surround speakers installation
« on: Dec 04, 2005 at 11:01 AM »
due to space contraints i only have two options on where to put my wall-hanged bookshelf surround speakers for a 5.1 setup.

where is the best place to hang my bookshelf speakers? at the back or at the sides. my main problem if im going to place it at the side of my listening position is the surround right speaker will be placed much farther than the surround left as seen on pic #2. can i adjust something on my AVR for this scenario? or im better off placing my surrounds at the back.

what setup is better for movies?

setup 1

setup 2

thanks for the advices  ;D

you can adjust the distance of the surround right speaker from listening position on the AVR settings.  i haven't tried placing surrounds at the back wall so i can't give any feedbacks.

suggestions you may want to try:

**try ceiling mounting.

**this is a creative one,  place 2 stands on both ends at the back of your sofa (anything will do as long as it is stable and cheap) and not so high that the speakers protrude or is above your sofa.  place your surrounds with the woofers pointing up and  put in a good dvd with good surround scenes (pod race) and see how it goes.

your room setup is similar to mine.  I mounted my surround ( 9 dfs )  near  the ceiling ( 8.5ft) . check out the pics of my HT in the HT gallery section.

Get a swivel bracket so you can mount it at the back but can face it sideways.

Thanks guys for the very informative responses  ;D

I think I can put the surrounds at the back of my listening position facing forward and try how it sounds.

But getting a swivel bracket would be another option so the speakers can face sideways. Do you guys have any idea where I can get it cheap?

Thanks again  ;D

It was my impression that to maximize your enjoyment you have to actually place all your speakers equidistant with each other. Later when i re-oriented my HT area, where equidistant placement of speakers in relation to my TV  is not at all possible, i just tried to position the speakers in the corner just like SETUP 2 and try to adjust the individual loudness. The result - the fly around effects is even better.  ;D

Setup 1, I had a similar dilemma when I was doing my room. I ended up  with the option 1

Is it possible to have a great sounding setup even if the speakers are not  equidistant, but adjusted the speaker distance on my AVR???...

Try having it equidistant as much as possible. It would yield the best results  :)

Thanks very much sir Matz!

actually i haven't fix-mounted my surrounds yet (9 DFS) because im still experimenting where it sounds best. temporarily i placed it on Flash stands (used for photograpy) in that way i can move 'em around.  In DFS i think it sounds best for me if placed behind the viewer, because it sounds like an extension of the fronts if i place them on the sides. the room area is irregular so its quite hard to decide where to place the speakers...
