After the recent disappointment in R3 titles brought about by the substandard packaging of Magnavision's
King Kong Limited Edition release, I decided to check out the competition: Viva/Fox's
The Sound of Music: 40th Anniversary Edition, released at about the same time in the same price range (this title retails for Php 900).
The two titles are worlds apart for the five peso price difference.
The Sound of Music comes with a sturdy (though non-glossy) slipcase, a high-quality swing-type clear DVD case, 6 miniature lobby cards, an insert with chapter stops, and a full-color 8-page Songbook with pictures:
For
Disc One, the picture quality is excellent, and I'm enjoying the DD 5.1 track. It comes with the old Director's Commentary Track and the new cast/Von Trapp commentary track, as well.
Also, I'm busting my gut from the Tagalog subtitles:
"This is your new governess, Fraulein Maria" =
Siya ang inyong bagong yaya, Binibining Maria"As I sound your signals you will step forward and give your name" =
Ibigay ang inyong mga pangalan sa inyong hudyat!"I'm Kurt, and I'm incorrigible!" =
Ako si Kurt, at ako'y makulit!"During dessert, always blow your nose!" =
Pag kumakain ng panghimagas, sisinga ka palagi. Disc Two contains all the special features listed for the R1 version. The Mia Farrow screen test was for the role of Liesl, and she sings in it. It's a little disappointing that the Christopher Plummer/Julie Andrews reunion is a separate feature from the children's reunion, so they never assemble the entire cast together at one time.
All things considered, I think this is probably the best Philippine R3 2-Disc Special Edition release in a long time, especially during these times when cheap generic cases and poor quality cover printing are becoming the norm.
