forgive my ignorance but what does "push pull" mean?

I currently have wharfedale 9.5 ...what are the price ranges of SET's and AMX's?

Circuit design ng amp i let the tech guru to ask futher.. pero for 9.5 Push pull would be a must.

Hi,

I'll try to keep the technical mambo-jambo as far away as I can.

Music (or audio frequency) is made up of modulated sine waves. A whole sine wave is made up of a positive cycle and a negative cycle, where the two crosses or meets is known as zero crossing.

With this in mind, a push-pull configuration uses two output tubes wherein 1 of the output tubes amplifies the positive cycle and the other 1 amplifies the negative cycle. This action then denotes a push-pull action because when one of the tubes "push", the other one will "pull" when the first one approaches zero crossing. Push-pull amps vary a lot due to the different types of biasing and their operating Class but generally have higher power capabilities.

On a SET (Single Ended Triode) configuration, there is no push-pull action since there is only one power tube and this tube amplifies both the positive and negative cycles of the sine wave. This type of amplifiers almost always operate on a Class A biasing and power output ranges from 1W to 15W only. So these type of amps would require a fairly high sensitivity speaker to fully realize it's prowess.

thanks for the answer sir jojo.....medyo may naiintindihan ko na !!!!your right at the end of the day we just wants to listen and relax ....but its that same passion that drives me to also learn these things.....i do understand that ears are always the best tools but having technical know-how would help rite?!?having said the thing about ears.....mga kapwa members!!!!ingatan natin ang ears natin!!as one of my friends from pinoydvd once told me "kahit saang audio shop wala nyan"

That's great, now your arming yourself with knowledge. Keep it up and you'll be on top of things in a short while.

I have also have several observations (i accumulated over a year) pero I'm very careful not to offend the feelings ,kasi
parang religion ang dating ng hobby na ito sa iba?
But I think in pinoydvd forum , lalo na mga nagtatanong importante ang ma well-equipt sa info kami.! yun ang importante

if you want to know more, you can google, audio lies and myths.

in this hobby, there is such a thing as "high end" audio, and you are not "in" if you are not into it. but to me high end need not be at such ridiculously high costs.

you will see those afflicted with this sars, buying gears then later selling them for even more expensive ones, this type of obsession once it bits you will be very hard to get rid of later on.

that is why DIY is the way to go, even if you spent a lot of money, you know where the money went.

if i may, some i PERSONALLY consider as such...

1. x tube will always sound better than y tube. (can't be treated in isolation from the circuit that uses them)
2. negative feedback is absolutely bad therefore not to be desired
3. triode is better than pentode or vice versa
4. SE better than PP or vice versa
5. NOS tubes can beat new production anytime
6. inexpensive gear inferior to "hi-ends" in terms of sonic qualities (same with choice of exotic vs standard parts)
7. XYZ circuit (say DC) will always beat ABC circuit (say RC).

now, maybe these are my own biases

. honest truth is, i sometimes distrust my own senses (often easily clouded by biases) and will only do so trust my ears esp during my own blind tests.

btw, there are some many writeups that support and contradict my list above. after saying this, am sure you will not be as enlightened as before reading my post.

What kind of tubes? Driver, Rectifier...etch? I assume Tube amplifier, Push-Pull or SET? ULtra-linear or Parallel SET? Integrated or Power amp? or possibly monoblock? just kidding. Maybe it's better to join some listening sessions rather than borrowing them, unless you are decided to buy one (some stores can let you home audition them).

Now back to the topic "Whats the biggest reason why you love tubes". For me they produce better sine waves output.

Why do we like tubes? One thing I observed is yun MIDRANGE buo. Kahit anong type of tubes !
Pag nakininig ka ulit ng solid state, yun agad mapapansin na iba ang quality ng midrange pag tube amps.
Well I Visited the website suggested by 2ny, I agree with the observations. With regards to value of
tube amps sometimes talagang overpriced to make a impression that it is the best but if you open it and
compute the parts inside it is really way way overpriced. DIY NGA TAMA
NOS aren"t neccessarily superior to current produced tubes .
Mahal sila becoz the law of supply and demands applies.
