Commercials on DVDs - new trend?
« on: Feb 13, 2002 at 10:54 AM »
No, I'm not talking about Disney's endless string of trailers at the start of their discs.  :)

I was a bit surprised when I placed my R2 DVD of Cold Feet: The Complete Third Series into my machine. After the standard Copyright Warnings and Studio Logo, I actually got a commercial for United Airlines. No, you can't scan through it or skip to the menu to bypass it, either. You MUST sit through every time you put this disc into your machine.

The 15 second spot didn't actually annoy me, but I was thinking... would I have felt differently if it were a string of commercials almost 5 minutes long? If it were, say, a Chow King commercial at the start of an R3 disc? I thought one of the purposes of getting something on video was to avoid commercials that come with the program on broadcast TV.

Well, if it keeps the prices down, then I guess I can live with it.

a new pet peeve for dvd's >:(

i really hate disney for doing this forced commercials so as to hypnotize our children in buying their stuff, or brainwashing them to go to disneyland. :-[

i also hate the forced public announcement in the fast and the furious dvd disc w/c i find very ironic since it asks the viewers not to take drag racing too seriously! and that all the drivers in this movie are experienced stunt drivers and we shouldn't try these stunts at home. ::)

Is it possible to stop the disc then press on the Menu afterward to avoid those ads. I did it to some of my DVDs and it worked. I wonder if it will work on my Mummy Returns. ???

I hope this doesn't become a trend.  Trailers I can take, but commercials?  I feel kasi that it takes the glamor out of watching DVDs.  :-[

Just my opinion though.

TV commercials on DVD's suck

but if they come out with a collection of the greatest or the coolest TV commercials, MTV's, video clips, etc. on DVD, that would rock! ;D

Most Hollywood movies, including those from Disney, are designed to "brainwash" viewers. Why do you think most of the discussions in this site deal with American movies on DVD?

So far only trailers are being shown in DVDs before the movie or the menu comes with a few exception like the United Airlines commercial.Eventually I think this will catch on with other advertisers especially because they know most of the people change channels if a commercial goes on but in DVD, viewers just opt to go thru the advertisement and not bother to skip thru them. Then again if it lasts as long as 5 mins.YUCK!! Trailers are good way of advertisement for the up-coming movies and I do watch them but as for products, I don't even remember the last time I did not change channels when one came up.

I recently viewed, MediaAsia's INFERNAL AFFAIRS.

At Disc1 before going to the main DVD menu, you will be presented by a non-forwardable/stopable commercial of a Sony MP3 Player

Now at Disc2, before viewing the film's main trailer a short advertisment graphics of Motorolla emblem is shown.

More recently, local Star Cinema/Viva releases have an endless string of trailers and/or commercials you cannot fast forward through when you place the DVDs into your player. They sometimes run over 5 minutes!

I can maybe understand the commercials, if they're helping keep the price of the DVDs down. But I can't see why I must be forced to watch a whole string of lousy trailers before I watch a lousy film.  >:(

The R1 DVD of Heroes: Season One has a commercial for the Nissan Versa that plays when you insert the disc. Yes, the car rented/driven by Ando Masahashi and Hiro Nakamura on the show since it was in the comic drawn by Mr. Isaac.  ;D

It really made me laugh hard when I saw it.

well, i dont actually notice the commercials/trailers

i had a habit of turning on the dvd, then leaving it running for a while to get something - so when i get back, the main menu of the movie will be showing already  :P so i really dont notice the commercials or trailers if ever :)

but i know how irritating it is to be forced to watch the commercials - then again , maybe the commercials subsidize the cost of producing the dvd?  ???

as to the commercial of Nissan versa on Heroes DVD - great marketing strategy by Nissan  :D

I don't really mind if there are commercials / trailers whenver I insert a dvd as long as I can skip or at least fast forward. The casino royale single disc dvd has around 5 commercials/trailers in it.

And for completion of discussion on this thread, the single-disc Spider-Man 3 R3 Philippine release has Chuppa Chups (2x), Bacchus, Jimm's 5-in-1 Coffee, Enchanted Kingdom, and Sony commercials you cannot bypass when playing the disc daw.
