Top 5 Speakers worth auditioning
« on: Dec 13, 2005 at 05:37 PM »
As the title of the thread suggests, list the top 5 speakers
(based on your personal experience) that is worthy of audition.

Also, please tell us why we should audition those speakers (strengths)
and also tell us what are the speaker's weaknesses (again, based
on your own personal experience).  Subjective or objective comments welcome.
This thread will hopefully help those planning to explore other speaker brands,
those planning to upgrade their speakers, or those still starting out in the hobby.

I repeat, please don't list speakers you haven't personally auditioned or have
no personal experience whatsoever
.  Also please don't list very expensive
speakers meant for multimillionnaires only (like B&W Nautilus, Revel Salon,
JM Labs Utopia, etc.).

To start this thread, let me share with you my own 'Top 5 list'
1. B&W DM600 s3 - priced at 16k, this bookshelf speaker has the warm,
forward sound of its larger floorstander siblings.
Strengths - very natural sound, very good midrange and highs, capable
of delivering large amounts of ambience for its price.
Weaknesses - Can sound boxy/muffled/claustrophobic to those used with
'brighter' and 'more open' speakers.
2. Dynaudio audience speakers - very pleasing sound with sweet highs;
good, clean bass. A little bit less forward sounding than the B&W 600 s3's
but more forgiving on CD's with shrill highs.
3. Bose bookshelf speakers - try it to settle once and for all if everything
you've heard and read about Bose is true.  :)
#4 & #5 are all B&W's speakers so I guess I'd skip them both...  ;D

Cheers!

Kevlar,

Para maging effective yung thread na ito, mas mabuti siguro kung ilista ng poster yung ibang speakers na napakinggan nya na, hindi lang yung top 5.  Kasi, readers will end up wondering kung anong speakers kinumpara yung mga rated.  Let's say sa list mo, hindi ko alam kung mas gusto mo ang B&W sa Monitor Audio, Acoustic Energy, Infinity, Wharfedale, etc. kasi hindi naman alam ng reader kung narinig mo na itong mga ibang speakers.

Suggestion lang po :)

for me, in my quest for a pair of speakers, i auditioned the following:

1. Dali Concept 6
2. Dali Ikon 6
3. Triangle Antal 202
4. Sonus Faber Concertino
5. Totem Rainmaker

at the end of it all, it is still system synergy that counts...it just so happened that with my present gears and present room condition, the Dali Concept 6 is the excellent match...i still look forward to auditioning the Ikon 2 and Ikon 5...just my 2-cents, thanks! :)

Bro ricky,

Sorry I forgot to mention the application.
I'm talking about 'audio' only.
I'm not much into HT/movies.  My tv is usually
just furniture in my home. :D
It sits around all day long gathering dust...
until my wife turns it on to watch some soap opera... ;D

O, clarification to all, I'm talking about Top 5 speakers
worth auditioning for 'audio' systems.

3. Opera Audio Eric-1 (review here- http://www.wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3460)
4. Triangle Comete 202 (review here- http://www.wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3460)
5. Dali Concept 2
6. Aurum Cantus SE
7. Paradigm Studio Series
8. Klipsch RB-3 (review here- http://www.wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=310)
9. Spendor S3/5 (review here- http://www.wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1366)
10. Tannoy Stirling
11. Fostex BS60 DIY (review here- http://www.wiredstate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1077)
12. Axiom M3ti

These speakers were auditioned in my room, using my gear.

My top choices

1. Coincident Triumph

bro s2kov, the guy who got the Kappa is using Conrad Johnson, unless he upgraded? Or you might be referring to the guy who got my JBL LX2002 who has a Primare ;)

I did not list the JBL LX2002 because I only used it for HT application, and the topic is for 'audio' only ;)

Is the Coincident series available locally?  Who's the distributor, where and how much, if you don't mind.  This has been on my wish list for the past 2 years.  Thanks.

Just sharing my series of upgrade with my No.1 as what I currently have. (25 yrs. in the making)

1. Epos M12.2 ( 2 way , no electronic crossover on the mid/bass) very pleasing, well balanced, matched with tubes (cayin MT35, CDT15A), audiophile material.
2. B&W 602S3, pleasing too with slight boomness (NAD C542, Cayin MT35), bulky for stand mount.
3. AE Evo 3, (3 way) slightly harsh on high , can really go down on lows(NAD C542,Cayin MT35,  Hafler xL280, BOM Tube Pre-amp).
4. B&W CDM1 (2 way), hard to drive, little nasal, strong built
5.Bose AM7 - good for bass bomb material, disco and rock (audio). Mainstayer for my HT set-up, unobtrusive
6. JBL L20T - a rocker, easily clips at low frequency
7. Daichi assembled speaker. What can I say... can't afford that time.

Some other speakers I auditioned.  Klipsch RF15-25, RB3-35, Monitor Audio S6, MA B4, B&W 601.5,603, 604 S3, Infinity, Wharfdales, Mordaunt Short,Gale.
Thay are all good but doesn't fit my taste and of course budget.

just me.

Most speakers mentioned here to be worthy of auditioning are all well known and in fact just mentioning the name, any audio or video enthusiast here in the forum can actually describe with ease using the usual audio jargon the beautiful innate characteristics of that given brand. Somehow most of these wallet piercing speakers do live with their standards so that if there are variations to the description, these are all insignificant and very minute.

