVD player without having watched a single movie on DVD.  A friend recommended that the DVD is the way to go if I like watching movies. I am glad that I heeded his advise and bought myself a dvd player.
I don't usually watch a movie more than once. A single viewing is enough for me. But with DVDs, each time I watch a movie on DVD is like watching it for the very first time. I now collect DVDs but only limit my purchases to 2 titles a month.  :D

Just thought about this... if you have only a limited number of DVDs, yung tendency is to watch them over and over again.  Everytime I watch a movie for the 2nd or more times, I always discover something new...maybe sa background...sound effects...missed dialogues to make the story clearer...those things!

But if you are a consumer of DVDs i.e. buy and buy and buy and buy without even opening or watching the others you've bought, you won't have the time to preview again the ones you've bought before, taking out the thrill of discovering something new.

Just my experience... ;D

I used to collect betas then VHS some LDs and some VCDs so the natural progression was to go into DVDs. What I usually look for in the DVDs I buy are the features. For me it increases the value of the DVD and makes it more "sulit". If they were a little cheaper I'd probably buy every movie I like. But given the prices, I try to limit my purchases as much as I could (operative word being: try :) ).

Speaking of which, Hi bently! I read your earlier post. I only started collecting in mid 2000 so I'm curious how much DVDs were back in '98 when you say they were so cheap.

back in '98 there was only about 600 titles available pero by the end of '98 there was about 3'000 titles already available in the market...
there was a boom of dvd etailers wanting to make there mark...dvd's where normally sold at 40 to 50% off but with numerous coupons being offered at that time ,prices went down as much as 80 to 90% off the msrp. :D

Another reason why I collect DVDs is the packaging.  They release nice and unique packaging for some titles like T2 UE (silver), Terminator SE (hologram), Total Recall (round Mars shaped metal container, Basic Instinct...etc.

It is less bulky than VHS to fit your rack.  And isn't it nice to see them side by side with their titles and with the different colors?  ;D

I think DVD's are the best format for viewing movies at home.  I don't collect dvd's just for the sake of amassing large quantities of discs.  I feel that there are many pitiful and useless releases (specially here in the Philippines) that buying them would simply be a waste of my time and money.  I appreciate great movies and I only buy titles that I wouldn't mind seeing over and over again.

If you started earlier than what Bently said. You'll find out that only 50 titles are available. And Japanese DVD player was not available yet.

I turned collector of disc format when I finally owned a CD player. And I had to go to Dau every week to satisfy my addiction. ;D Bihira pa kasi ang CD na nabibili sa Manila that time. Now, the disc has turned into video [DVD], for me, it is just an upgrade from where I started. :)
There's something to learn everyday
