The 2-yr old 80gb hdd I installed on an external hdd case just died.  It can no longer be detected by my windows even using its disk management facility, so I can't even reformat if I have to.  I wonder if the frequent handling and movement at home did it in.  And I haven't even begun to shuttle it between office and home for the files i needed, which I intended to do.  Any idea how to recover its data?

Yup,  I already did.  I also swapped from my IDE to external and there's no problem with the external case.

Looks like it.  The lost data are just video files ripped from DVDs.  I can always redo them, but these things do eat a lot of my time.

i've had the same problem a couple of drives ago... suddenly the mobo's bios would ot detect the drive at all. like it wasn't there. admittedly, the drive is OLD... (6GB ... maxtor) but it happened so sudden and without warning.

my suspicion with a problem like this is that the defect in the IC board. rendering the drive useless even if the "discs" inside are still healthy and error-free. sayang nga eh.

biglang mawawala sa Windows Explorer yung drive kapag nagbrowse ka sa loob nya or nag-copy
ka nang files.  so ni-retire ko na.

after a while when i got a new PSU, and i was cleaning my room to throw out dead hardware,
i tested those "disappearing" drives one last time.  i hooked them up (IDE at SCSI yun eh) to the new PSU
and they were working again.   my guess is that baka PSU problem lang pala sa previous computer ko kaya ganoon kasi ok sya sa bagong PSU ko eh.

Pag nawawala yung HDD sa windows, kadalasan nyan di lang tama pagkaka attach ng IDE cable or sira yung IDE cable.  Baka yung molex connector din ng power may sira.  In your case, baka yung molex connector ng PSU ang may prob.

Those cables were my first suspect.  I had it replaced.  Same thing.  I had it swapped with those connecting hard drives that were working.  Same thing.    So it must be the drive.

I share your suspicion.  The drive was never dropped.  Never developed bad sectors.  So it must be the electroncs.  I wish there were shops that can changed the IC board for Seagate.  According to PC Corner at Glorietta, no local shop does that.  If the electronics are dead, the entire thing is dead.

Disposable kasi mga pc parts eh.  Pero sa US may mga data recovery services.  Dito wala

True, the electronics are disposable and cheap.  And they're often the first to go in cases like this. The hard drive mechanism is the more expensive part and maybe more long lasting.  Sayang talaga when the electronics go and the drive mech is still ok.
