I agree that sometimes the dialogues get pretty hard to understand (as if the actors are mumbling) so i watch with the subs ON.  :)

depends...
pag kailangan mahina yung volume like natutulog na si baby e kailangan ON...
pag kasama si kuya who is a deaf/mute e syempre ON.
pag ako lang e OFF..

I usually watch with the subtitles on since I can't clearly hear the dialog. Will a center speaker help? I'm not really into loud noises & the surround sound experience. I just want crisp dialog. What's the best way to achieve this?

getting a center speaker (plus surrounds and 5.1++ capable hardware) will certainly do the trick. 5.1 (DTS and DD) encoded audio specifically channels main dialogue into center speakers. if you only have surrounds, you only get a phantom center, that is, your surrounds mimic the effect of having a center, which is usually undesirable.

ON on my first viewing. Especially if it's a favorite movie of mine. Then when I'm satisfied that I understood absolutely everything what my favorite character(s) said, I switch it off the next time I watch it. I usually turn it ON pala pag British ang mga actors.

On.  Para di kailangang malakas ang audio.   :D

In addition, I also appreciate dvds which offer subtitles for their commentary track.  The volume of some commentary tracks are so soft that I'd have to turn up the volume just to hear the director/cast/crew talk.   :D

In the case of Kung Fu Hustle, you really need the subtitle for the commentary since the track is in Mandarin.

It depends on the movie like Lord of the Rings wherein there are so many "foreign" (elves and dwarves) languages which is hard to understand.  But for comedies like 50 first dates, i turn the subtitle off.

If I'm watching a movie wherein most actors are British, I always turn it ON on the first 3 viewings... I find it hard to get use to the thick accent sometimes...

off as much as possible as I find them distracting. only switch them on if I don't understand something or accent is thick.

There are some lines w/ch actors mumble the words, mostly in gangster flicks, then i turn subtitles just to know what they said.
For black flicks naman, I was raised on Chicago so talking slang and listening to it ain't a damn thing but a walk in the park. You best be feelin that!

If it's action movie, it's OFF. If drama or any movie with lot's of dialogue or court proceedings I normally turn it ON para madaling maintindihan.