For me, worth auditioning are those unknown brands or those made by unknown makers because of the possibility of discovering gems in them.  :)

1-2) Von Schweikert VR-1/VR-2
3) Any LS3/5a
4-5) Dali Ikon's and the Suite line

You're just auditioning them anyway but yes, they're worth the experience. The selection above can cover amps from 8wpc to 200wpc whether SS or Valve amplification and HT or Audio (except the LS3/5a  :P). I have tried them all plus a couple more and most of those above would have suited my system and my listening space.

Kevlar,

Para maging effective yung thread na ito, mas mabuti siguro kung ilista ng poster yung ibang speakers na napakinggan nya na, hindi lang yung top 5.  Kasi, readers will end up wondering kung anong speakers kinumpara yung mga rated.  Let's say sa list mo, hindi ko alam kung mas gusto mo ang B&W sa Monitor Audio, Acoustic Energy, Infinity, Wharfedale, etc. kasi hindi naman alam ng reader kung narinig mo na itong mga ibang speakers.

Suggestion lang po :)

Good suggestion, EB. I did also audition a Wharfedale floorstander (8.3) but forgot to list it in my
top 5 where it clearly is worth auditioning (very close to B&W's in sound at much lower price).

I actually also auditioned B&W Nautilus 801 and all the 800 series package, the Revel Salon,
Dynaudio audience 52 and 82, JBL's, Infinity.  I usually audition different models from the same brands
so I can select which best fits my application and budget. I've also auditioned the cheaper
ones like those speakers from the big electronics giants: Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, Kenwood,
JVC, Aiwa.  As for the popular Monitor audio and Acoustic energy, I haven't auditioned those
brands here in Cebu.

I still audition the 600k+/pair Revel Salon and the B&W Nautilus 801 from time to time.
I schedule the audition during non-peak hours and when my favorite friendly salesmen are around.
(The two speakers are from different shops.) I do this in order to 'calibrate' my ears.  :D

In audio kasi, the more you listen to only one kind of speakers, the more you tend to think
its the best speaker out there.  Your ears adjust pretty well to your sound system
so much so that the longer you listen to your system, the better it gets because you become
accustomed to its shortcomings like a little harshness/brightness in the treble, a little less open sound,
a little muddy/nasal midrange, or a little boom or lack of bass, etc.

Dapat i-calibrate mo yung ears mo, sort of 'traceable' to some very good or excellent system...
Para bagang ISO 9000 - traceble to international standards  (though there are no 'international'
standards to speak of in audio)...  ;D

Also, it would help to really try to 'season' your ears by listening to live performances.
It doesn't have to be a concert...  A live band in a restobar will do; a live band performing
for your Christmas party, birthday party, or bachelor's party (just kidding! ;D) will do.
You can always go to malls and listen to a live band performing if they have one scheduled
for that day.  Now who says there's no such thing as 'free lunch'?  ;)

Any 'event' or 'happening' for that matter where you get a close encounter of what
'live music' sounds like will do.  Try to listen carefully to the voices of the singers and the sound
of the live musical instruments.  Listen critically but don't forget to enjoy the party or the
show!  ;)

It also helps if like me (a typical Cebuano), you play the guitar and also get to listen
to your brother-in-law playing his piano everyday in his home.  I actually play my guitar
from time to time (especially during 'brownouts') and listen to my brother-in-law
play his piano and rehearse his singing just so I 'calibrate' my ears to the sound
of live 'unamplified' music.

It also helps that my youngest brother has an amateur band and they rehearse in my parent's
home (rooftop) where he is lead vocalist and drummer.  After he got married though,
his band 'evaporated' so I don't get to hear the sound of a live drum kit as often as I like.
Good thing my neighbor also does their band practice once to twice a month at their place
but then again, they haven't been doing it lately, so the need to attend live performances elsewhere.

Sometimes when I set up my system, I ask my wife to stand in front
of my main speakers and play the guitar in front of me just so I can listen
and compare the live acoustic guitar sound with that of my acoustic recordings...  ;D
Sometimes, I ask her to sing...  and she says, 'Naunsa ka?!!! Nabuang na ba ka?!!!'
(translation: 'Ano?!!! Naloloko ka na ba?!!!).  ;D

Oops!  I think I'm way out of topic already...  ;D

Back to the topic...
Top 5 speakers worth auditioning (for audio) is not the same
as the 'Best 5 speaker brands'. No. It's not that. It is recalling
all speakers you've ever auditioned and choosing from them, your top 5
based on your own budget constraints. Nobody should dispute/challenge
anybody's list here because it is his list, clear?

This thread should be retitled: 'Top 5 speakers (audio-only) in your personal (audition-to-buy) list'
Mr. moderator, can we change the thread's title to this one so it will be less prone
to misinterepretation? Thanks.

Any Vandersteen speaker.

I'm not saying that they are the best.  But they are very worthwhile to audition so that you will know how speaker design/technology affects the sound in terms of strengths, weaknesses, and compromises.

Once you listen to them, you will appreaciate the audible importance of the engineering that goes into them and other speakers that share the same design principles (though there are very few).

I.E.:
1.  physically time aligned driver arrangement = coherent sound across the frequency range
2.  First order crossovers = good bass-mid-treble transition and blending.
3.  minimum front baffle surface area = un-boxy sound and huge soundstage
4.  critically damped bass (Qtc<=.5) = superb bass control and lack of peaks

The basic design principles of Vandersteen speakers havn't changed in over dacades; a testament of good design that endures.  I liken them as being the Porsche 911 of speakers  ;D

weaknesses:
1.  relatively low sensitivity
2.  use of first order crossovers limits power handling
3.  they are physically large
4.  hard to find a subwoofer that is damped/controlled enough to blend well with these.
